Rebekah is a perfectly acceptable alternative spelling. It's Hebrew.

It is indeed an acceptable spelling, but the Hebrew is Rivka, and originally spelt in a different alphabet (I.e can you let us Jews off the hook for this one, please? Wink)

SarahAnderson · 14/06/2016 23:48

How did she give it to you - she paid for the deed poll change? That's amazing story!

SamWheat · 14/06/2016 23:51

Unique spellings are just daft. Why subject the poor sod child to a lifetime of having to spell out their name?!
No, you're not being all hip and "with it" by being cool with weird spellings.
Stop it.

fatowl · 14/06/2016 23:54

I have an Anjulyne in my Rainbows.
But at least she's the only one. Out of 14 others there are 3 Isabelles, 2 Isabellas, an Ella and an Iziana.

DramaAlpaca · 14/06/2016 23:57

EssentialHummus thanks for the correction & sorry I got it wrong. I did wonder about the Hebrew bit after I'd posted it actually - should've checked first instead of reacting too quickly to someone's daft post!

Atthebottomofthegarden · 14/06/2016 23:57

Owl how confusing! I think you will just have to rename them on enrolment, as if they were Victorian maids... "You will be called Jane, and you will be Lizzie...!"

Woodydog1 · 14/06/2016 23:58

Rebekah dates back to its use in 1611 in the King James version of the old testament. Pretty legit. This post is from someone who was given a beautiful 8 lettered name and reduced it down to an awful 4 letter miss spelled abbreviation for most of the 80's mind you.

mathanxiety · 15/06/2016 00:02

Ryley/Riley/Rylee/Ryleigh is a misspelling no matter what version you choose. As a surname in Ireland the name is usually spelled Reilly.

But Rebekah is a bona fide proper spelling.

nellynoodles · 15/06/2016 00:04

Rhilee. Kaytlin. Robinne. Jorja. Mckayla.

MrsJoeyMaynard · 15/06/2016 00:09

Anjulyne

I'm stuck. What's the pronunciation and conventional spelling for this? I can't work it out Confused

DramaAlpaca · 15/06/2016 00:10

Is it Angeline?

SamWheat · 15/06/2016 00:16

I'd have said Angelina.

dolkapots · 15/06/2016 00:18

Recently on FB a sort of sleb discovered that people were slagging her dd's yoonique name and she was really upset as it hadn't occurred to her that people would find it unusual. I think some people just don't think about the consequences.

Rebekah is the Biblical spelling, it is definitely not yoonique.

Alisvolatpropiis · 15/06/2016 00:19

I didn't know that the Hebrew for Rebecca was Rivka, Guy Richie has a daughter called that. Not exactly proud of myself for knowing that fact Blush

NapQueen · 15/06/2016 00:21

Aaliveigha. I despair.

I also know of an Annee. No need, really, as Annie is perfect.

Cineraria · 15/06/2016 00:22

A dear and dyslexic friend once called me from the registrar's office as he'd left the paper his wife had written their baby's name on at home and wanted to check that the correct spelling of her middle name was Sinthea. Thank goodness he did.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 15/06/2016 00:32

I've seen Rifka too - so you have two spellings to choose from there too Grin

Poor Bryanne - unless the second syllable is supposed to be really stressed?

I've seen Abbiegail and Abbygail before. I suppose it's so there's no confusion over which spelling of Abbie to use, but it seems a bit unnecessary - just tell people!

TrickyD · 15/06/2016 06:00

Is it a matter of wishing to give a child a unique name, or simply an inability to spell? I have always assumed these names were bestowed by illiterate parents.

dinodiva · 15/06/2016 06:04

I know of a Maizey. It makes me think of sweet corn.

ApostrophesMatter · 15/06/2016 06:09

It's awful. I judge the parents and think they are ignorant. And I pity the poor child who will be judged by their bad choice.

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 15/06/2016 06:18

Rebekah is the original way the name was spelled, and perfectly acceptable. It's how it's spelled in the Bible.

DS1 has an unusual but established name. There was a child in the year above him in his very small primary school with the same name (what are the chances?) but spelled incorrectly. Thus meaning thst DS was forever hsving his name spelled incorrectly by teachers and TAs who had learned the incorrect spelling the previous year. Grrrrrr
