I'm being totally U and preparing to be flamed but does anyone else find this guy really annoying?

6 months in Space (yawn) and today running the marathon on a treadmill. Bore off.

OP posts:
Hulababy · 24/04/2016 15:48

He has 551K followers on Twitter, so I'd say that there is probably enough people interested to warrant him doing all this media stuff. There will be many more who aren't on social media who are interested too.

Shockingundercrackers · 24/04/2016 15:49

Yeah, he's not only boring, but also really selfish, going on and on about intergalactic space shit and stuff.

If only there were a way of not seeing it. Like maybe some day a scientist could invent an off button or something? Grin

QueenOfTheHighCs · 24/04/2016 15:51

mumoftwo that's brilliant about your daughter and brought a tear to my eye! I also have a 6 yr old DD who loves Tim.

Namechangingchameleon · 24/04/2016 15:56

Love the assumption that because I find him annoying I must be miserable!

Ok, as I stated in my original post I am being U but I still think he's annoying. As pps have said, it's not really the science that annoys me (why would it?) it's the trying to be some sort of "personality" and popping up at the Brits etc.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 24/04/2016 15:58

Switch him off then.

ParadiseCity · 24/04/2016 16:00

He is inspirational and everything and posts lovely photos and stuff. But I did slightly think wtf, being an astronaut isn't enough you have to do the bloody marathon too and put us all to shame?!

Then they said he is 'only' doing it at 70% of his body weight and I thought oh that's ok then, he's mortal after all, lazy bastard.

Come on Tim give Mumsnet a wave.

grimbletart · 24/04/2016 16:01

just pretend OP and her like minded posters were living in, say, 1492.
Imagine the conversation. "So they say Columbus has landed on this whole new continent. How boring: why on earth did he have to waste his time sailing off in a boat when he could sitting round the table with his friends and sharing a flagon or two of vino. How unsocial of him. Besides, we've enough problems in Italy we need to sort out without hearing about him."

Some people find everything boring, unless it's to do with them of course.

TiggerPiggerPoohBumWee · 24/04/2016 16:01

it's the trying to be some sort of "personality" and popping up at the Brits etc

He IS a personality. And why shouldn't he be? Is there anyone at the Brits that has done anything more interesting than he has?

Essentially you seem to be saying that the sciencey shit is ok (which is not quite what you said earlier but ok) but he should shut up about it and not talk about it? Hmm

MangoBiscuit · 24/04/2016 16:02

We love Tim Peake here too. Both DDs (2 and 6) want to be astronauts now thanks to Tim and all the stuff in the media.

OP, you really made me laugh with the ego trip comment. Grin

autumn500 · 24/04/2016 16:02

I agree with OP,it's not the science aspect it's the popping up all over the place like a celeb.i have less than zero interest in him

TiggerPiggerPoohBumWee · 24/04/2016 16:05

it's the popping up all over the place like a celeb.i have less than zero interest in him

But other people are interested.

This is so depressing. It's ok for people to be famous for having a sex tape or some other shite, but not for being an eminent scientist. Makes me wonder what the fuck is wrong with some people. No wonder society is so dumbed down Sad

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/04/2016 16:05

He's more of a celeb than people like bloody Kim Kardashian and co - would far rather he 'popped up' than some talentless mindless cretin famous for nothing more than having tight clothes and collagen implants, or whatever.

HeresJohnny · 24/04/2016 16:07

But surely the popping up all over the place with various PR stunts is raising greater awareness of space exploration and its significance. If it was limited to very scientific coverage I doubt many people would understand let alone give a shit.

More power to his elbow I say.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 24/04/2016 16:08

Queen Thanks - she is fabulous. She's already facing "girls can't do science" and was told by kids at school that only boys can be astronauts. Yay for Kathleen Rubins! (Especially as she has a similar name to her!)

She's currently doing "contractions" for homework - she has to make sentences out of them. So far we have "I'm in the space station" and "I'd go to space if I could."

I wish your Dd was in her class at school. I'd love her to have a space girl friend!

MistressMerryWeather · 24/04/2016 16:09

Keanu Reeves being put in the same sentence as muff diving has made my day.

YABVU, OP.

Tim's a ledge.

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/04/2016 16:09

What have Kim Kardashian or her fellow sex tapers got to do with anything? I don't think the OP mentioned them as people she does admire.

MistressMerryWeather · 24/04/2016 16:12

I love love to see more of his type of "personality" attending stuff like the Brtis to be honest.

Namechangingchameleon · 24/04/2016 16:15

No, I certainly don't admire KK and the like!

Someone up thread mentioned Brian Cox being annoying to them- I'm going to see him in November, different strokes and all that.im not about to call the pp miserable and accuse of being a KK lover for it!

I did like the herding unicorns and Keanu Reeves muff diving post Grin

Dear God. You know that astronauts run marathons all the time right? Sunita Williams ran the NYC marathon I think. This offers us a real insight into what this does to the human body. Part of this is also to look at long term space exploration and the prolonged effect of space travel on the human body.

The trip was ESA sponsored. He's not a space tourist FGS. The man is a professional astronaut. And it is an incredibly dangerous one at that. Once he lands he can't go up again- he will need three years of training for the next mission. And astronauts have died horrific deaths. Not something you do for an ego or a thrill.

And his popping up everywhere is mostly him being asked to do PR work by the ESA. It is an essential part of their scientific mission. You won't get funding for this stuff unless you can show public 'impact'.

And finally, he's not just sitting in the ISS everyday for 6 months. He's got a long list of things that NASA and the ESA would want him to accomplish in that time. The lack of knowledge about basic science on this post is mind boggling.

BumWad · 24/04/2016 16:19

A great thread for identifying The Stupid. Thanks OP.

Yes!! Plus did somebody really compare him to the Kardashians?! Heard it all now! 😳🙈

Buddahbelly · 24/04/2016 16:22

I also get what you mean Op, It seems that now he's in space he's never off the tv. Wasn't he cooking something the other week with heston whatshisface , the week before that he was on our local news every single night for 2 weeks, showing how they clean the ship he's in, or go to the toilet. It is starting to feel like he's the only person ever been to space the way the media are carrying on.

I think as someone else said it's the fact that you know all his life he's been the top of everything, head boy, prefect, captain of the debate team, so yes, to have him constantly on the tv is a little grating.

Titsalinabumsquash · 24/04/2016 16:22

Tim was born and raised in my village and my boys are in the cub/scout pack he was in. Our Akela was still in charge of the pack then and she's very proud of Tim Smile

diddl · 24/04/2016 16:23

Pop up all the time?

I've not heard a mention since he joined the ISS & then today I heard mention of him running the marathon.

I didn't even realise that he was still in space, I thought that he was back & actually about to run in the LM!

Only seeing this thread has made me realise tha I was mistaken!BlushGrin

Topseyt · 24/04/2016 16:35

There are plenty of people I find annoying and boring, but Tim Peak isn't one of them.

He is a great inspiration to many young people at the moment. Also, what would be the point of him going up there and not communicating about what he is doing? If he did that then there would be little point to the mission. Science is always asking questions and pushing the boundaries. Tim is the first British man to be there properly at the cutting edge. On the frontline. How is that boring?

OP is being stupidly unreasonable, and also boring.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/04/2016 16:38

I referred to KK as a 'celeb' who 'pops up all the time' in a far more irritating manner than Tim P. Frankly, I'd rather have one Tim P 'popping up' than many, many other so-called 'celebs'.
