To not get these Pearl Parties

I see these 'pearl parties' on Facebook live all the time... I don't get it but people seem to be going nuts for them?
How does it work? Do any of you do them?

I watched some of the videos. Morbidly fascinating. And the "hosts" don't use a proper oyster shucking knife to open oysters. They're a bugger to open. Sea-food restaurants would be minted if every oyster contained a pearl. Confused

I haven't read the whole thread but years ago I had a summer job in Newquay working for a company called Newquay Pearl. They were essentially a jewellery store, specialising in pears - everything from 'high quality replicas', to cultured real pearls. They did the oyster opening thing back then (1997). You paid £20 and selected an oyster from a tank. They had all been x-rayed so were guaranteed to contain a pearl of some kind - from a not-great quality white pearl to a set of twin blue pearls etc. They would then set the pearl in a form of jewellery for you if you wanted.

Pearls can be grown in oysters. They're real and can be beautiful quality but they're essentially farmed.

Cao yes! I have been thinking the same - it would make a brilliant piece of research and I absolutely agree that it is to do with all the factors you mentioned- economic downturn, women's roles, breakdown of social ties etc.

I did a PhD on social capital creation and it struck me reading your post that MLMs are basically the opposite of the community orgs I studied.

The research could have a strong ethnographic element too I think.

I really would love to throw my energies (if I had any) into a campaign to get them banned. Does anyone know if I can help in some way? Do Timeless Vie campaign actively?

Blerg we're on thread 27 of an anti-MLM discussion, Timeless Vie and Botwatch were 'born' here. You are most welcome to visit Smile.

All the oysters contain pearls because they are cultured and grown in industrial scale in china

Actually that is not true for all these businesses. There's not a pearl put into an oyster in the Oyster somehow is resealed naturally period they come from oyster farms it's a real thing I've been to them and some of these companies that are doing Pearl parties this is where they purchase them from the only thing the oyster farms do is they do their process and making sure that they do produce a pearl you should look it up it's actually a pretty interesting process but actually very real. I actually do them myself I just started in it because I purchased you have actually have to pry these open if they were pried open to put a pearl in there everything would be broken. That's called an oyster Farm you can look that up look up the process I know I've seen ones for oyster in a can I don't know how those work I know for at least two companies they got from an oyster farm and the pearls are very real my pearls were actually worth almost $500 that I received when I purchased from a party

Well here's a little info I didn't read through all the threads so I don't know if this is been put out there. But an oyster does not have a nervous system they don't have pain and these oysters are grown in an oyster farm and they are stimulated so there's a very long process to it all to make sure that they do or majority of them have pearls they're very real pearls the oysters are not feeling pain it's a fact look it up it's also the fact that there are oyster farms .I myself ordered some from a party spent under $100 and my pearls when I took them in to have them checked even with some of their imperfections because they are natural pearls worth well over $400 and beautiful. Absolutely no different from pearls in a jewelry store majority of them come from an oyster Farm. But again the oysters do feel pain as they do not have that type of system. I cannot speak for all of the companies out there selling like oysters in a can but the two larger companies are very real they do get theirs from an oyster Farm there not some fairy fly-by-night company. These Pearl parties have been around for years it's very simple if you like pearls you're going to do the Pearl parties the oyster shucking parties if you like something else you're going to go somewhere else this actually is not a fad this kind of thing has been going on

Absolute nonsense. Natural pearls are extremely rare and cost thousands of pounds!

But again the oysters do feel pain as they do not have that type of system.
Nonsense again. If the oysters don't feel pain why do they create pearls?
