my daughter wants a new wardrobe...50 mile ikea drive???!!

my daughter (14) has been trying to persuade me for months and months for me to buy her a brand new wardrobe as hers is "too small" "doesn't go with her room" or whatever and I completely understand why she'd want one. at first, I was reluctant but offered £45 towards a second hand one if she could find anything half decent,but she now wants a brand new one from ikea that is over £100. she has saved up the other money for it herself (she has a job) and i don't know if i'm being mean or not when i told her that I won't drive fifty plus miles all the way to ikea for a brand new wardrobe in the middle of the year. it isn't her birthday, it isn't christmas, it's a big long excursion for one very expensive item she just happens to want. am i being unreasonable??? pls help!!!

50 miles is hardly a big long excursion, but why exactly would that be such a problem anyway? It's a chance to have a nice day out with your daughter. Or if that's so awful, it only has to take 2-2.5 hours if you just go straight to the picking area and get the wardrobe. You could be done with it and home in a morning.

Also, a wardrobe isn't really something I'd be making a 14yr old pay for, nor is 100 quid some kind of unusually expensive option like you're making out.

Oh and loads of IKEA wardrobes come with drawers at the bottom so the back pieces and doors are shorter meaning they are easier to get into cars.

Firstly, you can buy loads of IKEA stuff really cheap second hand so try eBay first.

If you can't find it, just take her to get it. It's admirable that's she's saved up the money herself. If you don't want to make a special trip down there, tie it in with a day out in the nearest city or something.

I would gladly pay for OPs daughters wardrobe if she is happy to take my son and teach him some of the saving ethic that her daughter has. It won't be an easy task though as he will be repeatedly drawn towards spending his cash on music, DVDs and video games. He would happily have zero furniture if it meant having to part fund it himself (not that I would expect him to do so). And the very idea of him receiving a wardrobe for his birthday or Christmas present would have him sulking for years.

I had a day out to ikea recently (40miles away). We stopped at a town nearby, did some shopping then went ikea were I bought tea lights and plant pots, had a look at some chest of drawers I am thinking of buying but when I do I'll have them delivered for £35 (£200+ for delivery?! Really?) and then we went to a shopping centre for tea and a bit more shopping. I had a really lovely day, maybe you and your daughter could do something similar?
