To wonder how far Trump will be allowed to go

before action is taken for the world's safety?

So far we've seen executive orders to increase nuclear defences, build the wall and stop all entry to the US from at least seven countries. Also executive orders winding female reproductive rights back several decades. There rumblings of restoring torture and various other things that aren't official yet.

Quite honestly this is part borne of my ignorance of how American constitution works but so far I'm really worried and wondering just quite how far he's going to be able to go before there are moves to stop him?

Before he was elected there was lots of 'don't worry he has to get through the house first' but he's done so much this week just because he wants to.

How much more?

I am taking a more personal approach. I am concentrating on the impacts to our family. When I say he hasn't done anything to worry us, what I meant was that he is not threatening us yet.

I dislike Trump and I can definitely see parallels with 1933 here.

I would say that I am more libertarian in my view

Lorelei76 · 26/01/2017 19:50

Eagle - um, interesting approach.

Elendon "What is she thinking?" - probably that now she doesn't have Europe to rely on (in fairness she was a remainer) - she needs to keep good rels between UK and US.

anyone remember Danny Wallace "How to start your own country"?

only problem is I can't fit many of us in here Grin

A nuclear weapon produces a small amount of radiation. Radiation is waisted energy in a nuclear bomb.

Chernobyl was a industrial accident where a nuclear reactor caught fire. The radiation was released from the graphite core burning.

Out2pasture · 26/01/2017 19:53

"And if the make it up the coast" yes Canada has recently said they would ease immigration for Mexicans. I'm not sure of the numbers but they are significantly involved in fruit harvesting. Not sure how many overstay their work permits.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/01/2017 19:53

Can't the Mexicans hop on a small plane, helicopter, balloon?

I imagine the USAF would have views about that Wink

Apparently the US even has a Mexican Border Service Medal for those who've proved "deserving" while on duty there ...

CockacidalManiac · 26/01/2017 20:00

If the Canadians are building a wall, and trump builds a wall, can't we all chip in for a lid?

mimishimmi · 26/01/2017 20:01

Glen Yeadon: The Nazi Hydra in America.

The comparisons to 1933 are valid but have been since 9/11, or WW2 actually. Many of the sponsors of fascist movements around the world came from, and are still coming from, the US.

Riversleep · 26/01/2017 20:01

I wasn't worried about Trump. Like others, I thought he would be all bluster and would just get shouted down as soon as he got in. It now seems it's worse than I thought. He is completely ignoring his own party with his media witchhunt, counterbalancing any scrutiny of his claims with his own newspeak. His ordering of an investigation into voter fraud, despite there being absolutely no evidence, and all his advisors begging him to just let it go. He has absolutely no intention of being a President for all. He will go against anyone who didn't vote for him because he is vain, stupid and vengeful. He will punish the democrat states, stifle any creative industry and worse, trample over the rights of minorities and women. The most depressing thing is that in the US and this country, there are so many people who think that taking away the rights of the LGBT community, women and minorities is a great thing (See the ultra right religious nutjob Melanie Phillips in the Times for example), ridiculing peoples democratic right to protest. To say that has no effect is nonsense. It doesnt affect you if you're not on the list, but is that all that matters? If your own government has absolutely no intention of respecting your rights and freedoms, I'd say it would be a relief that others worldwide are taking notice and showing solidarity.

Can't the Mexicans hop on a small plane, helicopter, balloon

Or maybe a ladder? It'd take a awful lot of people to patrol...

OneWithTheForce · 26/01/2017 20:08

We are TTC,

I wish you luck with that. I really hope your wife has a healthy pregnancy. It must be a very worrying time in light of recent developments. If you care for your wife's health that is which I am sure you do.

roseforarose · 26/01/2017 20:10

What about "mutual assured destruction", would Trump and co really want to live in a nuclear wilderness. I'm sure Melania wouldn't be too happy either.

OneWithTheForce · 26/01/2017 20:14

I am taking a more personal approach. I am concentrating on the impacts to our family. When I say he hasn't done anything to worry us, what I meant was that he is not threatening us yet.

Translation: "I'm alright, Jack"

Chippednailvarnishing · 26/01/2017 20:16

Like Trump is thinking of Melania. Ever.

OneWithTheForce · 26/01/2017 20:22

All the people under attack by trump and his plans (women, Mexicans, gay people, black people, disabled people, anyone with an ounce of common sense) should go on indefinite strike. I wonder how quickly his "great" America would crumble.

youraveragemom · 26/01/2017 20:22

Unfortunately that's the problem with people right now. Trump is not bothering them because they have all the privileges. I'm a Brit in the USA and am increasingly frustrated and angry at what these executive orders will do to the sick, the poor, underprivileged women, etc. I personally will benefit from Trump through lower taxes, but I can't stand by and watch him take away support for others. If more people worried less about "their own" and more about the impact on everybody we wouldn't be in this mess.

EagleIsland · 26/01/2017 20:26

GiraffesAndButterflies

Up to you if you believe me or not on my line of work.

MalletsMallets · 26/01/2017 20:29

Trump hasn't done anything to worry me or my family yet
Trying to revoke the green treaty. Reintroducing fossil fuel production

It doesn't matter where in the world you live, you won't escape that fuck up

MrDacresEUSubsidy · 26/01/2017 20:33

Threads was awful - and it was terrifying precisely because it was so realistic and you could imagine it happening.

RedToothBrush · 26/01/2017 20:39

The worst bit: Every time you hear something new that he does, you become more desensitised to Trump. And every time that happens you slide down the slope a little more.

Trump's crazy comments are not crazy. They are part of fascist language. He says what needs to be true to justify what happens next.

EG:
Trump: There is lots of vote fraud and I'm going to investigate it.
What he intends to do: Disenfranchise a bunch of people. (Modern day Jim Crow laws).

Trump: All these immigrants doing terrorist attacks
What he intends to do: Deport lots of people and persecute them for being Islamic

Trump has stated he is thinking of sending the National Guard into Chicago to sort out gun violence there.

The National Guard being sent into Chicago by executive order would end up with the city alight with violence and that would spread to other cities. It effectively would start a war. Probably along racial lines.

For him, this isn't a bad thing though. In fact its positively good.

This would give Trump the excuse to introduce martial law. This extents the power of the executive. In certain situations the constitution can actually be suspended (see internment camps in WWII).

By that thinking Trump has every reason to WANT terrorist attack, or riots or an attack on white coppers by a black man for he can use it and twist it for his political ends.

Do not under estimate how on a knife edge the US is right now.

I think the thinking is - plan for the absolute worst in your head. Go to the darkest places of your imagination and don't dismiss it as being beyond possible. Then hope for the best.

On the positive side the executive orders (Bannon is writing) and that Trump is signing do sound illegal. The problem is upholding the law and challenging these executive orders.

And Theresa May is over there making a Trade Deal by flogging Trump the NHS. So its not all bad news....

SalemsCat · 26/01/2017 20:43

Red, I think your correct on all those points Sad

OneWithTheForce · 26/01/2017 20:43

Every time you hear something new that he does, you become more desensitised to Trump.

And distracted from all the other stuff he is already doing so forget to oppose it (if possible)

Out2pasture · 26/01/2017 20:45

Responsible use of fossil fuels can be exactly that done responsibly while other energy sources are initiated.
But not all countries are showing industrial responsibility with their techniques ( China India).

Lorelei76 · 26/01/2017 20:45

some of it is not "I'm all right Jack" so much as the Sally Bowles "but what's it got to do with us?"

A pp has said she didn't think Trump would ignore his own party. How could anyone ever think Trump cared about anything other than Trump?
