Of course May has congratulated him - that's proper international diplomacy.

He'll probably grab her by the pussy.

raisedbyguineapigs · 09/11/2016 09:58

Littlelion That is a very telling poll. The point still stands about white women. And the Black and Hispanic vote was not strong enough in key states like Florida.

Thefishewife · 09/11/2016 09:58

Finally a rasict we can't vote for lol

Actually it might be good for the middle classes to get a bit of a kick up the ass they go on about helping Hispanics and blacks but the reailty is they do nothing

Often talk about how awsome immergation is wile moving to a mostly white area

birdy a role model is someone you can relate to and aspire to be ... (If I had DSs I wouldn't want Trump as their role model...but then he isn't being hailed as the 'first male president')
If she had won she would be a role model - but she has her martial history... that's what you have to do to and put up with to become a successful female world leader...
And all those things in Slate are things that Trump has said - not things he has actually done...
Like I said in office he will be reined in and (I hope) he doesn't do a full term ...but I don't think he will do as much damage to the world as Clinton would have.
(Blair winning in the 2005 election sent out a clear message that the UK people endorsed his actions in Iraq...even though we know that isn't the case that isn't the message people in some other parts of the world got - this is a bit like that)
I will say again lesser of two evils ...and very close which is worse. (And how the hell did the US get stuck with the choice they did...)

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 09/11/2016 10:00

Maybe he'll choke on a pretzel...

dolores. Completely agree with your comment re: the BBC - in fact, your entire post can also be applied to Corbyn. Media bias at its best.

savedbythebell · 09/11/2016 10:01

I don't agree that they'd never have voted a woman in. She was immensely disliked, if it had been Michelle Obama he wouldn't have stood a chance. Margaret Thatcher was voted in 4 times.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 09/11/2016 10:02

I just don't think lots of Brits understand the way American electoral demographics work.

They see Trump slamming abortion and illegal immigrants and they think - 'Oh, he's lost the woman vote and the Latino vote.'

Well, no.

Lots and LOTS of US women are anti-abortion. I don't think people over here realise how much of a hot-ticket issue that is. And lots are pro-gun. Such women will dismiss the allegations of assault as smears, the same way liberals dismissed the Clinton email saga as a smear.

And as for 'immigrants' - I grew up in NY and speak Spanish. Many of my friends, my classmates, and my first boyfriend were all from Central and South American backgrounds. Almost to a man, they were right-wing, God-fearing, abortion-hating, and (frankly) often quite sexist. And definitely homophobic! I remember the scorn they used to pour on 'mariposas' ('fags' or 'queers').

Places like Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador - they are not liberal matriarchal bastions of civil rights. It is not a big surprise that many second and third gen immigrants voted Trump, or at least didn't vote Clinton.

Whoops that was a Freudian autocorrect - Marital not Martial Smile

shovetheholly · 09/11/2016 10:03

I wonder what will happen to NATO now.

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 09/11/2016 10:03

saved. Completely agree. It was not the fact that she is a woman, it is a fact of the woman she is.

QueenLizIII · 09/11/2016 10:04

Has May congratulated him? Seriously? What the actual fuck?

She kind of has to. he was democratically elected, Not as if he is Robert Mugabe.

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 09/11/2016 10:05

pike Grin. I think it's called 'international relations'....

BillSykesDog · 09/11/2016 10:06

I agree with other posters that the 'thick racists' trope is part of the problem.

The left needs to look at why it can't win anything at the moment. It's largely become a movement of rich liberals which barely even pays lip service to the poor workers it was set up to represent. The only social classes with a majority for Brexit were the rich ABs. All they seem to have to offer is benefits, and most people prefer a life of opportunity where they can get something under their own steam.

You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. If you answer concerns about immigration by screaming at people that they are thick racists that is not going to make them vote for you. If you address those concerns by telling them that you will build more affordable housing with priority for long term residents, protect wages and improve working conditions they just might.

But at the moment the things the left wing have to offer the poor are laughable. In the referendum there was constant bewailing of the loss of workers 'rights'. But saying that to people on zero hours or short term contracts or on enforced self employment that they have rights and they'd laugh in your face. People knew what they meant was 'rich people like me have these rights. Vote to keep the rights of the wealthy even though you will never benefit from them - vote to look after me'

Leanback · 09/11/2016 10:06

QueenLiz let's not forget that Hitler was also 'democratically elected' - on 37% of the vote.

This.

I am deeply left-wing and liberal in my political views but there is an obvious problem when the poor, forgotten bits of the country are using the vote to scream out against the status quo - and that comes as a big surprise to Labour and the Democrats i.e. the people who were set up to support the little guy.

LittleLionMansMummy · 09/11/2016 10:10

That's better QueenLiz Wink
