To wonder how far Trump will be allowed to go

before action is taken for the world's safety?

So far we've seen executive orders to increase nuclear defences, build the wall and stop all entry to the US from at least seven countries. Also executive orders winding female reproductive rights back several decades. There rumblings of restoring torture and various other things that aren't official yet.

Quite honestly this is part borne of my ignorance of how American constitution works but so far I'm really worried and wondering just quite how far he's going to be able to go before there are moves to stop him?

Before he was elected there was lots of 'don't worry he has to get through the house first' but he's done so much this week just because he wants to.

How much more?

How stupid to have their system set up in such a way that one individual can nuke half the world in 6 minutes if they decide to.

No other way to do it. If a nuclear attack was launched on the US they would have about 5-10mins to decide what to do - there is no time for meetings or advisors or votes.

if a nuclear attack is launched on the Uk how would we deal with it?

Motherofhowmany · 26/01/2017 17:29

we wouldn't. There is nothing we could do.

travailtotravel · 26/01/2017 17:30

I suspect he'll be careful about casually wandering past grassy knolls anytime soon. I think Donald and Kim from N Korea will get on swimmi

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/01/2017 17:30

We would launch Trident missiles (assuming our subs hadn't gone on fire, or hit a boat, or run aground or something). Unfortunately that missile would probably go in wrong direction but hey ho.

And then we'd either die quickly or slowly depending on where we are compared to where the missiles hit.

Chippednailvarnishing · 26/01/2017 17:32

I don't know whether to laugh or cry about the movement of the doomsday clock based on one person's new job...

Wonderflonium · 26/01/2017 17:32

But these aren't HIS ideas, he's doing whatever the last person who flattered him suggested that he do. Listen to how he speaks at press conferences/interviews, he's just repeating what was said at the briefing he just had (that speech was a home run... we don't need to talk about that anymore but it played really well in the campaign... I'm making this speech to prove there's no rift ).

Right now, he's enacting what the top brass in the Republican Party want. Once they've got the shit they want out of the way they can dispose of him AND blame him for any of it that is unpopular.

OneWithTheForce · 26/01/2017 17:35

We would launch Trident missiles

Who would launch them though? Would TM have the say over it?

Rhayader · 26/01/2017 17:35

Trump is allowed to go as far as his is going because Obama set the precedent for what a president can do with an executive order.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/01/2017 17:38

The current UK Trident warheads can also be launched by a submarine commander with the support of his crew without any code being transmitted from the chain of command.
Who would launch them though? Would TM have the say over it?

The British missiles are controlled through the Royal Navy chain of command all the way up to the Prime Minister. In reality the Prime Minister would make the launch decision in concert with whatever was left of the British government.

I'm still very much in shock that anyone actually voted for Donald trump to be the actual real POTUS, lets alone the fact he actually got elected. In years to come this will be one of the most hilarious history class topics ever. Students will piss themselves laughing at how people blindly walked themselves right into this mess let alone voted for it. That's if there are still schools in the future Hmm trump seems to have done ok without knowing anything.

Have you seen Threads?

barinatxe · 26/01/2017 17:40

If a nuclear attack was launched on the UK, the outcome depends on how many warheads were dispatched. One massive one in the "right" place would cause millions of deaths but would not destroy the country in the way that a concerted and coordinated attack would.

We wouldn't "deal" with it as such - there's nothing we could do to stop it. We would hopefully launch our own weapons to take out a sizable number of citizens of the country who attacked us, further slaughter being preferable to just "rolling over".

Whether the attack on us was large or small, the way it was "dealt with" would very much depend on the rest of the world. If North Korea nuked us, I think the US and Russia would be very helpful in taken out their chain of command and re-establishing the country. But if the USSR Russia decided to attack us with everything they've got, we'd be one barren island long before anyone could do anything to help.

But hey - being vaporized by a nuclear explosion directly above your head isn't all bad - no more worrying about Trump, for example!

OneWithTheForce · 26/01/2017 17:42

Ok so it's very clear that there is a way to launch such an attack without one person having total power over it.

No other way to do it. If a nuclear attack was launched on the US they would have about 5-10mins to decide what to do - there is no time for meetings or advisors or votes.

No, what is that?

Lorelei76 · 26/01/2017 17:43

in terms of not being his ideas - some aren't, I agree

but did anyone else want a wall?!

MalletsMallets · 26/01/2017 17:44

I've got faith in May, I get the impression she's a no bullshit sort of person. I think she has to go and see him, it's the same timeline as Britain meeting Obama.
We also do need to keep our international trade deals on the good side.

I've been worried about him signing all this as well, I too was under the impression he wouldn't get his barmy ideas through either. But he seems to! The nuke thing didn't worry me (even after his confusion about what a nuclear war would look like) until this week. No one seems to be stopping him.

UnoriginalNN · 26/01/2017 17:49

A link from ITV on what an executive order is.

UnoriginalNN · 26/01/2017 17:50

(And Paul Ryan is just as bad a Trump, just less obvious about it. He makes me sick)

Thanks steam

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/01/2017 17:55

Onewiththeforce Threads was a TV drama from the 80s, based on the lead up to the explosion of a nuclear bomb in Sheffield, its actual detonation and what happens afterwards. Strongly suggest you don't try to get a copy on DVD if you're easily upset; believe me it's absolutely desperate Sad

Also just wondering about the several posters who want "the CIA to fix the problem". Anyone care to exand on what you want them to do??

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/01/2017 17:56

Sorry, steam - cross posted with you Smile
