Driving with children after a pint

I was away with my friend at her DBro/SIL's for the weekend in England. We came in friends car and I have a broken foot so can't currently drive. my friends 2Dcs were also with us.

We all 4 adults and 2 DDs were due to go to a sports event yesterday however the SIL was unwell with bad morning sickness so couldn't make it. Friends DBro wanted to take the kids and asked my friend to stay with SIL. I was to go with the DDs to help with going to the toilet etc.

When we got there friends DBro went to the refreshments bit and bought drinks including a pint of beer for himself. I wasnt happy with this as Friends and I are from Scotland where drinking and driving is very socially unacceptable and even 1 pint would put you over the limit.

Before he started drinking I quietly said I wasn't comfortable with him drinking and driving the DCs. He got very annoyed with me and took a large drink and pretty much downed the pint in one.

I called my friend and told her and said I would pay for a taxi for me and the kids home after the event finished. The event only lasted an hour.

Friends DBro was angry at me for refusing to let him take the kids home and for me calling my friend. The DCS and me got a taxi home.

My friend had words with her DBro about expecting she would be ok for him to drive the DCs after drinking. After we got home last night friends SIL called me to tell me that I was out of order and was never allowed in her home again. I considered sil as a friend as we went to Uni together. She has told a few others what happened as I have had a few texts saying I should apologise to friends DBro. I dont think I should.

Aibu? Should I apologise?

based mainly on paranoia

No, OP's is an evidence-based opinion, however much you dislike it.

4) for many, the cost-benefit analysis of having one pint, remaining under the limit, and driving the car, works out just fine.

Yes, I'd agree that for many people this is the case, but all that proves is that there are many people with an alcohol problem, or who are just generally selfish and ignorant.

Just because many people make the same foolish choice, doesn't make the choice any less foolish.

pearlman JFGI

Plenty of scholarly articles to choose from if you genuinely want to know...

Good for you that you wish to be better informed on such an important subject - there is a whole internet out there that will help you out with your ignorance Smile

struggles not to draw link between your ignorant opinion and your unwillingness to search for information yourself

JessieMcJessie · 25/07/2016 17:11

Moles: driving after one pint = an alcohol problem, yet you dispute my view that there is some paranoia going around here? 🤔

Lovely strawman there, well done Smile

MolesBreathless · 25/07/2016 17:14

Look, if your ignorance is such that you genuinely think drinking alcohol before driving with children in the car is a good idea, then there really is no point engaging with you.

Gothgirl78 · 25/07/2016 17:16

Drinking one pint won't affect a Man's ability to drive safely . if here's evidence to the contrary then I'll apologise and not have a glass of wine with my pub lunch ever again.

I don't care what random doctors and police officers think

So you don't care what professionals with more knowledge and experience than you have, think?
That says a lot.
Perhaps OP does care what they think and perhaps she cares more about the children in that situation than the man did...or more than what you consider her responsibility.

I've never drunk alcohol before driving. Never will. There can be nothing gained by it. If you can't go out for an evening without an alcoholic drink and still manage to enjoy yourself, there's a definite problem. I wouldn't let my DCs in a car with anyone who'd been drinking, either.

DH and I have an absolute no-drink-driving rule. It mint be paranoia, it might not prevent anything terrible happening to our DCs. But it will guarantee that we won't ever make a shitty decision whilst driving that could potentially harm them and spend the rest of our lives wondering if it was the drink that did it.

You owe him no apology. If people want to act like bellends and drink before driving it's their choice. Just as it's yours to protect your DCs from arseholes like the friends DBRO.

There is no safe limit. The only reason it has not been made law is because of the pressure from influential people.
You won't find many if any doctors or police, especially those who deal with the aftermath of an accident who agree there is a safe limit.
If it takes a law before people will agree to stop having a drink and driving it shows how ignorant, selfish and irresponsible people can be.
Before the current limits, people drank a lt more and would drive...and killed people..but that's ok then because the law didn't restrict them?

I don't believe this thread. It is contradictory in places. Reported.

Gottagetmoving · 25/07/2016 17:36

You get a grip Pearlman... Why do you think smoking was never banned? Influenced by the tobacco companies...why are guns still legal in the U.S....pressure from the NRA.

It's not in a lot of people's interests to ban drink driving.
Safety does not come first to people who profit from something.

Gothgirl78 · 25/07/2016 17:37

My sister works for the police. A good friend is a police officer. My husband is a doctor and has worked in a and e. All of them have driven after a pint or equivalent.

It's like paracetamol. One or two will make your headache vanish. A large number will kill you.
