my daughter wants a new wardrobe...50 mile ikea drive???!!

my daughter (14) has been trying to persuade me for months and months for me to buy her a brand new wardrobe as hers is "too small" "doesn't go with her room" or whatever and I completely understand why she'd want one. at first, I was reluctant but offered £45 towards a second hand one if she could find anything half decent, but she now wants a brand new one from ikea that is over £100. she has saved up the other money for it herself (she has a job) and i don't know if i'm being mean or not when i told her that I won't drive fifty plus miles all the way to ikea for a brand new wardrobe in the middle of the year. it isn't her birthday, it isn't christmas, it's a big long excursion for one very expensive item she just happens to want. am i being unreasonable??? pls help!!!

To be honest, I actually feel for her. You sound like a right meenie.

I think its incredibly shitty to make a 14 year old buy their own furniture tbh. Yes it is wonderful that she has saved it and she sounds great but ffs she has a lifetime to spend her money on furniture.

You say that you understand why she wants a new wardrobe...so buy it for her, and you know, be a parent.

i'm wondering if this is a wind-up - she's saved up and you still won't do it because of the petrol money? Definitely think mean and unreasonable unless you can't afford the petrol or the delivery charge.

I'm a bit worried I should postpone tiling the kitchen till Christmas now. I didn't know boring stuff was also seasonal.

I'm laughing at this OP IT WON'T FIT IN YOUR CAR!!! :) Even flat packed. It is likely to be 6ft high and you will have back and front panels, plus side panels. It will weigh a ton. How will you lift it into your car even if you have space?

Do you honestly think that a wardrobe will fit into the average car? Even if you had a 4x 4 you'd need the passenger seats down at the front. Measure the wardrobe first then measure the space in your boot with the back seats down. I don't think a single wardrobe would fit.

I think you need to assess if her wardrobe is suitable for her now, or if she wants something 'on a whim'. I'd never have expected my DCs to have to buy their own furniture unless what they had was perfectly suitable but they wanted to change it as if it was a fashion item.

I am 40 miles from IKEA.. I'd rather pay £30 for delivery than trek 90 miles almost round trip and struggle with getting something in the car- when it won't fit anyway.

I think you lot are being fucking horrible to the OP.

My daughter got a three door wardrobe for her birthday because that's what she wanted.

A wardrobe is not a necessity. My son doesn't have one at the moment becasue I can't afford one.

God you sound extremely mean.

Reminds me of the time my mother told me if I wanted a pair of trainers that weren't £9.99 from shoezone, I'd have to save up for them myself. And then, when I did, she refused to take me to buy them because paying more than £9.99 was a waste of money Hmm She's a very petty, jealous woman who hates to see anyone happy.

Why aren't you rewarding her for being so responsible at 14 years old? I would be.

Last time I did it we folded down the passenger seat as well as the back seat.
I drove and DH sat on the unfolded back seat.
I have a regular size car. Laugh it up. I guessing the OP knows what car she has better than you do.

A wardrobe is not a christmas/birthday present. YABU.

take her! You must also buy a £2 plant, some lightbulbs and a spatula whilst you are there...its the law

How safe would this have been if you had been involved in a car crash on the motorway or main A road (most IKEA trips will involve a drive on one due to their location).

Why would it not be safe Red?
Both people sat in proper seats belted in and the wardrobe was secured.

Pretty safe. The big items will either move forward or back, so not towards the driver or passenger.
They can't slide sideways, particularly if you take basic precautions, including fastening the seat belt around them.

People also tend not to drive too fast when carrying these items.

Course it does!
Straight down the middle between the two front seats with a bit hanging out of the back. Bungee the boot as shut as possible.

Also you can put the front passenger seat as far forward as possible, put the back seats down and lay flat diagonally.

I got shit loads of pax wardrobes home like that in a polo!

I can get a tall pax in my VW Polo.

I think it's really mean not to take her. She's saved up the money for it, which is really commendable, so she obviously really wants it.

50 miles is nothing, it's how far DH drives to work each day.

We delivered a tall fridge freezer to DS2's student house in a VW Golf a couple of weeks ago, so it depends on the car as to wether a wardrobe will fit in.

Hang on. Have I missed a post on the thread? You promised her £45 or so to buy a second hand wardrobe without mentioning birthday or Christmas. Why does it suddenly have to be birthday or Christmas now that she has saved up the rest to buy a new one?

people seem confused, basically when I said I'd give her £45 for one I meant a second hand one that we'd only have to travel 10 minutes or so to collect in our area. 50 miles is a long way for something she doesn't even need. the wardrobe she has is perfectly fine, it fits all her clothes perfectly although she tells me it's "small".

2 aneboda wardrobes fitted in my corsa - back seat split front seat folded down. Dd sat behind me.

My daughter is slightly younger but needed new wardrobes this year in fact new bedroom furniture as she had her stuff since a baby and at nearly 13 needed more grown up stuff. IKEA stuff is that cheap I wouldn't have dreamt of expecting her to pay towards it! It's also a night day out and that's rare at this age - they all want to do stuff with friends not mum!
