Gone off Eddie Izzard a bit although it pains me to say it

just that, really. I suppose I feel in my gut that his latest mammoth marathon effort (and every respect to him for achieving it as I was born in same year and couldn't even run for 5 mins) is not 100% about raising money for charity. I do wonder just how much "cor blimey you are just SO AMAZING and compassionate" type of validation any individual needs.

Your gut is wrong. You should get this thread deleted, you've embarrassed yourself.

JanetOfTheApes · 21/03/2016 22:59

Doesn't pain you that much or you wouldn't be so cold hearted on aibu. "Yeah well I know his mother died, so what? And so he's raised countless millions over the years, who cares? I don't LIKE IT!"

lorelei9 · 21/03/2016 23:00

Isn't this the second tine he's done this? And barely any publicity the first time.
I love him as much as usual. Can't see why this current effort could be a bad thing. If his knees are okay with it, I'm okay with it Grin

LanaorAna1 · 21/03/2016 23:00

I think he's an amazing man who's done something fab. Well done Eddie.

DioneTheDiabolist · 21/03/2016 23:00

Eddie Izzard is a man who sets himself seemingly impossible goals. And acheives them by really pushing himself.

I love that he uses that talent and drive to make me laugh and raise money and awareness for charity.

lorelei9 · 21/03/2016 23:01

Is anything 100% about charity, surely we all pick an activity we'd enjoy or find fulfilling?

Gaelforce · 21/03/2016 23:01

Eddie Izzard is a star. I love him to bits.
Love him for just getting on with it and raising huge amounts of money for charity but also for his Engelbert Humperdinck sketch.
Even thinking about it has me in stitchesGrin

bibbitybobbityyhat · 21/03/2016 23:01

No, Harry. I don't feel embarrassed and I don't want the thread deleted, hopefully it won't be.

Criticising a man who had done something incredible, raised a huge sum of money and a massive amount of publicity for a very good cause? Good god!

How do you know he doesn't also donate more ' quietly'?

BananaInPyjama · 21/03/2016 23:03

He is amazing for this feat- and has raised the profile of the charity with this being shared around the world.

I am astonished that people can actually dislike him for doing this- if you don't like his comedy, fair enough (I love him) but don't despise him for doing something so amazing.

Give me EI anyday over Kanye or Kim who waste so space in media columns, being famous for being famous.

lulucappuccino · 21/03/2016 23:03

You should be embarrassed, op.

kipperydippery · 21/03/2016 23:03

He is absolutely fucking brilliant. OP please run 27 marathons in as many days, raise 1.5 million for charity & then come back to us

oh, you can't run for 5 mins ODFOD

I really wish I could work out the biscuit emoticon. I'd have done my first ever.

Chippednailvarnish · 21/03/2016 23:04

I hate Eddie Izzard.

I hate him bringing out a sex tape.
I hate the way he turns up to the opening of an envelope just to get his picture in the press.
I hate how he wears inappropriately tight clothes.
I hate his massive plastic arse.
I hate his reality TV show.
I hate that Muppet he's married to.

He's just a fucking disaster. Hate him.

SpeakNoWords · 21/03/2016 23:04

Hmm. There are so many other people who you could take a pop at? What about Paul MacCartney? All he could be bothered to do was a quick cameo in the Some Mothers Do Ave Em sketch, and he must have millions he could donate quietly! You must despise him if Eddie Izzard irritates you this much.

mumofthemonsters808 · 21/03/2016 23:06

Well he's gone up in my estimation, previously I never particularly liked him or disliked him, but God Almighty, what an achievement, I take my hat off to him. It does not mean I will go and buy tickets to watch him or one of his DVDs, but I must give credit where credit is due, its not box standard what he has achieved. I agree, he probably could have just wrote a cheque for the amount he raised, but this takes away the thrill, the motivation and sense of accomplishment.

Meggymoodle · 21/03/2016 23:06

Going against the flow here but I kind of agree with you OP. I used to love Eddie Izzard wildly. This has not made me love him more. Fair play for the physical achievement but it does seem a little like self agrandisement.

(It has however rekindled my desire to run a marathon- just the one mind you)

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 21/03/2016 23:06

Yeah, meanest thread tonight.

No good deed goes unpunished and all that.

JanetOfTheApes · 21/03/2016 23:07

I don't know if thats a joke, Chipped, but he isn't married, has never done a sex tape, or a reality tv show, and is almost never in the papers at all. Are you thinking of someone else?

IfNotNowThenWhenever · 21/03/2016 23:08

Nah, I can see why you're saying bibbety
What he is done is basically mental, and very extreme. There are people all over the world slogging away, raising money for charities and good causes, but when you run a gazillion marathons to raise money. .I do wonder how much of it is ego, or trying to fill a void, or what. I also wonder if he has a partner, because if my 54 yr old (hypothetical ) husband did that I would actually be pretty pissed off, given the likelihood of him carking it as a result.
It does give me the willies a bit.
I realise that is, apparently, akin to saying that I think more baby seals should be clubbed to death, but so be it.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 21/03/2016 23:08

Appear to be in a minority of one then. I can accept that.

OP posts:
CurlyhairedAssassin · 21/03/2016 23:08

To be honest, I would pay money next year so that he would promise NOT to do something even more gruelling. He's the type of person who will never be satisfied with his achievement and won't know when to stop and will start to do his body some real permanent damage. That would be such a shame. Does he have to end up half killing himself to raise money for charity?

It's just going too far.

Lambrini · 21/03/2016 23:09

Just peeked in at the Eddie Izzard thread, goadfest!

PoorHarryHaddow · 21/03/2016 23:09

You should be embarrassed for these reasons:
Making huge assumptions about someone's personal wealth
Judging someone for what they do with their money, even though you don't know what they do with their money
Judging someone you don't know on the motivations for their actions even though you don't know the motivation for their actions
Pissing all over a huge physical effort that someone has made for charity

I don't know where the chip on your shoulder came from, but don't take it out on hard working people who promote good causes.

IfNotNowThenWhenever · 21/03/2016 23:10

Sex tape ??!

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 21/03/2016 23:10

Chipped is most definitely joking, Janet. Or did I miss something and he actually does have a reality show, sex tape and a plastic arse? Grin
