That isn't how US elections work, I'm afraid

It is much more about mobilising certain groups to vote, because you know which way they are likely to vote

So Obama voters haven't converted to Trump voters. He had a 98% approval rating with black and Hispanic voters. They usually have a turnout rate of around 45% but the Obama campaign was able to increase that turnout.

Trump has done the same with the White uneducated vote in a way Romney wasn't able to.

I can't get over "Muslims for Trump". Shock

BipBippadotta · 09/11/2016 07:39

Jess I think internalised misogyny has a lot to do with why women voted for him, just as internalised racism can influence the votes of ethnic minorities. Looks like he did bizarrely well among Asian and Hispanic voters. People like to think 'I'm not one of those minorities' / 'I'm not one of those ballbreaking women.' By voting for someone who makes disparaging comments about your group you can feel you're clearing yourself of those judgements.

What I don't understand is why disenfranchised people who are so disenchanted with politics are willing to believe anything any aspiring politician says. For a part of the population always spoken about as being jaded and cynical about politics, they have an awful lot of optimism that radical change is possible through politics.

Highlandfling80 · 09/11/2016 07:39

The UK went mad when they believed a twat like Farage and voted for Breast. Now looks like USA are doing the same with Trump. Very sad.

LordRothermereBlackshirtCunt · 09/11/2016 07:39

Trump and Corbyn not the same thing at all. Trump's message is hate and validating of people's prejudices. We won't get Corbyn here, not with his views on immigration. Things will lurch further right instead, and quite quickly, I imagine.

megletthesecond · 09/11/2016 07:39

That's interesting maddening.

ptumbi · 09/11/2016 07:39

I don't want to live in a little england after Brexit.

I really don't want to live in Little America after Trump.

And with 3 boys of cannon fodder age, I am terrified.

Highlandfling80 · 09/11/2016 07:40

Brexit. What it it with auto-correct?

Thefitfatty · 09/11/2016 07:40

They survived Dubya

Did they? ISIS is the direct result of Dubya. The economy right now is the direct result of Dubya. They haven't survived him, the world is still trying to get over his presidency.

Livelovebehappy · 09/11/2016 07:40

Agree wth Dementedma. Much is made about only the 'educated' having voted against Brexit, based on the fact that London voted to remain, and London is considered the place where the high flyers live. But the truth is London is full mostly of migrants these days, so obviously turkeys are not going to vote for a Christmas.

MrandMrsW · 09/11/2016 07:40

Just heard on BBC news that Hilliard has conceded!!!

MrandMrsW · 09/11/2016 07:41

Hilliary* sorry

GrinchyMcGrincherson · 09/11/2016 07:42

Hilary had three hurdles. The first was the hatred so many people have for her (justified or not) The second was being a woman and the Third is her strong pro life stance. I've heard seemingly rational people say they can't vote for her because she is pro life ignoring basically everything else on both sides.

There are lots of articles about why she's hated and there are an astonishing number of known Christian leaders who came out on trumps side seemingly entirely as a pro life vote.

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 09/11/2016 07:42

lord. Agreed - the most worrying thing for me is that Trump's win will give the UK a 'valid' opportunity to do so.

Thatwaslulu · 09/11/2016 07:42

It feels like the end of days.

BipBippadotta · 09/11/2016 07:43

I don't think I can bear to listen to her concession speech. I don't think I will be turning on the news for another 4 years, I just can't stand it.

Livelovebehappy · 09/11/2016 07:44

Itshouldhsvebernjess; of course I don't expect Trump and Corbyn to pal up. You misinterpreted what I said. What I meant was both being world leaders would be unthinkable.

Clinton isn't pro-life. She is pro-choice

cauliwobbles · 09/11/2016 07:44

He's a complete twat but Congress runs America, not the president. Look at everything Obama's been blocked on by congress over his presidency. It's going to be a huge PR nightmare too as regardless of what he'll be able to achieve out of his crazy schemes they won't be able to stop him running his mouth off and perhaps making some v v influential people around the world v angry and insulted.

MrandMrsW · 09/11/2016 07:45

It's official :(

JoyLibs · 09/11/2016 07:45

The mood was really subdued earlier, and most of my friends are baffled. It's terrifying to see that this could've happened. It feels like we've taken a large step backward. Somehow an inexperienced, temperamental, sexist, and racist businessman and entertainer has been deemed to be more competent than a woman whose biggest flaws are purported to be corruption and lying. But he lies too and is also corrupt so I'm not sure where exactly his advantage lies.

Republicans now control the legislative and executive branches. And since the republicans delightfully refused to vote on Obama's nominations for the Supreme Court, it's likely that will be Republican majority as well.

The only perverse, bittersweet enjoyment I'm getting out of this is that a large chunk of Trump's voter base are the ones who will be most negatively affected by his policies. When the Republican Party continues slashing welfare budgets, they'll only have themselves to blame.

RJnomore1 · 09/11/2016 07:46

I can't help thinking South Park have it right with their choice between a turd and a douche but somehow this is terrifying. He doesn't even strike me as emotionally stable. Fuck.

QuackDuckQuack · 09/11/2016 07:46

It's no coincidence that the generation that were the youngest adults in WW2 is dying out and someone with parallels to Hitler is elected. Terrifying.

jacks11 · 09/11/2016 07:47

It is depressing that the majority of the US feels the best man to be president is a man who is so filled with hatred, who is a racist, misogynist and who is clearly temperamentally unsuited to hold any sort of power. A billionaire businessman who has not paid his taxes for decades, who comes from a wealthy family, yet proclaims not to be a member of the elite and that he will represent the poor and downtrodden ! I am baffled.

I strongly suspect that the only person who Trump will represent is himself, this whole thing has been about his ego.

I genuinely fear for what the future holds with this man as president.
