Seriously, terror attacks, shootings, stabbing (8, 12, 14 yr old and their mum) in France and that is just the last few days.
I'm starting to wonder about a world that I have bought my daughter into and It's getting worse

Free speech means I have the right to say what I want

No it doesn't.

LilacSpunkMonkey · 19/07/2016 16:56

Oh please, Puzzled, you think when people are posting about 'Islam' they mean 'certain people'?

Bollocks.

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 19/07/2016 17:00

This really isn't why is started this thread. This was not started as a mud slinging at Muslims. The shootings I mention in the OP was in reference to the one today outside the pool where a child and mother was shot.
2 teenage girls have just been sentenced for kidnap.
A teacher is on trial for rape.
Children are killing themselves due to bullying
The list is literally endless at the moment

I do, yes - after all people are diverse, and we've already seen that the Quran can be interpreted in a number of ways, some of them admirable and others much less so

It's doubtful I'm the only one who feels that way, so can I look forward to you backing up your comment about what posters are supposed to have said about "all muslims"?

HopeArden · 19/07/2016 17:05

I might be wrong but I don't believe it says anyehere in Catholic doctrine that proests should be allowed to abuse children but it is most definitely the case that islamists in Pakistan are putting forwatd legislation to allow them to hit their wives. Presumably that is allowed in the religion or it isn't.

HopeArden · 19/07/2016 17:06

Free speech does mean I have the right to say what I want so long as I do not advocate or encourage violence against other members of society.

LurkingHusband · 19/07/2016 17:09

Free speech does mean I have the right to say what I want so long as I do not advocate or encourage violence against other members of society.

Not quite the same as

Free speech means I have the right to say what I want is it ?

You may appreciate the difference. Not all do .....

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 19/07/2016 17:09

Puzzled
See below - Is this a broad enough generalisation for you. It covers all men that come from Islamic Countries. I imagine that must draw in hundreds of millions of men into the generalisation.

My DH is from an Islamic Country i.e. a country where 98%+ of the population are Muslim and I don't find his view of women significantly different to British men.

"Throughautomaticdoors Tue 19-Jul-16 16:50:58

Dawndonna it is not the same.
Men from Islamic countries have a different attitude to women. I don't know why people pretend they don't. Of course there are sexist / disrespectful men of all creeds, colours and religions but Islam is a religion that places no value on women at all. Muslims who are educated and westernised are not like this - men from Muslim countries though? Yes there is a different attitude and it is accepted as the norm"

HopeArden · 19/07/2016 17:11

Lurking I did say that my freedom does not extend to physically harming other people.

Throughautomaticdoors · 19/07/2016 17:14

Fair enough I stand corrected.

LurkingHusband · 19/07/2016 17:14

Lurking I did say that my freedom does not extend to physically harming other people.

You did. But you didn't acknowledge limits on your freedom of speech in your PP. Anyway, you get it, so are unlikely to get arrested and then surprised. Crowded theaters and all that ...

Cleo1303 · 19/07/2016 17:15

Dawndonna I truly haven't seen any white men ogling my 12-year-old but even if she got a wolf whistle from a building site that is not the same as the pointing, muttering and glares I've seen from young muslim men in their traditional dress.

LilacSpunkMonkey · 19/07/2016 17:19

Cleo white men are always ogling, wolf-whistling, sexually harassing and indecently assaulting women in this country. You read threads about street harassment on here all the time.

They're the worst ones for it in the UK.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 19/07/2016 17:24

Cleo
A person who wolfwhistles a child is a pervert (hebephile if she is 12).
A person who tries to impose requirements to cover up on a child is a misogynist.

Is one really better than the other?

Throughautomaticdoors · 19/07/2016 17:24

its not a popular view on mn and I will probably be called racist but it is fact. My friend works for a dv charity. A high percentage of the women she helps are Muslim. And her work covers a very mixed area in terms of ethnicity and religion. - she doesn't work in a mainly Muslim region. Why are such a high percentage Muslim? Because the men have a different attitude to the women. I don't see how challenging these views is racist. We all know Christianity hasn't always been great in its treatment of women / gay people but this is now and right now fundamental Islam poses a threat to people's human rights. Note that fundamental Islam. Not all Muslims.

Oh, are we going to do anecdotal data now?

Okay, well all the domestic violence I've ever come across has been perpetrated by white men. And I've known quite a few. And I grew up in an area very heavily populated by Muslims. Lots of domestic violence, mainly by Irish men. Does this mean the Irish are domestic abusers?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 19/07/2016 17:31

ChazsBrilliantAttitude the post you quoted isn't perhaps how I'd have chosen to put it, but at the same time I accept that background, culture - and yes, religion - can have an influence on how people behave. The difference, of course, is that I see no sense in referring to all people from any given group, whether that's religious, racial or something else

Anyway, since men make up only about 50% of the relevant population, how can that possibly be all?

Throughautomaticdoors · 19/07/2016 17:35

Basically religion sucks generally imo.

TulipsInAJug · 19/07/2016 17:41

So why did the man from Morocco, staying in the Alps with his pregnant wife and children, stab three random females (two of them children)?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 19/07/2016 17:42

I think any generalisation that pulls in hundreds of millions of people from many countries is pretty unacceptable. Would it be acceptable to say all blue eyed people think a particular way?

TulipsInAJug · 19/07/2016 17:46

In today's world, violence carried out in the name of religion is pretty well dominated by Islam.

MrsDeVere, yes in America, gay people were killed. By a Muslim.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 19/07/2016 17:46

Tulips
We don't know why but the prosecutor says it wasn't due to their clothing. Lets face it - Morocco is full of tourists (I was there earlier this year) some of whom are wearing shorts and t-shirts. If he wanted to stab scantily dressed females he wouldn't need to leave home to do it.

Cleo1303 · 19/07/2016 18:01

Chazs I didn't say my 12-year-old DD had been wolf-whistled, I said that this would not be as threatening as young muslim men glaring and muttering about her. In fact a wolf-whistle wouldn't worry her at all. She'd just laugh it off.

And, yes a bloke on a building site wolf-whistling an obvious 12-year-old would be acting inappropriately, but a bloke who makes his daughters cover themselves from head to foot as though they should be ashamed of their bodies is a million times worse.

Lilac Have you read the papers over the past two or three years? White men may well be guilty of sexual assault, but it's large organized gangs of muslims who have been targeting white girls in Rotherham, Rochdale, Oxford and all over the place. They give the girls drinks and drugs and then pass them round to be raped repeatedly. But you think white men are worse?
