Is it me or has there been a lot less activity on MN recently?

It could be me...but it seems there's less new threads happening...anyone else noticed this? It's probably been in the past month or maybe two that I've noticed.

I do think Brexit has had a lot to do with it. Mumsnet has a large London based user group. It's been a mess for a lot of people of sorting alternate passports if possible, taking financial advice and trying to figure out if/when jobs will be moved overseas. It's not a time for a lot of people when there is interest in the lighter side of things.

Dapplegrey2 · 10/07/2016 09:49

"Well, loads of us have been slagged off to our faces for daring to use our democratic right to support leaving the EU."
This.
Also I was depressed to read a thread in which some posters said that the less intelligent or well educated shouldn't have a vote.

or those that are "too old" or too "Working class"... it's been very depressing.

Dapplegrey2 · 10/07/2016 09:52

Sorry, that should read 'the less intelligent or less educated'.

Surferjet · 10/07/2016 09:52

The referendum threads have highlighted just what a lot of MN users really think of the working classes. They hate them.
That's put people off I'm sure.

VioletBam · 10/07/2016 09:53

Yes...I've found some of those threads quite awful. And other things DO seem trite it's true. I've been looking over the usual moans and petty gripes and thinking "Oh for goodness sake!"

MrsJamin · 10/07/2016 09:55

I don't want to know anything more about the awful effects of brexit, I just want escapism, and so I've been avoiding mn due to all the brexit threads. I think the nation as a whole is depressed by it.

NeedACleverNN · 10/07/2016 09:56

It was very quiet last night apart from the controversial threads where most people were just waiting for response from MNHQ

bibbitybobbityyhat · 10/07/2016 10:56

I think it doesn't bode well that one of the Discussions of the Day is about deodorant marks on clothing. Another current dotd was actually started on Monday, ie. 6 days ago!

Eigg · 10/07/2016 10:59

There are loads of Scittish and Irish posters on MN. Scottish and Irish schools have been in holiday since the end of June so everyone's away.

katemiddletonsnudeheels · 10/07/2016 11:11

It's probably a combination of all the above, but the levels of abuse some people are prepared to throw at those who voted differently to them is shocking. I don't want to post somewhere I am repeatedly called a thick bigot, to be honest.

BikeRunSki · 10/07/2016 11:23

Activity always goes down on the summer when people go on holiday.

Janeymoo50 · 10/07/2016 11:35

It's because everyone is on a holiday arranged/paid for by unreasonable Mother in Laws 😊

ThomasRichard · 10/07/2016 17:47

I think it can be quite intimidating for a new poster who doesn't know the MN etiquette and gets flamed for saying something that's very mainstream in real life but beyond the pale here e.g. chav, dealing with feelings of gender disappointment, kisses, text talk etc.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 10/07/2016 17:51

But do you think that's the reason for the general dip in activity on the site ThomasRichard?

Mumsnet has been around for about 15 years (I think) and posters have always wanted to preserve the feel for the place, to acknowledge the difference between Mumsnet and other more hunnyish parenting sites!

I'm not sure what to think any more Confused

Sparklingbrook · 10/07/2016 17:55

I cant be bothered much anymore. Snarky people, BREXIT, trolls and the fun police mainly.

I hide thread after thread with a Hmm face.

Surferjet · 10/07/2016 18:02

Brexit has changed the place yes, but it's become transgender obsessed too.
The world is a completely different place to what it was just 5 years ago, so MN is bound to change too.

Janeymoo50 · 10/07/2016 18:21

And god help anyone who thinks it's "unusual" for 4 year olds to be in nappies (unless of course SN). MN is like life on mars, a different world to reality.

MangoMoon · 10/07/2016 18:37

Brexit has made a massive change to the site. Posters that used to appear quite open minded have suddenly turned into proper nasty pieces of work.
Even the thread about supporting Wales, which started as goady but quickly turned quite nice got shit on from a height with a flurry of:
'Well I refuse to be nice about a country that has dragged us out if the EU'
Then descended into 'the English are all colonial cunts' (paraphrased).

Oh, and also this (from PP):
^The referendum threads have highlighted just what a lot of MN users really think of the working classes. They hate them.
That's put people off I'm sure.^

milkmilklemonade12 · 10/07/2016 18:37

wordgetsaround is correct actually. The Brexit has meant a lot of posters have been shouted down for voicing their opinions.

Also, every time I log on, it goes to the mobile site which is totally shit. I have to go to talk, switch to the desktop site, and then sometimes it logs me out again... Nah. I favour Reddit nowadays. Much more varied content. I've got friends who are MNers who haven't been on for ages either. Still keep an eye on MN myself though a few times a month.

milkmilklemonade12 · 10/07/2016 18:42

janeymoo agreed Hmm

If I'm starting an AIBU about an issue, because I'm not an arsehole; clearly I'm not including people with disabilities or additional needs. There's always someone to be offended by whatever someone else says. I've moved onto other forums for a more balanced view recently, which is a shame. MN used to be brilliant about 6 years ago. Completely addictive!

WhyDoesAny1ReadTheDailyFail · 10/07/2016 18:54

Agree about the boorish bigotry about Brexit (on both sides IMHO). I was completely turned off by seeing my words printed in the DM, hence the name change, so now lurk occasionally and almost never post.

Bad times indeed...

MrsMook · 10/07/2016 19:23

I've noticed the pace of new posts coming on the board and the numbers of posts have dropped recently.

I've been around long enough to get a sense of "the old days", but I've been around a few forums in the last 10 years and they do change and evolve and go through busier and quieter cycles, and phases where people bemoan that it's not like the old days.

This is the main board I hang around on, there are a few others, and I like the variation of topics. I've been around long enough that there are many threads that I now read part-way down and move on from because it feels repetitve, but that's me, and that's what happens on forums. What I think is a more real change is a loss of humour and silliness. Quite often after a good bout of procrastinating on here, there's not been anything funny to lift my spirits, and it tends to be quite heavy or bogged down by pedantry or personal disputes. As far as I recall it's always been a place where people don't mince their words, but there seems to be more personal reactions than previously.

Soft play season will soon be upon us though Grin

katemiddletonsnudeheels · 10/07/2016 19:27

phases where people bemoan that it's not like the old days

That's been happening on here since Mumsnet was about six months old! Grin by the same people, too

bibbitybobbityyhat · 10/07/2016 19:34

Think you've summed it up nicely MrsMook.

I am never going to get over the rage I feel after the Referendum so I have avoided all the threads and have stopped myself from getting in to personal arguments.

Everything has changed in the UK since 23rd June and perhaps it follows that Mumsnet will change too.
