my daughter wants a new wardrobe...50 mile ikea drive???!!

my daughter (14) has been trying to persuade me for months and months for me to buy her a brand new wardrobe as hers is "too small" "doesn't go with her room" or whatever and I completely understand why she'd want one. at first, I was reluctant but offered £45 towards a second hand one if she could find anything half decent,but she now wants a brand new one from ikea that is over £100. she has saved up the other money for it herself (she has a job) and i don't know if i'm being mean or not when i told her that I won't drive fifty plus miles all the way to ikea for a brand new wardrobe in the middle of the year. it isn't her birthday, it isn't christmas, it's a big long excursion for one very expensive item she just happens to want. am i being unreasonable??? pls help!!!

They deliver and I think if at 14 she's managed to save up money she's actually earnt for it she clearly wants it.

i think shes done really well to save up the rest of the money at her age, i would take her.

Delivery is another £35 usually. I'd just take her, she must really want it to put more than £60 of her own hard earned money towards it at 14!

Im probably alone here but I still like going to ikea with my mum for a wander round and a bit of lunch, its a nice day out!

What rule says you can't have a new wardrobe in the middle of the year? A wardrobe isn't a birthday or a Christmas present if she needs one and she's saved up half. It's 50 miles, not 50,000,000. They deliver if you don't want to do the hour or so drive.

what i meant by "the middle of the year" is that it isn't any special occasion it's just a random expensive non-birthday/christmas item

I would probably take her (in exchange for a slice of Ikea's daim cake) on the basis that she's saved up a decent amount of money for it herself from working and would want to reward that. But I am a softie (and blooming love ikea!)

How tight is money? I can't imagine expecting my DC to have a wardrobe for a birthday/Christmas present.

135 quid for a wardrobe is really reasonable. Will it go in your car?

A wardrobe would make a pretty poor Christmas present for a 14yr old, almost as bad as DH buying me Carpet cleaner

She has saved I think you just have to make the time to do it for her, don't go back on your word

Make a bit of a day of it. I may be biased because I love Ikea, but I think you are being a bit mean when she's saved up half the money

YABU she's saved the money herself at the age of 14. She's done her bit, 50 miles is hardly the end of the earth, time for you to do your bit.

She saved up, wants to spend time on a 'road trip' with you and sounds very sensible and nice. One of the best times to talk to children about anything that's worrying them or is difficult is in the car.

I would bite her hand off and if DD wants to do this at 14, I will be very happy.

50 miles!!! I used to drive that to work every day.

I wouldn't let my DD have an Ikea wardrobe if she had paid for all of it and we live ten miles from one! - all those pieces and stupid bloody instructions with no words just pictures.

I am also biased though having had several crappy pieces of kid's bedroom furniture over the years my Ikea days are over.

Why does Christmas/birthday matter if she's saved it. She sounds lovely. You sound like a right grump!
