And talking of Irish names Ronan is pronounced Ro -Nan the short form is Ro. Not Ron-an

Sorry that's actually probably obvious. But I'm slightly fed up of seeing a certian celeb being addressed as Ron or Ronny on his Instagram or Twitter. I know it's not likely to be people on here! It's just annoying!

Alisvolatpropiis · 16/06/2016 16:42

Confusing fact Welsh name Ffion is pronounced differently to Irish name Fionn. And is a female name too.

RuggerHug · 16/06/2016 16:42

It is Mama. His granddaughter, named after Rihanna and Bernard BroganGrin

wisba · 16/06/2016 16:44

I know of a little boy called Henrie. I fear parents were thinking they were being clever, I think they couldn't spell.

EmmaWoodlouse · 16/06/2016 16:49

I know someone who called her daughter Nieve...

I'll raise you "Neive" - at least your version looks like the way it's pronounced, I always wanted to say this one as "Knive".

notamummy10 · 16/06/2016 17:10

I can't believe people are arguing over a name.

The Le-ah/Ledasha thing may be an urban myth but it may also be someone's name...

Claire2313 · 16/06/2016 19:17

Quietly confident that I can top those listed so far...
'Le-a' where the '-' (dash) is not silent....
Also 'Teejay'.
Saw something in the news last week about a woman who liked the name Kaitlyn, but decided to change the spelling to Kviiilyn.

Claire2313 · 16/06/2016 19:23

I've heard some corkers recently. Le-a which is bad enough but 100 times worse when you hear that the '-' (dash) is not silent...
Also TeeJay (!!). There was a story in the news last weeka bout a woman who liked the name Kaitlyn but decided to change the spelling to Kviiilyn

DerelictMyBalls · 16/06/2016 19:24

It's a shame no-one has mentioned that little girl called Kviiitlin.

sobby · 16/06/2016 19:25

My friend called her son Leeyam
(Liam) she changes it to Ben when he was four

LadyStarkOfWinterfell · 16/06/2016 19:25

Claire you might want to read the thread
La-a has been discussed ad nauseam and kVIIItlin is probably bollocks too

MumToTiny · 16/06/2016 20:00

Mathew is actually a legitimate variant of Matthew - strange that his parents named him that but bought him personalised clothing with the wrong spelling on though!!

Oliviacolemansshriek · 16/06/2016 20:06

I've met a Tarnia (presumably to stop people pronouncing it Tan-ya) and seen on FB Ocearnia, which isn't a misspelling as such more a hideous mistake.
There's something about adding an r in that makes name a bit, I dont know, grubby or something.

Oliviacolemansshriek · 16/06/2016 20:08

PS haven't RTFT. Skipped 16 pages and ppl still discussing Rebekah. (Yawn)

LoucheLady · 16/06/2016 20:11

All of those have been mentioned already.

Have you cancelled the cheque OP?

mummyhat · 16/06/2016 20:20

Always read these threads with bated breath in case DS2's name gets a
pisstake mention but it never has so far. Problem is DS1's name is pretty common conventional so they'll prob both berate us when olderGrin
One of the reasons for choosing a 'unique' name/spelling was to avoid the barrage of named tat my sister and I endured in childhood.

DrCoconut · 16/06/2016 20:23

Lady stark, your wording krazee reminds me, DS1 went to school with a child of that name and that spelling.

OhGodWhatTheHellNow · 16/06/2016 20:27

I'll take Phteven (it's steven with a ph...) and raise you Catherine Withersea - think about it...
This is actually how a letter to a colleagues wife was addressed many years ago Grin

Claire2313 · 16/06/2016 20:46

Apologies for missing many of the comments, I am new to the forum, and didn't see the next page button (hangs head in shame). Anyway thanks for being soooo welcoming to a newcomer. Think I'll go back to sitting quietly in the corner, and just look for advice occasionally.

MaliceKitten · 16/06/2016 20:52

People keep spelling my youngest daughters name wrong. It's Freyja. It's not a weird of chavvy spelling of the name. It's a traditional spelling. But people still look at me weird when I spell it with a j. Hmm

Cantstopeatingchocolate · 16/06/2016 21:08

The Rae I knew was short for Rachael.
SIL called her middle daughter a hyphenated name. Both could be boy or girl names but she spelled both the boys way, cue daughter at 14 wanting to change it to her lovely normal girly middle name.
I like a bit of an unusual name but normal name with weird spelling makes me Angry. And maybe a bit sorry for kid. Although saying that DS almost had a few traditional Scottish names, but we have a REALLY common surname and thought it wouldn't match.

NapQueen · 16/06/2016 21:09

Probably because the most common spelling is Freya and they look at you weird because they wonder why you've picked the "with a J" option.

Not for them to need to know why. But it won't stop some people wondering.

NicknameUsed · 16/06/2016 21:21

I raise you a Konner.

Makes it look like the parents can't spell.
