To wonder how far Trump will be allowed to go

before action is taken for the world's safety?

So far we've seen executive orders to increase nuclear defences, build the wall and stop all entry to the US from at least seven countries. Also executive orders winding female reproductive rights back several decades. There rumblings of restoring torture and various other things that aren't official yet.

Quite honestly this is part borne of my ignorance of how American constitution works but so far I'm really worried and wondering just quite how far he's going to be able to go before there are moves to stop him?

Before he was elected there was lots of 'don't worry he has to get through the house first' but he's done so much this week just because he wants to.

How much more?

I can't see him lasting his full term.
The problem is, I can't see any of us lasting his full term either.

ohfourfoxache · 26/01/2017 16:53

So even if he and Pence were "unavailable" then one of his mad cronies would take their place?

There isn't much hope then, is there?

CockacidalManiac · 26/01/2017 16:56

I'm hoping that the CIA fix this for us.
One way or another.

Mynestisfullofempty · 26/01/2017 16:58

"I'm hoping that the CIA fix this for us.
One way or another."

It's our only hope.

CockacidalManiac · 26/01/2017 16:59

Looks like it'd be Paul Ryan. He's not a friend of Trump, but a bit of a Ayn Randian loony in his own way.
I don't think he's quite as mad as Trump and Pence though.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 26/01/2017 17:00

both houses are republican

and there is a lot of infighting his enemies are within his own party

and thank fuck not all will support him so he won't get everything through like he hopes to now matter how determined he is

yes the CIA should fix the problem of Trump

HyacinthsBucket · 26/01/2017 17:00

From what I understood reading about the ban on entry into the US - it was a temporary hold until better vetting could be put into place? They said for 4 months all immigration from these countries was banned, not for life. I can't say that I agree with a lot of his policies, but clearly a lot of Americans do and he got into power because of it.

ISIS are now claiming that there are at least 6000 jihadis across Europe, that have all been allowed access to countries due to lack of vetting/open borders. You can't help but see why Trump is taking a step back if that is true. And god help us if it is.

OneWithTheForce · 26/01/2017 17:00

There isn't much hope then, is there?

Nope.

Lorelei76 · 26/01/2017 17:01

luckily I'm a pessimist
I heard a lot of talk about how if he got in, the structure of the government wouldn't allow him to do much

I wasn't sure - I don't pretend to know a lot about their structure - but here we are in week 1 and even the Dow Jones is happy with his behaviour. He can't be stopped.

yesterday we were talking about if California secedes - well yes the whole world would rush to apply for citizenship but if they dared try it he'd just nuke them into oblivion. And he has a lot of support.

CockacidalManiac · 26/01/2017 17:02

I don't think his generals like or trust him either. Jesus; when you're depending on the common decency of the US military and CIA to save us all, the world has truly turned upside down.

CockacidalManiac · 26/01/2017 17:04

From what I understand, the power of the POTUS is severely curtailed by other branches of government. I'm hoping cooler heads prevail here.

fakenamefornow · 26/01/2017 17:05

I heard something really worrying on R4 a while ago. I didn't catch the beginning so it may not quite be true, I can't really believe it is.

Anyway, I heard that the US president can order the deployment of nuclear weapons on his say so alone. Nobody else needs to agree to this, nobody can veto it, or delay it. A member of the armed forces follows him everywhere carrying the nuclear box thing, Trump just has to turn to him to order an attack, if he refuses he will be court marshaled, in other words he can't refuse the order, nobody can. It would take about six minutes between Trump's say so and missiles taking off.

As I said I missed the very beginning so hope I missed hearing about some safeguards, and that they do exist.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 26/01/2017 17:07

Christ that's scary fake. How can Americans empower one man (or woman) so much? It's crazy.

Mynestisfullofempty · 26/01/2017 17:07

OMG fakenamefornow Shock That's terrifying!

CockacidalManiac · 26/01/2017 17:09

That'll be why Theresa May is trying to crawl up his arse then. It'll be the safest place when the missiles are launched.

RedToothBrush · 26/01/2017 17:15

It depends on how long it takes Republicans to gain a backbone.

So maybe never.

TheFilthiestPersonAlive · 26/01/2017 17:17

I think there is a bill in the house now (?vague) trying to curtail Trump's nuclear ability.

I am not totally sure if he can just order a nuclear attack just like THAT.

God I hope the CIA fix it. I've gone from bemused to actually very worried. Although the protests/outcry will not stop, which gives me some hope.

Lorelei76 · 26/01/2017 17:18

fakename, I find that surprising for a number of reasons so hopefully it isn't true.

I'm not so much worried that Trump will end the whole world, more that he will make it even less worth living in!!!

OneWithTheForce · 26/01/2017 17:18

How stupid to have their system set up in such a way that one individual can nuke half the world in 6 minutes if they decide to. Trump is so unstable that that is a very realistic scenario.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/01/2017 17:21

If Trump is impeached or chokes in his own bile, then
. successor # 1 is his Republican vice-Prez Mike Pence
. next in line is the Republican Speaker

Both are unpleasant hard right politicians, but not blow-up-the-world-in-a-tantrum batshit.
They'd also support alliances like NATO, so international stability is more likely

Trump is uniquely dangerous, like Year Zero in Cambodia.

harderandharder2breathe · 26/01/2017 17:22

I'm really not happy that Theresa May is bleating on about leading the world together the day he says water boarding works and the week he has undone so much of women's reproductive rights

Motherofhowmany · 26/01/2017 17:22

Supreme Court are the ony hope right now, but a couple are very close to death/retirement and guess who gets to pick their replacements...

lionheart · 26/01/2017 17:23

I think I heard that too, fake. Can't remember who was speaking but someone from a past US govt. He said that in any situation, you might have 5-10 minutes to decide your move.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 26/01/2017 17:25

there isn't a red button

he is head of the chain of command so the instruction has to come from him but its very complex set of instructions that a number of people are involved in

I do believe he is foolish enough to make the threat and quite sure he will at some point but he will be pulled back

and even if he did go ahead that would mean a number of people would have to take his instructions they would be challenged, and even if it bypassed that they would all have to be as mad and stupid as him and I don't believe they are

GinIsIn · 26/01/2017 17:25

Actually that's thankfully not true - it has to also be authorised by the secretary of defence and pushing the button is a two man operation.

And fortunately the secretary of defence is Trump's one sane cabinet member. (Pro-nato, anti-Russia)
