I suppose I feel in my gut that his latest mammoth marathon effort (and every respect to him for achieving it as I was born in same year and couldn't even run for 5 mins) is not 100% about raising money for charity. I do wonder just how much "cor blimey you are just SO AMAZING and compassionate" type of validation any individual needs.

I saw him interviewed and he said if you don't play the celebrity tabloid PR game you have to make publicity for yourself by doing unusual stuff.

I've never been a massive fan, he's alright I guess, until he started telling Scottish people how to vote in the IndyRef. But it is bloody impressive to learn Mandarin (I think he said he was doing, after French, German etc) to do a stand up show in.

He ran 729 miles in 27 days. He was trying to do something to get validation from random strangers surely there would be an easier way of doing it?!

He is using his fame and popular personality to raise awareness and do some good. What he did was also very watchable entertainment so he drew more attention/donations to the cause .

Other people (e.g. non famous philanthropists) may use other skills or connections to benefit good causes.

He did not one ounce of harm and only good intentions IMO.

I suspect loads of people's charitable acts are also to make themselves feel better/validated/loved whatever. There's often some selfishness in altruism. But, really, not sure I care if the end justify the means.
