Donald Trump has pledged to drain the swamp of big money Washington politics.

Southallgirl · 09/11/2016 11:49

blackhair Those around me who support Corbyn are essentially communist or very left wing. A friend of mine is a well-off commie aged 70. Very intelligent, but her whole ideology is black or white, no nuances, as is that of her daughter. She still does not grasp that in order for jobs to exist, an employer has to move into the area. Her quandry is: all bosses are capitalist bastards, no one should work for them ........ and then she gets stuck because it's a dead end.

She favours working for the State in all areas, but does not grasp that in order for there to be innovation, creativity and progress there needs to exist competition. If you recall when East and West Germany reunified, the West Germans had a hell of a time trying to get the Easterners to do very simple work. They had never had to use initiative, imagination or take responsibility and it did not work out for a whole generation.

Greengoddess12 · 09/11/2016 11:49

I lived through the Clinton impeachment and never trusted the clintons. He's as mysogynistic and vile as the orange one.

Now amazed that so many mumsnetters think that other women around the world belive in equal rights and bodily autonomy for other women.

Millions of women works wide are anti abortion, millions of women see the man as superior and head of the house, millions of women world wide cling to ridiculous dress codes that turn them into a homogenous and literally faceless irrelevance and most FGM procedures ar carried out by women on young girls.

WrongTrouser · 09/11/2016 11:51

Telling people that they are thick, stupid, racist and ignoring their concerns doesn't win votes, it just alienates people. Especially if your policies overtly benefit the wealthier members of society

I agree with this.

Interesting article in the Guardian on this.

Donald Trump is moving to the White House, and liberals put him there -
Thomas Frank

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/nov/09/donald-trump-white-house-hillary-clinton-liberals

How did the journalists’ crusade fail? The fourth estate came together in an unprecedented professional consensus. They chose insulting the other side over trying to understand what motivated them. They transformed opinion writing into a vehicle for high moral boasting. What could possibly have gone wrong with such an approach?

Put this question in slightly more general terms and you are confronting the single great mystery of 2016. The American white-collar class just spent the year rallying around a super-competent professional (who really wasn’t all that competent) and either insulting or silencing everyone who didn’t accept their assessment. And then they lost

Maybe it’s time to consider whether there’s something about shrill self-righteousness, shouted from a position of high social status, that turns people away

I don't have an in depth knowledge of American politics but this article rings true for me in describing what is happening in the UK, with Brexit and with the sorry state of the Labour party.

MaudlinNamechange · 09/11/2016 11:52

Please can someone explain to me why Hillary Clinton is so hated?

I keep asking people in real life (including a bunch of USA people I was at a party with). Everyone has been saying things like "well obviously Trump would be a disaster, but the problem is people really don't like hillary and may well vote for Trump." So I ask about hillary and I don't get an answer. So I say "is it because she is a woman?" and they say "oh no, not that, or not really, it's all the other stuff." and I say "what other stuff?" but I'm still not really clear on it.

can anyone help me with that?

Not that it fucking helps. This is a disaster and trying to understand it is just a pointless reflex. So yeah, who cares

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 09/11/2016 11:52

The years of shutting down debate with "ism" are surely over?

Those years will be over when right-wingers become able to debate without resorting to racism, sexism and the like. Until then, people will continue to call out prejudice when they see it.

JellyBelli · 09/11/2016 11:53

If racism is more acceptable to you than common human decency, its you that has the problem.

LittleLionMansMummy · 09/11/2016 11:54

Well precisely shove. His odiousness is there for all to see and hear, but apparently we're all just trying to paint a bad picture of him and everything is allegation and conjecture. No, he really is that bad, as his own words testify in the strongest way possible.

FelineJustFine · 09/11/2016 11:55

sorry my net went down
In his victory speech, he didn't sound as hateful and unpleasant towards those of different beliefs/cultures/race etc.
Saying We all need to unite, no matter what religion or race. I'd say a lot of hardcore Trump supporters were horrified at that speech.
He's still a dick though.

