"it wasn't the Hispanics or even the women who won this for Trump. It was white men."
Wealthy white men.
Not the disenfranchised, the privileged who want to keep their privilege at the expense of the rest of us.

Obama: On his second day In office, he issued an executive order, directing that Guantánamo Bay be shut down within a year. It wasn't, but the directive makes clear what sort of issues were forefront in his mind, he tried damn hard to close Bush's torture camp, and admits that failure is one of his biggest regrets. The first thing he did, was make a directive to the military to draw up plans for the withdrawal of troops from Iraq. In his first 100 days, he made a lot of decisions. He tried to be balanced, reasonable and one would assume often made choices he disagreed with on a personal level, for the "greater good". He seems to be genuinely good natured. His wife is fabulous, intelligent, strong and compassionate but doesn't seem like she would take any shit. Don't think the Americans appreciate the Obamas nearly enough. I wish them happy lives.

Trump: Thank God the Obama lawyers have tied up Guantánamo in litigation. I dread to think what Trumps first 100 days in office will bring. I haven't been watching any of his campaign speeches, but I guess wouldn't be a bad idea to now. Wtf has he promised to do.

Apparently Putin has sent him a personal congratulations message, the first head of state to do so. What if they click? Not sure if that would be good or bad.

I hope Sanders runs again in the next election.

savedbythebell · 09/11/2016 10:11

Putins congratulated him and said he hopes relations will now improve.

"I'm a liberal and I support individual freedom until someone who doesn't have a college degree, doesn't have a white collar job and who doesn't live in a thriving metropolitan city has the temerity to disagree with me".
Two words
Democracy. Reagan.
And I expect to be flamed and yet I still respect the flamers' right to do so.
Have a lovely day everyone! 🇺🇸

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 09/11/2016 10:12

Leanback no we wouldn't - just look at the guy running the Philippines.

BlackNo1 · 09/11/2016 10:14

Has May congratulated him? Seriously? What the actual fuck?

Yes, regardless of what she thinks of him she has to suck it up. They are world leaders after all and she has to work with him.
I would have liked to have been in the room with Clinton before and after her phone call. The things that would have been said...
It's basically children playing nice for the sake of a few phone calls.

raisedbyguineapigs · 09/11/2016 10:14

Johnny Agree. its the case here. My parents came from an immigrant very Catholic background. My Ddad is very well travelled and rejected the Church and would not have voted Trump, but my Dmum is anti immigrant and anti abortion. She is immersed in Catholicism of a similar bent to the South American Catholicism. They are very, very conservative as a whole.

areyoubeingserviced · 09/11/2016 10:15

Great post Wicked- I wish the Obamas the best. I am just glad that he will leave office in one piece tbh.
I agree that the Americsns really don't know what they had with the Obamas

raisedbyguineapigs · 09/11/2016 10:16

Reagan, for all his faults was governor of California. He had some political experience. He had done some public service. Trump has done nothing apart from help himself

FlyingElbows · 09/11/2016 10:16

I pray for the day when the ever so intellectually superior "sisterhood" gets its vagina gazing head around the fact that calling women with differing life circumstances and opinions things like "thick hillbillies" does nothing but alienate them further. America is full of women living a very different life to nice British middle class liberal champagne socialist feminists. To expect those women to vote for Hillary Clinton purely because she has a fanny is ridiculous and naiive!

Marynary · 09/11/2016 10:17

You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. If you answer concerns about immigration by screaming at people that they are thick racists that is not going to make them vote for you.

I don't think that the US politicians have called anybody a "thick racist" . Whether or not anyone on this thread has said it is fairly irrelevant considering that we are not politicians and the majority of people (on this thread) don't live in the US.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 09/11/2016 10:17

I didn't think it would happen but not sure why people are so shocked

Again it shows that those who were ruling were not in touch with a huge amount of their electorate and they share the responsibility of this. We didn't think Scotland would nearly vote for independence, we didn't think brexit would happen and we didn't think Trump would win well the question that needs to be asked is why not why were politicians so arrogant to think it simply wouldn't happen and why are so many voters taking huge risks for change

I will not demonise Trump voters (some of my family in the states have voted for Trump, immigrants that have lived the American dream) I don't understand their views and it's caused huge arguments and falling out to life long friendships but it's a reflection on American society and that is really sad

Hillingdon · 09/11/2016 10:18

There are a lot of sore losers here. Just because you lost doesn't mean that the vote was wrong.

Mumsnet is largely left wing liberals and anyone showing a different view is chased off a thread. Well, not this time. Hilary was awful, they made a big mistake choosing her. Is there no other families other than the Bush's and Clinton's to pick from.

Maybe if they had chose Michelle it might have been different but they didn't. They chose her and LOST.

The polls have got it wrong again. In my view that is because the lefties wont hear a word against their views or even listen to anyone else. Well, once again they have been proved wrong

There are a lot of sore losers here. Just because you lost doesn't mean that the vote was wrong.

You do realise that the vast majority of people on this thread don't actually live in the US and haven't "lost" any vote. People are entitled to have a view on those that voted for Trump.

Elendon · 09/11/2016 10:22

Sweet baby Jesus Corbyn's statement is even worse. Fuck off Corbyn to the SWP.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 09/11/2016 10:22

Shocked and stunned Sad

DD also very upset, DS slightly more phlegmatic (?) as is his way.

Feels like referendum morning all over again.

How did this happen?

Where did he find all those people to put a cross in his box?
How did he ever get the nomination in the first place?

Shows how many unhappy and desperate people there are is all I can conclude.

But how could they overlook all his hate, or even side with it?

Depressing Sad

I can only hope he will not be as bad in office as we all fear.
That's not much hope to keep me going, but it's all we've got.

IBelieveTheEarthIsFlat · 09/11/2016 10:22

Noooo Mary you are not entitled to have an opinion apparently. if you do, you are 'hysterical'

Dulra · 09/11/2016 10:24

I am utterly depressed at this result. I am also very scared for America and the rest of the world. Trump nowith has control of the senate Congress and the supreme Court this is a toxic mix. I get that people are disillusioned are being left behind etc etc but trump will do nothing to help that. It is your heads he stood on as he rose to the top. Anyone that can openly mock disabled people is not fit to be President of anywhere no matter what your economic circumstances are. I feel genuinely sorry and scared for black, Muslims lgbt and any other minorities waking up in America this morning. His election to presidency has validated hate

Soubriquet · 09/11/2016 10:26

I don't know if this is true or not but apparently 11,000 people voted for Harambe Hmm

A dead gorilla

Is there any wonder trump won when you've got people voting like that

Hillingdon · 09/11/2016 10:26

Of course I recognise that the majority of people on this thread are not based in the US. However the comments around people not knowing what they were doing, thick, racist etc. Very similar to Brexit and the last General Election

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 09/11/2016 10:27

Well the Ku Klux Klan are delighted with the result.

So that's nice.......

GinAndTunic · 09/11/2016 10:27

Noooo Mary you are not entitled to have an opinion apparently. if you do, you are 'hysterical'

Biscuit
IBelieveTheEarthIsFlat · 09/11/2016 10:28

Fuck off Hillingdon. People can be upset if they want and they don't need you policing them

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 09/11/2016 10:28

I fear for women's reproductive rights in this ultra Republican America.
