My girlfriend has her period today, granted she always says the first day is the worst. I've had to hand wash three cushion covers because she bled through them, now she's just sheepishly taken the bedsheet down with blood on it and is basically crawling back up the stairs!
I sound like a typical man but is it normal to be that bad? Genuinely concerned

for some women, me included it is normal. Doctors used to tell me it would improve when I had children. It didn't. So cosset her, it goes a long way.

Yes, it really can be awful. Some women find the pain crippling. And it's worth bearing in mind that it can be very different for different women, so even if you know other women who don't have painful periods, your GF may still well have agonising periods. And it's not to do with pain thresholds or being a wimp - some periods genuinely are more painful than others.

There's the pain and the blood flow, they are separate things.

Slightly strange thread title but you could ask her if she's ever talked to her GP about it.

Period pain can indeed be that bad, unfortunately.

Impossible to generalise, just like everything else related to living things.

How any one person can make a judgement on someone else's pain though, I have no idea. We all have different thresholds with regards to pain.

Similarly with temperatures. If I'm cold, I'm cold. Someone else saying "Oh, it's not even cold!" HTF does anyone know how cold I feel?!?!

Do you mean could it be something more serious? Or do you mean she's putting it on? I think you mean the former but the phrasing sounds a bit like you don't buy it.

Sadly I think many women have horrific times with their periods (I've been very lucky in that regard) and so yes, it is that bad and therefore not necessarily serious in one sense (ie, no need for medical attention) but very serious in terms of impact on her life.

Why has she sheepishly bringing the bed sheet down? It's nothing to be ashamed of, having heavy bleeding.

Do you think your girlfriend is 'putting it on'? or are you worried that she needs medical help - I cant quite work out from the Op.

If you are genuinely concerned, then speak to her about maybe visiting the GP - there are things that can lower the flow

Just look after her, thats all she needs at the moment

My title wasn't phrased properly, I am worried though as she hasn't seemed as bad before, she's anemic after having our child so I worry about the amount of blood loss, I don't want her to get unwell

When I was on the contraceptive implant my period was almost constant for the three years I was on it. When it did stop it then started again very heavily and with no warning.

So it was on bed clothes, the mattress and once I had to leave work to buy new trousers.

If this level of blood loss seems unusual she should seek medical advice.

Although your title is easy to misconstrue I don't think you are being a twat.

I had period pain in a hotel once that left the staff wanting to call me an ambulance. So yes, for some women it really is that bad. I used to faint regularly with mine.

Does she seem concerned? Is this her first period since having a child?
