Birdsgottafly · 17/06/2016 18:40

""Have we had Ysabel yet?
True.""

It's a valid spelling?

TheCrumpettyTree · 17/06/2016 18:43

I knew an Emmah.

AlfrescoBalconyWanker · 17/06/2016 18:55

I know an Ysabelle but in a class of Isobel A, Isobel B, Isobel C, Isobel D, she has somehow become "Isobel With-a-Y" - with invites addressed to Isobel Withawhy Grin

yanniwoo · 17/06/2016 19:25

I see Esmai OP and bring "Eszmey" to the table.

Same name, just trying to cheat at scrabble there.

ClaudiaApfelstrudel · 17/06/2016 19:30

I have a sister who spells my nephews name Dany

for some reason it makes me shudder everytime I read it so yanbu

Kahuna · 17/06/2016 20:59

I know of a Sofphia--pronounced Sophia........THAT took some explaining....I believe her adoptive parents dropped the "F"....can't think why.

burblish · 17/06/2016 21:06

I used to work with a girl named Sheila, but it was spelt "Shelia". Just daft.

honeylulu · 17/06/2016 21:08

Frazor. His brother was Lotus-Elan.
There was another sibling but my mind has bleached the horror of the name.

Alisvolatpropiis · 17/06/2016 21:20

Ah-liss-ia is the traditional pronunciation though Eternal.

Which is why most Ah-lee-sha's don't spell it that way.

FuckOffJeffrey · 17/06/2016 21:23

When I was a child I knew a boy called Dolphin but was called Finn for short.

EmmaWoodlouse · 17/06/2016 22:01

Alis I was thinking the same about Alicia - I'm sure in my lifetime (though I am relatively old) it was more common to pronounce it Alissia.

I've fairly recently met two (unrelated) Kristians - that may be the norm in some countries for all I know, but both of these were solidly English.

Oh, and back when I was a kid myself - Cathreen. Pronounced Cathryn.

TipBoov · 17/06/2016 23:02

I went to school with a number of Kristians - I thought that spelling was more common.

TaraCarter · 17/06/2016 23:35

I distinctly recall my mother firmly telling me that Alicia (of Malory Towers fame) would be pronounced Ah-liss-eee-ah.

yamam · 18/06/2016 02:01

There's a Cylee-Rhi at my sons nursery Hmm

KoalaDownUnder · 18/06/2016 05:00

'Emmah' is just daft.

ThoraGruntwhistle · 18/06/2016 09:31

I've just seen a Djulie Confused

TrickyD · 18/06/2016 09:36

What on earth is Cylee-Rhi a version of?

All I can see is Celery; surely not?

Aeroflotgirl · 18/06/2016 09:44

I was reading a magazine, where a mother had named her little girl Summah. Aghghgh

ICanSeeForMiles · 18/06/2016 10:32

You know you're getting old when the HT at your dc school is called Kris Grin

LordoftheTits · 18/06/2016 10:41

I distinctly recall my mother firmly telling me that Alicia (of Malory Towers fame) would be pronounced Ah-liss-eee-ah.

I was at primary school in the mid 90's with an Alicia, pronounced Ah-lease-ee-ah. Her sister was Genevieve - their dad was French so maybe that's where the pronounciation comes from?

BeardMinge · 18/06/2016 12:09

I know of an Evylyn, the extra 'y' sets my teeth on edge.

My mum also told me that Alicia in Malory Towers was pronounced ah-liss-ee-ah.

The baby even looks annoyed in the photo

silly name spellings
susurration · 18/06/2016 18:35

Can't see who mentioned it upthread but Lian is a proper name. Chinese I think.

Notthiswankagain · 18/06/2016 19:32

My name is Rebekah. Because my granny was Rebekah. Because it's in the old King James Version of the bible. A translation which began in the 1600s.

I may be slightly irrational about this (have just quit smoking) and it definitely fucks me off that my mum gave me a different spelling to what is expected but I am named after my Gran so what are you going to do.

Accepted spellings are one thing, made up another. Rebecka?! No way...
