AIBU to present you with a mystery box and not open it?

Today I recieved a parcel from a nc relative who doesn't seem to have quite got the message. Every year I get a passive aggressive christmas card which I duly ignore. Now I have a box. I've been informed by another relative it's a birthday gift. Do I open it? Send it back?

Open it then re seal it and send it back

You can do whatever you want to do with it but don't send it back.

You are being completely unreasonable. You didn't include a photo so we can all waste hours guessing what's inside.

I went NC with my entire family end of november and worried what i'd do in this situation if i got a christmas card. Thankfully none of them sent one, was awkward for my sister opening presents from them all with me there though. If you wouldn't keep the gift anyway regardless what it is, i'd send it back unopened. I wouldn't ever keep something off someone i was NC with, and it would likely anger me to see what it was anyway as knowing my family it would be something completely useless to me and i'd get wound up because their complete disinterest in contact or knowing anything about me is why i went NC.

Open it! But don't send it back and don't contact them. You are NC after all and it will annoy the hell out of them that they don't know whether you received it, opened it, kept it etc

All of your answers make sense. I don't know what to do. On the one hand I'm as curious as the rest of you. On the other if I open it then I have an awkward gift to deal with.

Can you give it to someone else (DP maybe?) To open and vet the contents?

Give it to the other relative you mention in the OP to deal with. NC is NC. I think you are being tested.

I don't think it's dangerous. Feels like it could be fabric of some kind but inside a box so not sure.
