Is it me or has there been a lot less activity on MN recently?

It could be me...but it seems there's less new threads happening...anyone else noticed this? It's probably been in the past month or maybe two that I've noticed.

OP posts:
Capricorn76 · 10/07/2016 21:59

Lots of people are on the Euro ref topic page.

BolshierAryaStark · 10/07/2016 22:02

I do agree that MN seems to be a bit odd at the moment, lots of PBP making up weird threads, far too many fucking huns Hmm nowhere near enough cunting offs & a sad loss of threads that make cry laughing. Time for one of my MN breaks me thinks...

dingdongdigeridoo · 10/07/2016 22:11

I've typed up two threads in the past month, and then thought twice and deleted them. One was rather juicy, one was a 'tell me about your experiences with this' type thread, and I could see both of them ending up on the DM's shitty homepage.

It looks like many other posters are now completely turned off from posting threads because of where they could end up.

ThomasRichard · 10/07/2016 22:18

Bibbity I don't think it helps if you have a core group of posters who scare off newbies for breaking the unwritten rules of MN but then don't read a lot of the threads because they've seen the same things come up over and over again. Lots more is interesting when you're new just because you haven't discussed those topics before. That loss of interested new members is going to show over time.

Other things that haven't helped:

  • Brexit. Both the nastiness and the overload. I'm not bothering to look at the news much because I'm so bored of it (and I'm an international studies student!). Let's face it, the vote has happened and nothing is going to be sorted out until we have a new PM. Everything at the moment is a rehash of pre-vote speculation.
  • lazy reporters trawling for 'human interest' stories.
  • the number of troll threads.
bibbitybobbityyhat · 10/07/2016 22:25

Yes, I absolutely do agree that the Daily Mail's current obsession with Mumsnet will have had some impact on people posting.

ThomasRichard · 10/07/2016 22:51

Not to mention the Guardian and the Telegraph...

MonkeysWAGMug · 10/07/2016 22:57

"far too many fucking huns Hmm nowhere near enough cunting offs & a sad loss of threads that make cry laughing."

exactly. I think the huns bother me almost as much as the PBP and troll infestations.

I haven't yet taken a clean break but I'm spending far less time here.

WellErrr · 10/07/2016 23:15

Try pulling someone up for hunning though and the whole thread will jump on you.

mynamesnotMa · 10/07/2016 23:16

It feels different lately not...a bit dour. ..Then again the whole country feels as if it's had the arse taken out of itself..All quite depressing.

PterodactylToenails · 10/07/2016 23:21

I hardly ever come on here. 1 I find the site slow because of all the advertisement loading. 2. I find forums a bit out of date now.

AddToBasket · 10/07/2016 23:33

Brexit did it for me. MN was unbearable (FB was pretty bad too). Hysterical, awful, personal criticism of people who took a different view. A lot of anti-democratic sentiment. Horrible circular threads. Metropolitan self-righteousness, as well as racism.

I left for Twitter which was more fun, more jokes and less about a few people drowning out any dissent. Seeing active convos full of Brexit for 3 days solid was grim. You are all lovely, but I'll make my mind up about the economic issues of the day elsewhere Grin.

katemiddletonsnudeheels · 10/07/2016 23:39

You see, I haven't noticed this room and gloom anywhere but here.

Facebook frothed for twenty four hours and then got over it in favour of Love Island. Then everything carried on much as before.

I am up north, though.

WellErrr · 11/07/2016 07:00

Same kate

TheLionSleepsAha · 11/07/2016 07:12

I've pretty much stopped using MN due to:

  1. Anger and vitriol and complete lack of understanding by Remain voters

  2. The trolls

  3. MN has a real left wing champagne socialist vibe (including the moderators) and anyone who voices another opinion will be silenced.

MsKite · 11/07/2016 08:08

It's just...a bit boring here now. Not the same and loads of threads are made up. I suspect some of the made up threads are an inside job tbh.

Javabeansaintgeorge · 11/07/2016 08:55

Lots of people seem to be leaving lately too.

Piemernator · 11/07/2016 09:09

I am a long term user of MN the drop off in poster numbers really happened after the hacking incident in my opinion. There were a number of very prolific posters, maybe a dozen who posted a lot before this.

Gone are the days when slightly contentious or very funny threads would run to a thousand posts.

Scarriff · 11/07/2016 09:17

Agree about the left wing socialist vibe. Not so sure about champagne. But certainly there are a group of regulars who think it is their duty to be agressively rude to and about people who may not share their views. Never seem to get they are talking about their own neighbours. I wont bother to contribute to political threads for that reason.

NickiFury · 11/07/2016 09:17

In my opinion it's the fact that you can't post anything without being jumped on, nit picked at and often actually attacked by a cohort of really very unpleasant posters who seem to revel in the freedom to be absolute twats with impunity. There's always been that element to it but in general they were outnumbered and could be squashed down and the supportive side of MN would always win over. It's not like that anymore, the nastiness and preference to think the worst of people and their motives has properly taken over now. To be honest though I notice this in RL too though, this country isn't a very nice or pleasant place to be right now, people are suspicious and angry in general and people aren't happy, that's bound to be reflected here.

DampSqid · 11/07/2016 09:19

I thought it was because of the trolling. Confused

Th the are a lot of nasty posters about too - bitch plopping should be an Olympic sport Hmm

WellErrr · 11/07/2016 09:20

Completely agree.

There seem to be a few posters who just go around threads looking for things to be offended by/angry about, and use mumsnet as a kind of punching bag to get their rage out.

Noodledoodledoo · 11/07/2016 09:41

Every thread I post on - not many admittedly - I seem to make the thread stop or my comments are ignored or told they are rubbish!

I have I the last few days gone to write a response and thought I can't be bothered.

I made a few comments on Brexit but just sharing what is happening to people I know to be told it's rubbish. Have shared my own experience in pregnancy and got the same. Nothing far fetched just my experience.

People are too quick to shout others down. Am also a teacher so fed up of the teacher bashing threads some of us do try our hardest!

I thought it had got quieter as I have just started Mat leave and I was checking more but obviously not.

Noodledoodledoo · 11/07/2016 09:43

Also the lack of Android app and the fact the mobile site kills my phone battery doesn't help. Also the site over works my ad blocker on my lap top. If I turn off the ad blocker my browser speeds up loads!

bibbitybobbityyhat · 11/07/2016 09:44

But an awful lot of us London-based champagne quaffing lefty socialists have more or less abandoned Mumsnet too.

Laiste · 11/07/2016 10:07

You see, I haven't noticed this room and gloom anywhere but here.

This. Honestly the only times i've felt depressed or uneasy about The Future is after spending more than half an hour on MN Hmm All this sobbing and gun to the head stuff about Brexit. And yes, the utter tripe about The Uneducated and The Old voting the wrong way because they just can't be trusted to understand. I've needed to come out of here and see everyone getting on with life sometimes to get a bit of perspective!

you can't post anything without being jumped on, nit picked at and often actually attacked

This too, but less than the first point. You do find so many neautral kind of threads ruined by nitpicking and repetition of the same, usually bitchy comments. The ''yawn''ing that goes on and the 'bored of this' comments. Bugger off if you've read it before!

MN is what it is. For me, i like the seasonal quality to it: wedding threads from April through summer, the holiday threads, the back to school threads, the xmas is coming threads, easter, fed up with winter, then back to weddings and the kids breaking up.

I enjoy the fact that i have learned loads over the years about other peoples struggles in life, how to look differently at the world, not to believe the main steam hype and so much of how i used to think has changed now. I'm less biggoted and dogmatic than i was before.

So i'll be staying to see how it all pans out Grin
