At least Trump has a plan.

Oh yes, how wonderful that he has a plan. Of course, it doesn't matter that the plan involved removing women's reproductive rights, repealing gay rights, refusing to take in refugees, building a great big fucking wall paid for by the country they're trying to keep out... but yeah, at least it's a plan.

It doesn't matter if he'll need approval from congress etc. The point is that he wants these things to happen, and the American public have voted for it on that basis, which makes anyone who voted for Trump absolutely disgusting in my eyes.

LillianGish · 09/11/2016 12:05

SOme people don't like Hillary because she voted in favour of the Iraq war, the Midwest states - or the Rustbelt - moved from blue to red over the Clinton support of NAFTA which helped destroy industry there, lots of people don't like her because they don't like the idea of Dynasty politics - i.e. Bush following Bush then Clinton following Clinton ...

areyoubeingserviced · 09/11/2016 12:06

Brexit hasn't happened yet btw. Just saying

LittleLionMansMummy · 09/11/2016 12:06

This is exactly the same reaction that Brexit got and look, several months down the line, everything is the same!

Only:

  1. Brexit has not yet happened so you have no way of knowing what the longer term impact will be; and
  1. That is not strictly true is it? A huge rise in race hate crime and the value of the pound has plummeted. Oh, and the UK is more divided than it has ever been, certainly in my memory.
HappyGoLuckyGirl · 09/11/2016 12:07

I do realise it hasn't happened yet, yes. But there was all sorts of commotion about our economy in the days after Brexit. The pound would crash, banks would have to pour billions into the ecomony to prevent the entire country from grinding to a halt. Absurd.

And no, that's not the shouting I'm talking about. I'm talking about the democratic supporters currently out on the streets protesting and claiming they will not recognise Trump as president. Democracy for the win.

LillianGish · 09/11/2016 12:07

SHould have said my previous post was aimed at Maudlin who asked why some people don't like Hillary.

BoredofBrexit · 09/11/2016 12:08

And it's only because they live in a democracy they can protest in the street, HGLGirl. The irony of the liberals acting like dictators. And all their references to Hitler but in the next sentence they call someone out for being different to them - inferring a lack of 'purity'. Hmmm.

WrongTrouser · 09/11/2016 12:09

winterisnigh

These things have been said many times before but an awful lot of people seem to not be able to move take any alternative views on board and can't seem to get past sticking their fingers in their ears and shouting "This system works for me so it must work for you and if you say it doesn't that's because you have been duped/are stupid/are racist."

LittleLionMansMummy · 09/11/2016 12:09

Um, the pound has crashed Happy...

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 09/11/2016 12:10

If people are thick, stupid, and racist, the conversation shouldn't be about why we must say so, or mind. It should be about how we can get them to stop being thick, stupid, and racist.

Why do you think it comes up so much? because so many people are thick and racist, and they get cross when they're called on it.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 09/11/2016 12:10

*And no, that's not the shouting I'm talking about. I'm talking about the democratic supporters currently out on the streets protesting and claiming they will not recognise Trump as president. Democracy for the win.

But it was okay for Trump to undermine democracy by claiming the system was rigged against him? Okay dear.

MaudlinNamechange · 09/11/2016 12:11

"This is exactly the same reaction that Brexit got and look, several months down the line, everything is the same!"

1 - Brexit hasn't happened yet. when it legally happens, lots of things will change. So far nothing has happened.

2 - however - already the pound has plummetted

3 - in my industry, lack of confidence in Britain's future as a trading partner is already having a negative impact.

I'm sorry, but "This is exactly the same reaction that Brexit got and look, several months down the line, everything is the same!" - really shows lack of informed thinking.

I am getting very upset at the criticism and annoyance at people who do know what is going on being blamed for the results of the actions of people who don't know what is going on. because they aren't sucking up to them enough? in the right way? what? How is knowing what is going on some sort of awful snobbish character flaw? No one is keeping the newspapers from you. this isn't an issue of elitism. If you resent informed people so much, get informed, and then you don't have to!

