They survived Dubya, they will also survive Trump. The US president's power at home is restricted, and although his party hold the senate half of them think he's a lunatic. There was no good choice in this election and although it's disappointing that there still hasn't been a female president, the 'end is nigh' comments are a bit OTT!!

DoNotBlameMeIVotedRemain · 09/11/2016 07:29

Plus looks like Republican majority in Senate and Congress so no one to check him in US.

BipBippadotta · 09/11/2016 07:29

I also really don't get how people can compare Clinton to him. Clinton is an averagely corrupt career politician. This man is a dangerously unintelligent, largely politically uninterested, megalomaniacal sociopath.

Thora I can't help but agree that contempt for women has a great deal to do with this. As Barbara Kingsolver said in the Guardian the other day 'if anyone still doubts that the inexperienced man gets promoted ahead of the qualified woman, you can wake up now.'

The US have elected a reality TV star to run the fucking country.

Mouseinahole · 09/11/2016 07:29

Churchill said that:"Democracy is the worst form of government except for all the others!"
The comparison's of Trump's rise with Hitler's are terrifying in the extreme.
In the whole of America was there no sane and principled candidate for the post of most powerful man in the world?

CrazyCavalierLady · 09/11/2016 07:31

I agree with User. The world survived the US led GFC in 2007 and we'll survive this.

To the pp who said Americans are uneducated - this is not necessarily true however they are not, by and large, worldly. Only 45% have a passport. When you consider their defence force personnel and celebrities, that leaves very few everyday Americans who have travelled. These people live in a country that thrives on patriotism. They are taught that they live in the best country in the world, that they are responsible for the free world, that the rest of us aspire to be like them or move there to become one of them and with no basis of comparison and little contact with "foreigners" (excluding immigrants who, by their existence, support the myth), middle America believes what they are told.

I'm hoping that the reports that DT isn't popular within his own party are true and the they'll shackle him like they did Obama.

DeviTheGaelet · 09/11/2016 07:31

Yes lumpy.

mollie trumps election is very similar to brexit. I'm sure trumps voters feel the same about being called "uneducated" as leavers do.

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 09/11/2016 07:31

I suspect men won this election for Trump

Unfortunately, I don't think it was a case of men voting for Trump and women voting for Clinton. It's too simplistic. While it's shocking, Trump has had a large number of female supporters - God knows why, but when someone different comes along who promises to rescue the poor and disenfranchised, of which there are many in the US, people will support him (see: Corbyn - although absolutely not tarring him with the same brush!)

MoonriseKingdom · 09/11/2016 07:32

Bloody hell! What a disaster.

Apparently the Canadian immigration website has crashed.

Blueisthemagicnumber · 09/11/2016 07:32

I worked in the States as a Nanny 20 years ago for a Republican family, and I found out that a lot of people HATE Hilary. And it's a really strong hate, to the extent they would never vote for her.

derxa · 09/11/2016 07:32

The USA voted for Obama for two terms. The idea that the electorate have suddenly turned into thick hillbillies is a bit silly.

RoseGoldHippie · 09/11/2016 07:33

I have thought he would win for quite a while now, I don't know why just a gut feeling.

However he hasn't won quite yet (as BBC news keep telling me) fingers crossed for some miracle!

TheDowagerCuntess · 09/11/2016 07:33

In a way, I'm glad he's won.

Now he has to do all the things he promised he would do, like rid the world of ISIS.

He now has to implement all his grand plans.

This is where his followers get to see what he actually is.

dementedma · 09/11/2016 07:33

This, as was Brexit, is democracy folks. The alternative to allowing the uneducated to vote is to have a dictatorships. Which do you prefer?
The phrase " thick hillbillies" is unbelievably crass

Livelovebehappy · 09/11/2016 07:33

Obviously the people of America are so unhappy and disillusioned with their lot that they see their only way out is to go with Trump. All we need now is for Corbyn to win the next election here, and then we'll know the world really has gone mad. Corbyn and Trump?? Feel sick at the thought.

Tiredbutfuckingfine · 09/11/2016 07:34

Fucking bollocks.

Thefitfatty · 09/11/2016 07:34

I feel like I did on 9/11. Like the world has changed forever in a matter of hours, and not for the better.

UnseenAcademical · 09/11/2016 07:34

The world has truly gone to hell in a handbasket.

YouTheCat · 09/11/2016 07:35

Go home , America. You're drunk.

LondonNicki · 09/11/2016 07:35

Mollie - there are obvious parallels with Brexit. You only have to read the comments sections of the DM and Express to see the racist hateful nationalism that was behind a huge number of leave votes.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 09/11/2016 07:35

World's going to hell in a handbasket.

But it's no surprise - fascist-tendency right wing pollies in charge in the UK, Australia too - so why not the USA? I'm sure also in European countries (but cba to check) - it's the way the world is going at the moment. Self-interest, money talking, anyone expecting money for nothing is a scrounger, everyone should work for everything, no charity, no selflessness, no understanding, no compassion, no genuine civilisation.

And the media are driving a lot of it. Because Big Money wins out of this, and they're the ones with their hands on the reins.

I don't care if I sound like a conspiracy theorist - it's how I feel about the whole shitstorm.

areyoubeingserviced · 09/11/2016 07:35

Apparently Selina Scott said that he sent her a number of hateful ,sexist letters after she had interviewed him for a documentary.
He didn't like the way she had portrayed him, She read out the content of some of the letters and even I was shocked by the level of misogyny. He even told her that she had seen better days.
This is the man who may be the next President of the U.S.

GingerIvy · 09/11/2016 07:36

Yes I think that FBI announcement was a calculated attack and did a lot of damage. I note the climb down from it was much quieter.

If he wins (as it isn't quite over yet) the raving lunatics that voted for him will go mad when they realise that no he actually can't do everything he said he would do. It always was the equivalent of a child running for school office promising free ice cream and no maths.

Mummyoflittledragon · 09/11/2016 07:36

Mollie - Brexit was far more about an angry, disenfranchised populous than sane people voting against an undemocratic EU. If you want to believe otherwise, that's fine. However we only need to look at Brexit strongholds to uphold my POV.

Agn61 · 09/11/2016 07:36

derxa - I'll take the hillbillies back but any women who voted for Trump is thick. I'm not taking that back.

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 09/11/2016 07:37

live

You think Corbyn and Trump will team up together?! That, at least, has given me a chuckle. Very similar characters, aren't they?
