I'm being totally U and preparing to be flamed but does anyone else find this guy really annoying?

6 months in Space (yawn) and today running the marathon on a treadmill. Bore off.

Nicky333 · 24/04/2016 16:38

Maybe he had a place in the London Marathon last year, deferred it and this was his last chance? Grin

I didn't get why he weighted himself down to 70% of his body weight though. Why not 100%? It would have been more realistic, even on a treadmill.

ShelaghTurner · 24/04/2016 16:39

I have to say that space etc bores me into a coma. But, I am strangely addicted to his updates and think it's all incredible so although I think it's a huge waste and none of our business, at the same time my mind is a bit blown. So YABU

Kewcumber · 24/04/2016 16:43

How very dare someone who isn't a "real celebrity" appear on the Brits.

Mind you, I could if I were being awkward, totally discount the opinion of anyone who actually watches the Brits over the age of 17.

I find this guy popping up everywhere ... are you a jealous fellow astronaut [suspicious emoticon]? I can't imagine how else someone living on the ISS can possibly be "popping up everywhere" in your life.

Is that you Jeff Williams ?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/04/2016 16:44

Bum - read the thread. I most certainly did NOT compare him to the Kardashians!

Glittermud · 24/04/2016 16:44

He is so boring. All these months and he's never shown any interest in me.... Me.....MEEEEEEE.

Check your ego, OP.

Namechangingchameleon · 24/04/2016 16:56

Why should I check my ego or care if he has any interest in me? Confused

OP posts:
specialsubject · 24/04/2016 16:57

it might also be worth adding that going to the ISS takes some balls. The Soyuz has a very good safety record despite its age but there is a real risk. And of course there is real risk throughout the mission, there's no help 250km up.

he has trained for years, studied hard, worked hard and has to be both fit and intelligent. That's worth celebrating.

I wish Tim and all his fellow astronauts a safe mission and a safe return.

Hulababy · 24/04/2016 17:17

I think some of the weight is already there in other forms, the harness just adds the extra - and it will be based on various scientific measurements. It does say on most pages that it brings him to his earth weight equivalent. Just doesn't say entirely how.

Not a bad time for him either: 3 hours 35 minutes 21 seconds
When he did it in London itself in 1999 he did it in 3 hours, 18 minutes and 50 seconds, so only 16 minutes or so out.

Previous marathon runner in space was, as already mentioned, NASA astronaut Sunita Williams in 2007. She ran alongside the Boston Marathon, finishing in 4 hours, 23 minutes and 10 seconds. She also did a "triathlon" up there too.

coldcanary · 24/04/2016 17:31

OP I saw Brian Cox last year doing a talk - I didn't really like him that much beforehand but he converted me to a fan by the time he had finished Smile really interesting and engaging.
YABU about Tim Peake but it's horses for courses isn't it?

SouthDownsSunshine · 24/04/2016 17:39

I think he's amazing, he's really popularised space and science which is brilliant. Helen Sharman was a massive influence to me growing up and I'm glad this generation has someone equally inspirational.

He's got my dd (2!) interested in space and rockets. His photos are awe inspiring.

And money spent on space exploration are well worth it, we get very good return on investment.

AtiaoftheJulii · 24/04/2016 18:01

*How very dare someone who isn't a "real celebrity" appear on the Brits.

Lol, love it - mocking those who watch the Brits (I didn't watch them, just saw it reported in the news), but being on the Brits is a good thing.

It's the PR onslaught I find weird and ott.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 24/04/2016 18:05

Oh ha ha you are being so very unreasonable.

Glad I don't live in your world OP!.

Pettywoman · 24/04/2016 18:13

Tim Peake is one of the few good guys. There are so many twats and arseholes to choose from, why get bothered by him?

LilacSpunkMonkey · 24/04/2016 18:21

That pic of Howard from Big Bang made me laugh out loud* so I'm delighted with this thread.

*No beverages were spat, babies woken or pets made jumpy by my laugh.

parmalilac · 24/04/2016 18:25

I can't believe anyone could find space exploration boring! Tim Peake is doing a lot to engage children/young people in science projects, and I've been following him on Instagram. His photos (and of course the ISS's and other astronauts') photos are a daily treat in my opinion!

YvaineStormhold · 24/04/2016 18:33

I agree with the OP - I was saying as much to DP yesterday.

He's being rammed down our throats as much as 'Keep Calm Carry On' was a few years back. I'm sick of hearing about him.

DP reckons we hear so much about him because he's being sponsored by different companies who want their share of his publicity.

I'm sure he's done very well, yada yada yada...but really. My field of fucks is barren.

Sparklingbrook · 24/04/2016 18:35

He isn't being 'rammed down our throats' at all. Confused I only knew about the marathon thing because of this thread and he's easily avoided.

MarshaBrady · 24/04/2016 18:39

Poor Tim Peake, just doing a marathon in space and getting a hard time.

bakeoffcake · 24/04/2016 18:58

Oh but he is 'ramming it down our throats'
He keeps flying round the world, interrupting our view of the sky. And then he keeps MAKING all the news programmes and newspaper talk about him. He's so boasty and annoying.Hmm Grin

TiggerPiggerPoohBumWee · 24/04/2016 19:00

Really? Where is this constant Tim Peake chatter coming from? Quite bizarre that those of us who are interested haven't noticed it, you'd think we would.

Is this the same people complaining that were whining about Eddie Izzard running 27 marathons in 27 days and daring to make a programme about it?
Un fucking believeable.

PamelaPatriciaYouCanCallMePam · 24/04/2016 19:01

Oooh I never comment (lurker only) but I must admit that space exploration makes me a bit cross. I simply can't understand how we can possibly justify hundreds of millions (billions?) of pounds being spent on it when there are people on the planet we have who are starving? That makes me sound like a massive knobber which is why I don't ask it out loud but, with the anonymity of the Internet, please can somebody explain?

FWIW, I think TP seems like a very nice chap, my question relates to all space travel when we could be feeding people....

TiggerPiggerPoohBumWee · 24/04/2016 19:08

There will always be starving people in the world. And we need to feed out souls and our hearts as well as our stomachs! Bread AND roses, as the saying goes.

Cancelling the space program won't help people who are hungry. It would, however, help to starve us all in a different way. If we all thought like that, we'd still be in the Dark Ages.

Pagwatch · 24/04/2016 19:09
Grin

I don't know if I should admit that he's starting to get on my nerves a bit. I'm going to run the gauntlet of being a self absorbed, low life Kardashian fan, I know.

Perhaps I could post that he gets on my nerves on the 'irrational dislike' thread.
Would that be safe?

I want to love him. I try really hard. But no, gets on my nerves.

Narp · 24/04/2016 19:09

He hasn't been rammed down my throat.

Narp · 24/04/2016 19:10

Another one. Flipping Steven Hawking

Bog off Hawking. That American accent is so grating
