Seriously, terror attacks, shootings, stabbing (8, 12, 14 yr old and their mum) in France and that is just the last few days.

There are countries which are Islam countries that adopt a much more liberal version of Islam, and those that adopt a very strict version. There are also Muslims who leave countries with very strict versions, because they don't agree with it.
Some people immigrate to Britain from small traditional villages, some from large very diverse urban cities.

mrsD hear, hear. in fact the only time I've had issue with othering is when I grew up in a small town (my DM is Irish). I live somewhere a lot more diverse now and the worst I've got is told off for my ignorance in some matters along and generally an acceptance of my apology for such! Definitely had worse from a groups of men cat calling than anyone muslim looking for my dress except for today when someone realised I was playing pokemon and shouted catch it, catch it

Can be killed in Russia for being gay as well, although I wouldn't really describe Russia as a Christian country. Wouldn't be stoned though.

Practy = one of the more liberal areas is (or was) Lombok, one of the Indonesian islands. I went there in 2001 and we met some locals, who offered their services as tour guides - they were all very relaxed about their observance of Islam. There were a few who were worried because Al Qaeda had been recruiting, and there had been a few tourist kidnappings in previous years (German, iirc), so it wasn't entirely safe - when we hired a car, we were given a map of the island and areas were marked off according to whether they were entirely safe, safe to park and get out, safe to only drive through, or not safe at all. So we saw the good sides and met the liberal people, but the darker side of Islam was there too. And then there were the bombings in Bali, again showing the darker side.
I don't know how much has changed in 15 years but while we were there we didn't see anyone dressed in full Islamic dress, although most women wore headcoverings.
