Gone off Eddie Izzard a bit although it pains me to say it

just that, really. I suppose I feel in my gut that his latest mammoth marathon effort (and every respect to him for achieving it as I was born in same year and couldn't even run for 5 mins) is not 100% about raising money for charity. I do wonder just how much "cor blimey you are just SO AMAZING and compassionate" type of validation any individual needs.

Where's Christopher Hitchins when you need him?

SirChenjin · 22/03/2016 13:11

Dead I think.

BertrandRussell · 22/03/2016 13:15

Dead? Attention seeking bastard........

MitzyLeFrouf · 22/03/2016 13:18

To be a proper attention seeking so and so you have to come back from the dead.

SirChenjin · 22/03/2016 13:38

Come back from the dead and do something pointless for charity

oliviaclottedcream · 22/03/2016 13:52

Izzard was very much a Blairite and approving of his various bloodbaths. I hated him from then on in

Blatherskite · 22/03/2016 13:52

What's the difference between Eddie Izzard running for charity and that annoying bloke in the office who's raising money for running the London marathon? The usual amount charities ask for when giving out "free" places is about 5 grand! People run that event for charities they've never even heard of just to get a place when they fail at the ballot AGAIN.

They're both using their friends/family/work colleagues to raise money while doing something they enjoy.

It's just that Eddie has a much wider reach when asking for donations.

katemiddletonsothermum · 22/03/2016 13:56

Oh Christ, yes Blatherskite don't even get me started on Ricky Gervais.

Oh, hang on - I thought you said the bloke FROM The Office.

Blatherskite · 22/03/2016 13:59

Him too kate :)

WhatDat · 22/03/2016 14:10

about the idea of doing something difficult but ultimately pointless and then getting other people to pay you for it.

They weren't paying him Confused

I've never had a strong opinion on EI, but I have always admired his courage to dress how he likes.

I think he has achieved an amazing thing in doing the 27 marathons. The point of doing 27 was to honour Nelson Mandela.

Go Eddie

JanetOfTheApes · 22/03/2016 14:39

Funniest thing about this is the begrudgers seem to hate the fact that he might get applause or publicity for doing it, when most responses from people on the other threads when it was mentioned was "is he doing that again? I had no idea". It wasn't very well publicised at all!

Are people allowed to raise millions for charity as long as no-one notices or says well done?

WhatDat · 22/03/2016 14:43

I don't think it was well publicised. I heard him on the radio one morning in the early days of him taking on this task.

I admire him for doing it but I wouldn't go and book to see him doing stand up I didn't know he still did stand up

LagunaBubbles · 22/03/2016 16:04

He went off on a jolly

Im sure there are better ways of "going on a jolly" than running 26 miles a day for 27 days in a row.

fascicle · 22/03/2016 16:43

I think your expectations are unrealistic, OP. People invariably do things for more than one reason, and something like this has more than one benefit and more than one beneficiary. I can't see anything wrong with combining personal goals with charitable ones. It also seems perfectly reasonable and human to be proud of completing an amazing challenge, and for other people to comment favourably on an unusual and difficult achievement.

Anniegetyourgun · 22/03/2016 19:37

Re that attention-seeking JC fellow:

backwardpossom · 22/03/2016 19:43

This thread is fucking hilarious.

Good grief.

Anorexia athletica was by far and away the winner...

ElementaryMyDear · 22/03/2016 19:49

I do wonder just how much "cor blimey you are just SO AMAZING and compassionate" type of validation any individual needs

Obviously a whole fucking shedload in the case of the Baby Jesus

I must admit to wondering about the fact that christianity requires people to gather together regularly to suck up to God and go on and on about how fantastic he is.

ElementaryMyDear · 22/03/2016 19:51

He went off on a jolly, did something he fancied doing and was able to get other people to give money to charity in his name

I can think of many jollier things that running 26+ miles a day for 27 days in temperatures above 30 degrees, culminating in running 52 miles in one day. And apparently he has made a large donation anyway.

phlebasconsidered · 22/03/2016 19:57

I think he's fucking fabulous. As a 45 year old who only started running last year, and has only managed a half marathon, what he did just knocks me sideways. And anyone who has ever run in July and got sweaty and uncomfortable has an inkling of what running in South African heat must be like. On top of which, when I ran my measly half marathon, if anyone spoke to me past mile 10 I practically cried. I could not give jaunty updates, or even talk. Unlike Eddie, who chatted, allowed cameras to film him, gave an interesting tour around Mandela's life, and ate on the run. When I stop running, I collapse and eat a lot. When he stopped running, he gave interviews, carried on fundraising, and then ran another sodding marathon the next day. For 26 days. He has ten years on me.

If nothing else, he has inspired people to think about another country. Maybe think about running, even though they're getting on a bit.

I don't care that he might need or crave the publicity. He did more to earn it than some tossy footballer who popped up for five minutes, pulling himself away from his gazillion pound mansion and totty for a bit.

And he did it with nice nails.

Really, people who moan about him. What did YOU do to make the world a nicer place, or put a smile on someones face last week?

bibbitybobbityyhat · 22/03/2016 19:59

phlebas
He didn't only start running last year. Google his 2010 effort.

phlebasconsidered · 22/03/2016 20:00

No, I know, but I did! I'm the 45 year old, he's the 54 year old.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 22/03/2016 20:00

Ah, sorry, you're talking about yourself.

What he's done is amazing. I also like the fact he wears a dress if he feels like it. Are you sure you're not mixing him up with Jamie Oliver?Grin

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 22/03/2016 20:05

see if I was Eddie and could make people laugh (for cash) just by saying AALCATRAZZZ in a funny voice, I'd just stick with that really. None of this gruelling marathons shiz

same for JC. I'd just do that thing with the fish over and over again- not that one, the 'put your nets in again brothers' one. That's so fab.

Wouldn't be after getting into trouble and getting crucified and that