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 09/11/2016 12:11

But there was all sorts of commotion about our economy in the days after Brexit. The pound would crash

Oh dear.

Don't you read the news? The pound has crashed.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 09/11/2016 12:12

I agree with what Corbyn has said

And I am not in anyway a supporter of Corbyn but that is for another thread

MaudlinNamechange · 09/11/2016 12:12

Thanks Lillian

birdybirdywoofwoof · 09/11/2016 12:12

This is exactly the same reaction that Brexit got and look, several months down the line, everything is the same!

Wow.

People fail to understand, Trumps appeal has crossed religion, yes incl muslims,
Winterisnigh, where are the stats on the muslim vote, please.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 09/11/2016 12:13

But it was okay for Trump to undermine democracy by claiming the system was rigged against him?

Oooh ooh don't forget saying he'd refuse to accept the result if he lost!

But yes, it's the liberals who are undemocratic...

shovetheholly · 09/11/2016 12:14

Check out the NY Times demographic analysis of the vote, based on exit polls. It suggests Trump supporters are more likely to be white, older, less educated, small town, conservative and Christian.

Interestingly, income appears NOT to be a factor - the poorest tended to poll for Clinton, but support for Trump is more or less consistent in brackets above $50,000. (This perhaps puts some perspective on the fact that far more Trump supporters than Clinton supporters describe their situation as worse now than it was in the recent past).

A7mint · 09/11/2016 12:15

the pound has plummeted and the company i work for have never had it so good!

MaudlinNamechange · 09/11/2016 12:16

"Funny that the liberal lefties shout the bloody loudest when they don't get their own way!"

Firstly there are lots of lefties who aren't liberals, so conflating the two doesn't help.

Secondly - it's really not about "not getting their own way". this is a misunderstanding. It's about objectively bad outcomes.

It's not "everyone but me wanted to go to soft play and I wanted to go to the beach so now I am sulking". It's "everyone but me wanted to bomb the beach, which is beautiful and ecologically vital and irreplaceable for future generations, and they don't even really understand what this means, and now I am gutted"

Marynary · 09/11/2016 12:17

It's not just this thread though, is it? It's the general left wing position internationally.

It really isn't just the "left" wing have a negative opinion on Trump and those who voted for him, you know.

LittleLionMansMummy · 09/11/2016 12:17

Just as long as you're alright A7 Hmm

MaudlinNamechange · 09/11/2016 12:19

"the pound has plummeted and the company i work for have never had it so good!"

sure, a weak pound is going to be to some people's advantage. That isn't the point (you will see that I made that point separately to the damage to my particular industry). the point is that "nothing happened" isn't true - even before Brexit actually happens there are indicators that there are economic effects as the world knows that this is a huge change to how Britain operates, with the legal platforms that support its dealings with the world will be taken away, and replaced with - who knows?

VestalVirgin · 09/11/2016 12:19

Wasn't Hitler democratically elected ?

More or less. I recall that there was something fishy with him seizing the power in the end.

But he did have a lot of support by people who were too stupid to realize that he meant what he said. Who thought that he was just being a populist by threatening genocide to the Jews.

I think that's exactly how it is going to be with Trump. He will do all the horrible things he said he would do, and then some.

And afterwards, people who voted for him will whine and claim that they didn't think he would really do that.

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 09/11/2016 12:19

I've just discovered my extremely successful husband has had 'inappropriate relations' with a 23 year old member of staff, possibly involving a cigar. He may lose his job over this, and some (very unreasonable) people feel he exploited his position of power. However, I think I should both defend him and remain married to him as it may boost my own career (in a field similar to politics, but not politics - don't want to out myself).

Would it be okay if I paint myself as some sort of feminist figure while accepting/denying my husband's infidelity and abuse of his role? AIBU?
