my daughter wants a new wardrobe...50 mile ikea drive???!!

my daughter (14) has been trying to persuade me for months and months for me to buy her a brand new wardrobe as hers is "too small" "doesn't go with her room" or whatever and I completely understand why she'd want one. at first, I was reluctant but offered £45 towards a second hand one if she could find anything half decent, but she now wants a brand new one from ikea that is over £100. she has saved up the other money for it herself (she has a job) and i don't know if i'm being mean or not when i told her that I won't drive fifty plus miles all the way to ikea for a brand new wardrobe in the middle of the year. it isn't her birthday, it isn't christmas, it's a big long excursion for one very expensive item she just happens to want. am i being unreasonable??? pls help!!!

50 miles?

500 even.

spanieleyes · 16/08/2016 19:55

crikey if it's too much trouble for you, I'll come and pick your daughter up and take her to IKEA myself!

Ye gads. A proper bunfight. A real, genuine bunfight. How dare you all end it by being so nice. I don't think I've ever seen such reasonable behaviour on mn.

bloomburger · 16/08/2016 20:06

Let's have a whip round and buy the poor little soul a wardrobe. I'll pay for the delivery.

NatalieRushman · 16/08/2016 20:07

Oh, not you though op. I still think you're being u

Gardenbirds123 · 16/08/2016 20:11

She sounds amazing lucky lucky you!

Fairybelt · 16/08/2016 20:13

I had a day out to ikea recently (40miles away). We stopped at a town nearby, did some shopping then went ikea were I bought tea lights and plant pots, had a look at some chest of drawers I am thinking of buying but when I do I'll have them delivered for £35 (£200+ for delivery?! Really?) and then we went to a shopping centre for tea and a bit more shopping. I had a really lovely day, maybe you and your daughter could do something similar?

RunnyRattata · 16/08/2016 21:05

Gumtree?
Ebay with the search distance set to suit you?
You really shouldn't have had her save up for it if you had no intention of letting her actually get one. That's extremely unkind.

The rest of you ought to be fucking ashamed of yourselves.Grin

Summerholsdoingmyheadin · 16/08/2016 21:08

Pay for the wardrobe myself

That would sort it for the OP. wink

I would gladly pay for OPs daughters wardrobe if she is happy to take my son and teach him some of the saving ethic that her daughter has. It won't be an easy task though as he will be repeatedly drawn towards spending his cash on music, DVDs and video games. He would happily have zero furniture if it meant having to part fund it himself (not that I would expect him to do so). And the very idea of him receiving a wardrobe for his birthday or Christmas present would have him sulking for years.

Pardonwhat · 16/08/2016 21:08

50 miles is absolutely no distance! YABU

KenAdams · 16/08/2016 21:25

Firstly, you can buy loads of IKEA stuff really cheap second hand so try eBay first.

If you can't find it, just take her to get it. It's admirable that's she's saved up the money herself. If you don't want to make a special trip down there, tie it in with a day out in the nearest city or something.

KenAdams · 16/08/2016 21:25

Oh and loads of IKEA wardrobes come with drawers at the bottom so the back pieces and doors are shorter meaning they are easier to get into cars.

PurpleThursday · 16/08/2016 21:32

I think you are being mean OP and I am proud of your daughter. Please reward her behaviour appropriately and bung in some meatballs at the same time.

Elfieselfie · 16/08/2016 22:27

Yes you are being very unreasonable. It is also unreasonable that they changed the name of Dime bars to Daim. Bastards.
(Still taste good though!)

TeaRexit · 16/08/2016 22:38

Tesco direct deliver free & Argos is 4 quid I think. Might save a lot of heartache.

greathat · 16/08/2016 22:41

Let her have her wardrobe! I like IKEA wardrobes. Will it fit in your car first?

BikeGeek · 16/08/2016 22:51

Someone upthread mentioned they lived between Southampton, Milton Keynes and Bristol Ikea - did you know there's one in Reading now?

FasterThanASnakeAndAMongoose · 16/08/2016 22:56

Unless money is really tight then I think you're being mean. I would drive her there, buy her lunch and pay for the damn wardrobe! She needs it - it's hardly an optional, luxury item.

racheel1973 · 16/08/2016 23:00

Just to let everyone know, I am taking my daughter to Ikea tomorrow

Just5minswithDacre · 16/08/2016 23:19

Yay!!! Good call OP Grin

DesolateWaist · 16/08/2016 23:50

hmm at posters saying you must drive an hour and half away because a 14 year old is insisting

How does a trip of 50 mile take an hour and a half?

Glad you are taking her now op.
Have you checked it will fit in your car though?

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/08/2016 02:33

Good result. Flowers

Anonymouses · 17/08/2016 02:42

What Mrs TP says. Suck it up, take her and be proud of her for saving so much towards something that usually a parent would just buy for their child.

MrsDrSpencerReid · 17/08/2016 03:03

My mum and dad drove me an hour and a half to IKEA last week and I'm 34 Grin (Dad has a ute to cart all our purchases home, lol)
I bought the Kura bunk for DS and they even offered to go halves with me. We made a day of it, kids went to the play area while we shopped, then we all had meatballs and cake.

Meanwhile DH was at home with his feet up enjoying the peace and quite Grin

Glad you're taking her OP Smile

kmc1111 · 17/08/2016 03:28

50 miles is hardly a big long excursion, but why exactly would that be such a problem anyway? It's a chance to have a nice day out with your daughter. Or if that's so awful, it only has to take 2-2.5 hours if you just go straight to the picking area and get the wardrobe. You could be done with it and home in a morning.

Also, a wardrobe isn't really something I'd be making a 14yr old pay for, nor is 100 quid some kind of unusually expensive option like you're making out.
