AIBU?

To potentially get our postman fired

DP is a camera geek. On the weekend he bought a camera trap for catching wildlife in the garden. He wanted to test it out so set it up by the front door so he could test it by the kids going in and out. It's been there since Sunday.

So this evening he had a look at the footage with DD(5). There's us, there's the cat, there's the postman. Oh look, there's the postman having a piss against our garden wall Shock.

Our door is round the side of the house, so out of sight from the road. There's the door, the path next to the house, a small patch of grass and the neighbours wall. He literally posted a letter, turned round, knob out, pissed all over the grass and wall. Knob away, off to post more letters, obviously without washing his hands. Envy

It was done so casually it's hard to believe he's not done it before. On the plus side, he posted our letters first so that won't be covered in piss Grin. But seriously, who would do that?!

Thing is, we're in a village where everyone knows each other, and he's been the postie for years. But IANBU to report him and potentially get him sacked am I?! I have a slight pricking of my conscience if he did lose his job, but surely that's his problem, not mine?!

Consider that he might have been desperate........I would show him some leniency but if it was a regular thing then I would be taking it further

Also you need to look up vouyerism (sic)

And also I definitely wouldn't report him. If just tell him not to piss in my garden.

Postmen are on a very tight schedule

He would probably be in trouble for leaving his route and going out to the toilet

Oh for heaven's sake...if it bothers you that much, have a word with him about it. Don't officially report him and have the poor man disciplined and possibly sacked. What would be the point, and would you really feel good about yourself for doing that?

It was on the lawn, yes. And yes, am well aware of what the wildlife do. But they are animals, I expect a grown man to have more self control Hmm.

I wouldn't report to the police necessarily, more Royal Mail. Like I said, if it's not that bad they won't sack him, will they? Confused

It doesn't take 5 mins to get to the next village when you have to stop at every house along the way. Posters are on ridiculously tight schedules unless they want to work unpaid overtime (daughter of former postie).

However you wouldn't BU to have a quiet word asking him not to do it again.

Soubriquet · 08/02/2017 21:26

Yes they probably would sack him

I think I'd put up a sign saying there are cameras in operation. Or mention it to him. Or get DH too.

I don't think I'd report him. I'm not sure why. It feels strong as a first step, I think.

That is grim. Really it isn't OK. I'm sure most of us have been caught short in an emergency, but this doesn't sound like that. The op doesn't describe him as hopping around cross legged, looking worried etc. It sounds like he just fancied a piss and whipped it out. I see some men doing it around here on footpaths. It is horrible. He could drive to the public loo in the next village, wee in a container in his van, or knock on a door.

Quite surprised at the number of posters who think it's OK to take a slash in someone else's garden Confused.

I'd report like a shot but then again I'm not in a village and our postie uses a van where presumably he could keep and use a portable pisspot should the need arise.

I think he needs to know you know and will take it further if necessary. That should be enough to keep him buttoned up Grin

Tbh I would watch the camera to see of he makes a habit of it. If he's pissing in your garden every day, tell him to stop. If it was a once off, then is really that terrible? (No)

YABU.for even considering reporting it to the police Hmm

I never see him - he arrives at 11ish, I'm at work.

I'm not a nosy neighbour, it's all DP's doing, I hate the damn thing filming me going in and out!

Write him a little note asking him not to do it again. When he arrives the following morning, be at the door to take the post, and say " here's one for you".

Can't believe so many people think it's fine! I'd give him a warning and report if he did it again.

Report
Amaried · 08/02/2017 21:28

Think it would be pretty horrible to report him and if he been the village postie for years, you'll just alienate all the neighbour who won't see the big deal about him being caught short

Life's too short to be so mean

actually pee is very good for your garden apparently.

But I wouldn't be happy about someone taking a leak in my garden. I'd confront him myself.

I have cctv,we ave a sign up.As long as its not pointed in anyone elses garden you should be fine.

But have a word with him first,at least give him a chance to not do it again.

Report
thequeenoftarts · 08/02/2017 21:32

I think I would just mention it to him, and ask him not to do it again. If he is a nice man and not in any way sleazy and you are cool with him using your toilet, I would say I would prefer if he did that, rather than piss in my garden.

I know someone who worked for virgin tv installation who had a shit into a bag on a customer's roof. He took the bag with him but still

This is why my DH when a postie took a bottle with him to pee in private in the van, also grim.

I woukd just let it go, Mabey drop him a note, that if he's desparate, just knock and ask to use the loo instead, if he's been your postie for years.

I know mumsnet isn't a hive mind, but I've been here nearly 12 years and usually it goes:

Potty training toddler having a wee in the street? Nooo OP, how could you allow this?

Plumber asks to use toilet while working on house 8 hours a day? OMG DISGUSTING. He's done a POO!

But postman casually pissing in the garden is absolutely fine?!

I'd not be thrilled OP. But agree probably wouldn't want him sacked. So you'll have to say something. Or put up a little gnome with a 'no fishing' sign you've doctored.

He does use a van Battleaxe. I will suggest DP puts a note up - I hadn't realised he'd put it there until DD pointed it out, it's not obvious.

Weirdly there is also a clip of a man in hi vis with a hammer who only goes down the path, he never came up it