LillianGish · 09/11/2016 11:56

Haven't got to the end of the thread yet, so apologies if this has been said before, but this this is nothing like Brexit. In four years, if the AMerican public decides it has made a mistake they can vote Trump out - in 8 years he is out anyway. Brexit means Brexit - no chance for rethink if the promised improvements don't happen and even hardened Brexiteers have a change of mind. We will be living with the consequences of Brexit forever. Trump is a minor blip.

nauticant · 09/11/2016 11:57

I heard similar speeches from Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May. It's best not to rely on victors' speeches.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 09/11/2016 11:58

He'd probably had a quick read of Dummies Guide to Sounding Presidential in the limo on the way over.

Wonder what his automaton wife thinks of being First Lady. Wonder if she plans to pinch all of Michelle Obama's speeches.

jemster123 · 09/11/2016 11:58

What with Brexit and now this! It's clear to me what needs to happen. We need to invert the principle of democracy and ignore the voice of the -MAJORITY- as that's clearly where all the dumb people are!

The histronics on this thread are unbelievable.

'The end is nigh', 'the world has gone to hell in handbasket' 'voted in by thick hillbillies and the uneducated', 'trump aka hitler'

I've got some grips if you would like them? Shall I just throw the whole lot in and you can fight over them to help you through the inevitable end of the world?

This is exactly the same reaction that Brexit got and look, several months down the line, everything is the same! Although Toblerone now resembles traffic cones rather than mountains.

He has been elected, yes. But you have to rememeber that he cannot build walls, ban religions or push big red buttons without the agreement of congress. Almost half of which are democrats and most of the republican half think his policies are OTT and wouldn't back him.

I don't think he was the better choice but the American people chose otherwise. The very definition of democracy is currently being made a mockery of by people protesting and crowing 'Not my President' on the streets.

Funny that the liberal lefties shout the bloody loudest when they don't get their own way!

winterisnigh · 09/11/2016 12:00

wrongtrouser

interesting article but states things we have heard time and time and time again.
Maybe it’s time to consider whether there’s something about shrill self-righteousness, shouted from a position of high social status, that turns people away

This in spades.
People fail to understand, Trumps appeal has crossed religion, yes incl muslims, minorities etc.

ThisIsReallyNotMyName · 09/11/2016 12:00

GrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrin. Time for change and a clear out of the Washington elite. The US people voted for this change.

HarHer · 09/11/2016 12:00

Well, the Brexit result surprised me and so has Trump's 'victory'. However, one thing is certain, a lot of people seem to want change and the 'reasonable, common-sense, trusted' systems do not seem to be working for many people. At least Trump has a plan.

MaudlinNamechange · 09/11/2016 12:01

"Maybe it’s time to consider whether there’s something about shrill self-righteousness, shouted from a position of high social status, that turns people away"

The trouble with this is that there actually is a difference between competence and incompetence; between dangerous hatred that will damage us all (in purely practical terms), and a more sophisticated outlook which recognises the interconnectedness of everything and wants to work in a cleverer and more constructive way.

If you resent people who think in a different and more sophisticated way than you, those people don't need to be shrill, or self righteous, or to shout, to be resented. It's important that competent people speak, but what can you do if they are hated when they do?

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 09/11/2016 12:01

This is exactly the same reaction that Brexit got and look, several months down the line, everything is the same!

Er, you do realise that Brexit hasn't happened yet?

winterisnigh · 09/11/2016 12:02

I have to say my biggest worry is this use of the word thick - we see it all the time on MN and in left politics, there is an idea out there that only educated people are allowed to vote and it worries me Trump and Brexit will be used as excuses for the left when they eventually get it to erode democracy. They don't like it.

ApproachingATunnel · 09/11/2016 12:02

i trully thought that the world has learned the lessons of ww2 and Hitler but i was wrong. What we are seeing is the beggining of the history repeating itself albeit potentially on an even bigger scale and more powerful weapons involved.
What an utterly depressing turn of events. We are heading to something dreadful. Sad

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 09/11/2016 12:02

My eyes, my eyes!

Trump has won 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 09/11/2016 12:03

Funny that the liberal lefties shout the bloody loudest when they don't get their own way!

What, like Trump claiming the voting was rigged against him before it having even taken place? Is that the kind of bloody shouting you're referring to?

princesshaley · 09/11/2016 12:05

The only way I could explain it is that a lot of Americans are so against the thought of a female president, even though she has 30+ years experience that they voted for a circus monkey with rabies instead.
