To not get these Pearl Parties

I see these 'pearl parties' on Facebook live all the time... I don't get it but people seem to be going nuts for them?
How does it work? Do any of you do them?

justdont She must have a magic vagina. Lucky cow.

justdontevenfuckingstart · 17/02/2017 00:55

Bahh I am sure she's lovely but I hate her. Seriously. Both!

PrincessFiorimonde · 17/02/2017 01:04

This thread is a hoot.

WhyPost · 17/02/2017 01:15

You can order the oysters with a pearl in them plus the jewellery from Amazon for £12.99

So the pearls are from Aquaman?

PopGoesTheOysteryBullshit · 17/02/2017 01:38

Am I the only one sniggering at "aquaman"?

GoesDownLikeACupOfColdSick · 17/02/2017 07:12

Ok. Set up an MLM selling magical vaginas like that, bahh, and I'll be your first sparkly business oyster vagina!

ParadiseCity · 17/02/2017 07:24

For anyone bored of this pearl opening thing, lets take it to the next level hun! I've got an Oyster CARD, & whenever I swipe it I get a surprise valuation. I could film myself getting on the tube. I'm sure it would be fascinating. If you all pay me I'll also include the Thought of the Day whiteboard.

Gosh, well, this escalated.

I've been musing on MLMs overnight. I am actually thinking of doing some sort of academic study on the economics and sociology behind it. To place a Marxist spin on it (because hey, why the fuck not?), I've concluded that MLMs have risen due to the breakdown in traditional communities and the erosion of sources of work for women, along with the societal expectations placed upon them. The dilemma many women face between working outside of the home and caring for their children results in a fertile market for MLM pedlars. However, what happens is actually a further erosion of social ties, as the pressure of making sales and meeting targets forces bots to mither their friends and family and act unethically (see the Great Younique Saga that played out on here a while ago).

This all has intersected with the rise of post-truth, and the conflation of opinion with facts, along with social media becoming an unregulated outlet and channel of dissemination.

There's a cult element operating as well, particularly in the language used and the semiotic markers of group identity (the naming of any sort of criticism as "hate", for example).

I read the headline as PEARL PANTIES and I remembered Samantha getting a pair from Richard

TaliDiNozzo · 17/02/2017 07:47

Any company that sucks in people who really have no business being sucked into anything needs to give their corporate heads a wobble. My oyster bot is vulnerable due to a relationship with a financially and emotionally abusive man and I wouldn't be surprised if she was targeted because of that. One of the truly sad things is that prior to the birth of her baby she had a good job in the NHS. The story almost writes itself.

TinfoilHattie · 17/02/2017 08:34

There's a Facebook page called PearlPartyEducation.

Quite interesting.

JoanofNark17 · 17/02/2017 09:37

I think I should probably apologise to the bot on this thread, Danni whatever. Thinking about it she is probably just as much a victim of this scam as the people she is helping to con. I'm guessing she really does believe all that she says, even though from the outside its obviously illogical nonsense.

GerundTheBehemoth · 17/02/2017 09:45

Never heard of this til I read this thread today. But coincidentally I did take this photo of a turnstone eyeing up an oyster on the beach yesterday (don't think it's looking for pearls though...)

I agree. She's been suckered in hard.

whomovedmychocolate · 17/02/2017 10:13

I love a good Mumsnet barney. Thank you OP for this thread as I had wondered what the fuck my stupidest friends on Facebook were banging on about. I have one who is flogging Younique (and posting ultra photoshopped photos which look like she's been melted with the blur tool to show they work) and is now flogging this shit as well. God bless the 'unfollow' tool on Facebook as I have to actively go look to find it.

At least with Anne Summers parties you know you can get fucked over in a buzzy happy way. Biscuit

Willow2016 · 17/02/2017 10:47

I want to know how these people are suddenly experts on how to grade pearls. People work for years in the jewlery business before they are allowed to aprise pearls!

How can every single oyster have a pearl (and multicoloured at that!)? Telling someone that a pearl is worth £X when you have no experience in the field and when it probably really isnt is a scam is it not?

Just curious that I am missing something.

JoanofNark17 · 17/02/2017 10:51

Every oyster has a pearl as they have been placed in there to be "discovered".

Willow2016 · 17/02/2017 10:56

Joan
Yes sorry I should have been clearer why would people think that every single oyster would have a great pearl in it? Isnt this just too big a coincidence? Surely they dont believe that in real life every single oyster produces a valuable pearl in the industry, that there are no dudds?

JoanofNark17 · 17/02/2017 11:18

They are given a big spiel about how they are very special oysters and endless lies about how they are produced and where they come from. None of it is true, but they make it sound good.

"conflation of opinion with facts"

This is why the stories get a grip into people's brains and why they genuinely seem to believe that the stories are true and that just by believing they become more credible...

All rather Peter Pan and willing things into existence... I DO believe in fairies, I DO believe ....

needmoregin · 17/02/2017 14:13

I too read it as pearl panties 😜 I've seen this come up on Facebook the jewellery looks so cheap and tacky ...

MiscellaneousAssortment · 17/02/2017 14:22

I spent a very early morning transfixed by an opening video which went on for 40 minutes!

I was trying to work out how it works, as the oysters couldn't be real and they seemed to open so easily, unlike the edible ones. But then there are the insides, all too organic looking!

The explanation on this thread is rather sad and disgusting. I hope the people opening so many at once have some idea how to take care of their hands during/ after.
