To not get these Pearl Parties

Idratherbeaunicorn · 16/02/2017 13:12

I see these 'pearl parties' on Facebook live all the time... I don't get it but people seem to be going nuts for them?
How does it work? Do any of you do them?

Who the fuck watches an oyster being opened? People watch this shit? Omg!

NeedsAsockamnesty · 16/02/2017 14:00

I have a friend who does it, I think it's incredibly funny.

She actually tells people that the pearls are not placed in the shells ready for them to discover and people go crazy for them!

I'm sure I remember having something like it fir kids in a toy shop when I was little and we fell for it then but we were like 6

Lochan · 16/02/2017 14:03

Oysters don't "take on a challenge though". An irritant gets in (usually a parasite) and the oyster tries to protect itself by covering it in layer after layer of fluid. The oyster isn't thinking "it'll be pretty in the end".

JoanofNark17 · 16/02/2017 14:03

Who the fuck watches an oyster being opened?

I'm very happy to sit and watch at least a dozen oysters be opened.....as long as they then are placed in front of me on a platter of ice!

piefacerecords · 16/02/2017 14:03

Just found this:

The scam goes like this. The operator buys pickled oyster shells from either a wholesaler in the UK or America or direct from china. They are vacuum packed and dead. The poor things have had a random freshwater pearl shoved into them. The process is that the pearl is inserted into a live young akoya oyster shell and then the whole is dumped into a chemical bath which makes it snap closed, and kills and preserves it. Then it is vacuum packed or tinned and sold to one of the companies at the top of the supply pyramid

Makes me feel sad for the poor oysters Sad

dickiedavisthunderthighs · 16/02/2017 14:03

Presumably they open them in situ so that they can reuse the same "oyster" over and over again.
How do people fall for this guff?!

toffee1000 · 16/02/2017 14:04

Joan oh I totally get that (even though I'm not really an oyster fan).
Sometimes I think fb live is a terrible idea.

TaliDiNozzo · 16/02/2017 14:07

These are what she has posted (think I've cropped the identifying details!).

What's MLM?

I found "Joan's Story" hilarious. I feel sorry for the oysters. Instead of an irritating grain of sand, they probably insert a tiny microphone, repeating "Joan's" irritating mantra instead.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 16/02/2017 14:10

They get really stroppy with each other as well, always having arguements about other pearl party people and quite a lot of mud slinging goes on. They are always going on about fakes

sunflower2008 · 16/02/2017 14:11

OMG I wondered what they were all about too!!! Very weird! The videos just start playing as i scroll through my newsfeed - mosy annoying! lol. No idea why people get so excited over it!

OrchidaceousRose · 16/02/2017 14:12

What fresh hell is this? A "fresh" hell that stinks of rotten fish.

Fucking marvellous.

You couldn't make it up.

glueandstick · 16/02/2017 14:12

Oh god it should be illegal because of that bloody awful advert alone.

The type face. The layout. The everything. Argh.

IwasAM · 16/02/2017 14:15

That really is the site that is the gift that just keeps on giving, there literally isn't a single word of content on there that isn't fucking hilarious. Cheers OP Grin

Imhavingcheesefries · 16/02/2017 14:16

Oh I feel all squeamish at fingering an oyster

Idratherbeaunicorn · 16/02/2017 14:18

Cheesefries - I did not need the image of an oyster being fingered! Confused

ProfYaffle · 16/02/2017 14:19

Confused I seem to remember my dds having a bit of a craze over something similar a few years ago. There used to be necklaces you could buy and you had to open the shell (I think?) to get the pearl out and pop it into the necklace. The big 'reveal' was what colour they were as it was supposed to be significant (I forget how)

My dc are now the grand old ages of 12 and 9 and grew out of it some time ago. Are adult women really doing this??

RubbishMantra · 16/02/2017 14:20

@NeedsAsockamnesty, do you mean the clam shell thingies, put them in a glass of water, then watched in wonder as a "flower" sprouted from them, that looked like one of those sewn together flowering Jasmine tea balls?

TaliDiNozzo · 16/02/2017 19:35

I can't speak for everyone involved in one of these but the person I know who does it has definitely been sucked in for the same reasons as people get sucked into an MLM. She has a baby DS and a partner who is a bit of a shitbag (a lot of a shitbag actually, but I'm not sure she realises that yet) and I think she is probably finding her home life a bit tough. She's a classic target for something like this.

Tattsyrup · 16/02/2017 19:35

I know someone doing this, having given up on Younique. It's a bit of a novelty, I suppose. I actually won one of her necklaces and an "oyster opening", and I am quite fond of my necklace. I wouldn't have paid for it, as the quality is very poor, but for free? Yep.

DJBaggySmalls · 16/02/2017 19:40

Do people know the 'pearls' are probably electroplated beads allegedly?

OrangeIsTheNewPop · 16/02/2017 20:15

So it's basically like a shiny, fishy smelling, Huntastic Kinder Surprise?

Riiiiiight.

If the PearlHun was selling those crappy nail thingies at the same time, it'd play havic with them!

I don't need a pearl necklace. I'm wearing one with a plastic custard cream on it!

justgivemethepinot · 16/02/2017 20:18

Ah, a new wave of #bossbabes to entertain us in 2017.

RatHammock · 16/02/2017 20:20

CaoNiMa - I just did an actual LOL at your post.
