To wonder how far Trump will be allowed to go

before action is taken for the world's safety?

So far we've seen executive orders to increase nuclear defences, build the wall and stop all entry to the US from at least seven countries. Also executive orders winding female reproductive rights back several decades. There rumblings of restoring torture and various other things that aren't official yet.

Quite honestly this is part borne of my ignorance of how American constitution works but so far I'm really worried and wondering just quite how far he's going to be able to go before there are moves to stop him?

Before he was elected there was lots of 'don't worry he has to get through the house first' but he's done so much this week just because he wants to.

How much more?

May has to be diplomatic and maintain the best possible relations with the USA. She does not have the luxury of being able to act on feelings or her own opinion

Of course if we hadn't self-immolated with Brexit, May wouldn't feel that she had to go kowtow to that awful bastard. You know, if we had a bit of dignity, like a proper country.
Or we could just say fuck the cynical realpolitik and keep him at arm's length.

Redactio · 27/01/2017 00:47

Cock.
You mean now that we are about to be a proper country again, not a region of Europe, we can reclaim our dignity and keep the EU at arms length.
If you want to kowtow to awful bastards move to mainland Europe and kowtow to the un-elected commission that dominates everything.
Trump may be many things but 62 Million people voted for him, live with it.

Where's the dignity here? May sycophantically rushing off to the US? There is no dignity in this. It's fucking pathetic and embarrassing.

OhMrsQ · 27/01/2017 01:08

I'm a Brit living in a sanctuary city in the US, and I'm fucking terrified.

Its worse than 1984.

CORRECTION:::::::::CORRECTION

Upthread I posted that the wall would be paid for out of the aid normally given to Mexico.

Sean Spicer just announced that the wall will be paid for by putting a 20% import duty on all goods from Mexico.

The assembled journalists and media people all went WHAAAAAATTTT!.

Sean Spicer then 'walked back his comment' after criticism from Republicans.

Either
Everyone in the West Wing is on glue.
Or
Trump has gone in with a production company to make a political reality show co-written by the writers from The Office.

So now I don't know how the wall is going to be paid for.

And neither does Donald Trump.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 27/01/2017 01:11

Whoever was invited first would have turned up and made a show of how privileged they felt

What did you expect her to do turn down the offer

It's politics its sickening at times

EagleIsland The Republicans are meeting this week, not only to discuss how to roll back the Affordable Care Act and massive cuts to Medicare and Medicaid but also how to change employer sponsored health insurance into taxable income. Either you get health insurance from your employer, you are on Obamacare, or you are on Medicaid so you will be effected. .

If you are living remotely you are most likely drinking well water. Good luck with that when the EPA no longer fines companies for dumping hazardous waste unsafely.

Trump will most likely get rid of the mandate that requires children to be vaccinated if they wish to attend public school - your future baby will be exposed to measles, diphtheria, TB, etc.

Your child will have the choice of attending underfunded public schools, or going to a charter school where who knows who is teaching who knows what.

If you work in the nuclear industry just imagine what it will be like when Trump rolls back 75% of the regulations effecting businesses. I worked in the chemical industry. Companies do the minimum they need to do to meet legal requirements because they answer to share holders. When environmental and safety requirements are loosened pollution and unsafe work practices will go up.

Out2pasture · 27/01/2017 02:01

Well in Canada they've just announced the same, employer paid medical plans will be taxed as income.

EagleIsland · 27/01/2017 02:21

Like I said, Trump hasn't done anything to us Yet. Anything is possible from the Orange overlord.

I have been researching the employer sponsored healthcare, we will wait and see what that brings. The current system benefits employers as much as employees.

90% of the state is on well water, my experience so far is that the EPA do little to protect us already. My wife already refuses to drink our well water due to high hydrogen sulphide levels.

We have been discussing what would happen if the NRC were scaled back, and the power plants had less regulation. Many countries aroumd world have adopted the guidelines set out by the NRC, scaling this back would have vast knock on effects.

Nuclear power has a bad public image. Trump is pro nuclear which is good for us as the cost of power production will drop. However due to the public perception standards will have to remain high.

Hopefully he will do something good and reopen Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository. ISFSI dry cask storage is getting out of hand.

Theresa May to Donald Trump, quoted in today's Times ' there is nothing inevitable about conflict between Russia and the West. And nothing unavoidable bout retreating to the days of the Cold War. But we should engage with Russia from a position of strength' 😳

fakenamefornow · 27/01/2017 07:56

I really really wish I could. We are losing FOM just when we need it most.

RedToothBrush · 27/01/2017 09:46

Trade agreements = loss of sovereignty and some degree of FOM.

A bi-lateral trade deal with the US could leave us as less than the 51st state. Every one else who is queuing up for a trade deal wants more FOM.

It is driving me insane that there is this lack of understanding.

Plus Blair signed up to FOM immediately in 2004 when everyone else took the opt out. Yet this is the EU being nasty.

No it's the UK who were idiots and are now being manipulated by a bunch of people with a wet dream about NHS privatisation.

And half the population buy it because they don't understand democracy, trade, sovereignty or why the hell it's world Holocaust day.

We are screwed.
