To wonder what the fuck is happening at the moment

Seriously, terror attacks, shootings, stabbing (8, 12, 14 yr old and their mum) in France and that is just the last few days.
I'm starting to wonder about a world that I have bought my daughter into and It's getting worse

Yanbu. I keep asking myself this at the moment. I'm 22 weeks pregnant and worry about the kind of world I'm bringing another child into.

The French attack sounds as more like a dispute between neighbours (when one is known to the police already), as 'Sources close to the investigation told local press that the family had been targeted because of the way they were addressed' (not 'dressed').

The Spalding deaths are also being attributed to domestic motives, not investigated for terrorism.

There does seem to be more violent crime in heat waves. And certainly that's when riots happen most often. Does anyone know if the is has been researched? And if so, if there a correlation and any known/suspected links?

It is very frightening OP. I also worry about my DC's future. I think the violence is going to get worse. There is such hatred and it only seems to be growing :-(

I was thinking this the other day but there's always been unrest. I think you're just more sensitive to it at certain times in your life. I read somewhere that someone's mum had told them to always look for the good. Even in really shitty circumstances someone will always be trying to help or change things for the better.

I've been thinking this too. But then, actually, humans have always been arseholes to each other and there's always some excuse. The Crusades, the 100 Years War, actually England v France throughout the Middle Ages, WWs 1 and 2 - and that's just Northern Europe (ish). It seems to be part of who we are. All we can do is our best and be grateful for all the relative stability and prosperity we enjoy.

Also, the number of people killed or seriously injured in car accidents has plummeted. About four times as many people died on the roads in the UK in 1973 as in 2013.

I find that weird. I can't exert myself to get off the sofa when it's scorching, let alone chase people around whilst wielding a gun/axe/samuri sword.

Statistically you are more likely to drown in your bath than be involved in a terrorist attack.

But would you want to run around when it's bucketing down or snowing? I'm not being flippant, I think there is something about light evenings and warmer weather

It does feel a very dangerous world at the moment. I think the fact we have access to rolling news is part of it, at our fingertips we can find out what's going on in every part of the world. Something happens and within moments it's on twitter, Facebook and sites like this, it's hard to live in blissful ignorance these days.
I spend a lot of time on the internet and read about the terrible events and yet, day to day I feel safe.
Certainly, being pregnant or having young children heightens our fears, I often wonder what kind of world I brought my daughter into, but then, they are our future, I well remember the fear of Nuclear attack, when I was young it felt a near certainty we would all be wiped out, that passed and it felt almost certain everyone would contract Aids, so I spent a lot of my teens fearful of that threat.
I will admit I am reluctant to go anywhere with big crowds right now, I will avoid public celebrations and am concerned about some of the big London summer events, not panicking, just a little concerned.

Yes, ironically this is a safer world than the one I grew up.
The problem now is we are too well informed too fast. The media revels in fear as it sells, some governments revel in fear as it keeps us inactive and dependent. Twitter and Facebook magnify the terror. Too many pictures of blood, corpses and too many "eye witnesses" telling us the same story again and again. The terrorists depend on the media, as their job is to terrify us.
Recently I heard that Gambia and Tanzania have forbidden child marriage below age of 18. (30% of underage girls in Gambia and 37% of underage girls in Tanzania are forcibly married). This is huge news, good news, the kind that should make my day. But it was not a headline.

Apparently accoding to BBC news, it was a muslim man who thought the women were dressed inappropriately! They were on holiday for gods sake in france!
