I first read about Catherine Withersea in Readers' Digest in about 1982.

piggypoo · 16/06/2016 21:38

My Mum used to have a dog, named Phydeaux! :)

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 16/06/2016 22:10

Piggy, that is the wankiest spelling for a simple name I've ever known lol

NaomiCole · 16/06/2016 22:38

I called my smallest one Mathilda. I was expecting to spell it Matilda as Roald Dahl spelled it but when I was snuggling with my newborn the midwife called from the kitchen - "is that with or without an 'h?" I called back "without" as husband replied "with". When he showed me it was the original Germany spelling we went for the 'h'. I like it :-). Never thought Id have a kid with a wanky name and love it! The oldest is called Harold! (I know - It's awful!!!!) We call him Harry and it just works ;-)

ItsSianNotCyan - I am perplexed by the male equivalent of Sian i.e. Sion. I was always taught that it's pronounced 'shone' but lots of Sions call themselves 'Shorne' i.e. like Sean or Shaun. Please advise!!!

QueenVictoria11 · 16/06/2016 22:53

Don't know about Sion .....

....but I taught a La-v-ca some 10 years ago. Kids in class all corrected me in a resigned tone when I couldn't work to how I was supposed to pronounce it. Seems so obvious now.

AuntJane · 16/06/2016 23:13

Aussie. I believe it's pronounced like Shown but with a shorter vowel sound.

a1poshpaws · 17/06/2016 01:10

Yep, I agree - chav, chav, chav!

KoalaDownUnder · 17/06/2016 02:01

Queen how on earth do you pronounce La-v-ca??

mathanxiety · 17/06/2016 04:11

Siabh/Sive/Siabhb is pronounced Si-v
*Aoibhinn/Aoibheann is pronounced Ay-veen
*Caoimhe is pronounced Ku-wee-va

Sadhbh is the spelling - pronounced to rhyme with 'five'.
Aoibhinn or Aoibheann can also be pronounced with a long E: EE-ven. There should be a difference between the endings of Aoibhinn and Aoibheann: the -inn ending is 'inn' while the -eann ending is 'ann'.
Caoimhe can be pronounced Queev-eh or Keev-eh

BlueStockingUK · 17/06/2016 09:10

Rebekah is THE traditional spelling, hundreds of years old. Rebecca is an updated english version!

LivingInMidnight · 17/06/2016 09:13

Typhane

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 17/06/2016 09:46

^^^Errrrr Tiffany?

shrunkenhead · 17/06/2016 09:49

Ha ha I was reafong it as "Ty Fane" not Tiffany!

shrunkenhead · 17/06/2016 09:50

Reading not reafong..... Now there's a name ..... Rea-Fong

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 17/06/2016 09:52

Shrunken, Ty fane looks more like it than Tiffany does. Typhane looks like a new discovered illness.

LivingInMidnight · 17/06/2016 10:14

Yup it's Tiffany. I read it as ty fane too Confused

Yokohamajojo · 17/06/2016 10:59

Can I just ask where Freyja is a traditional spelling? I thought as in a norse goddess, the traditional spelling is Freja?

glasgowlass · 17/06/2016 11:08

I know a guy in his early 20s called Darn. His son is Darn Jnr on birth certificate. Can't say his name without thinking of mending socks.
