aibu to think period pain shouldn't be that bad? [title edited by MNHQ]

My girlfriend has her period today, granted she always says the first day is the worst. I've had to hand wash three cushion covers because she bled through them, now she's just sheepishly taken the bedsheet down with blood on it and is basically crawling back up the stairs!
I sound like a typical man but is it normal to be that bad? Genuinely concerned

OP posts:
Crazypetlady · 21/11/2015 22:29

I have just RTFT again as I missed some bits is she on contraception? I had to go on the pill due to anemia issues from heavy periods.

corlette · 21/11/2015 22:29

If this is unusual for her, she needs to seek medical advice. A miscarriage also occurred to me. However, she's the one who knows her periods and body.

Your poor girlfriend, she sounds like she's in for an awful night. Hope she manages some painfree sleep. In the meantime, don't let her "sheepishly" carry soiled bed linen down. Grab it off her and chuck it in a bucket of Napisan and let it soak overnight. It's no biggie. You can deal with it tomorrow.

UnGoogleable · 21/11/2015 22:29

I think your confusing OP has set people off on the wrong track.

No, periods should neither be that painful or that heavy. It's not normal and she doesn't have to put up with it.

I had years of severe period pains. I felt bad complaining to my doctor because it was 'just period pains'. Eventually I ended up in A&E and found out i had severe endometriosis and a large ovarian cyst.

One male doctor told my DH that the pain I experienced from my cyst was 'like having your testicle twisted - it's basically the same anatomy'. That made DH wince and I realised I'd been putting up with something that would have most people screaming in agony.

I realise my story is slightly different to what your Girlfriend is experiencing - but my point is, she shouldn't put up with it. She should get help.

Sallystyle · 21/11/2015 22:30

FFS his OP quite clearly states that he is genuinely concerned, even if the title is worded poorly.

Battleshiphips2 · 21/11/2015 22:30

For sone women it is normal. As a few others have said are you sure she isn't pregnant. Early miscarriages can cause very heavy blood loss and cramping. Best thing you can do is look after her. If it continues it might be worth getting her to speak to a doctor.
It was pretty obvious from reading your post you were showing concern and not moaning about it. You've just phrased it wrong in your op. I am assuming from reading it you are concerned that it's more than just period pain.

MistressoftheYoniverse · 21/11/2015 22:30

I think it's the title that is giving OP a roasting..Is it that bad OP?.ever bled through anything from your penis?...but I think what you might be expressing is concern right? speak to her and find out if she is ok..I do have heavy periods the first 2/3 days are never cool..leaking, clots...

TheAnswerIsYes · 21/11/2015 22:30

Meant to add that there are prescription drugs available to help lessen heavy periods if heavy periods are an ongoing issue.

honeysucklejasmine · 21/11/2015 22:33

What were her periods like before pregnancy? Significantly different or just a lighter flow?

AlwaysBeYourself · 21/11/2015 22:33

If you have a child together why not just go and ask her if she is ok and if she feels this is normal for her. She will reassure you.

Potatoface2 · 21/11/2015 22:34

if there is any possibility she could be pregnant it could be a misscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy....if she is really in a lot of pain go to A and E to rule it out....ectopic pregnancys (tubal pregnancy) are very serious

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 21/11/2015 22:36

Any chance it is an ectopic? If there is any chance at all, seek medical advice now.

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 21/11/2015 22:36

X post. Agree with the above.

AlwaysBeYourself · 21/11/2015 22:38

Hang on. His partner has told him that it is like this for her and that her first day is always the worse so as far as she is concerned, she is ok surely.

ShebaShimmyShake · 21/11/2015 22:38

Manchild.

sarahquilt · 21/11/2015 22:39

I suffer 5 days of heavy bleeding every month and have done since I was 13. Yes. The pain is that bad. Once I passed out. Do not underestimate period pain. Look after your gf for goodness sake.

JumpandScore · 21/11/2015 22:41

Period Pain makes me pace about like a caged tiger, it really is that bad, but if she's bleeding exceptionally heavily for her and/or in a lot more pain than usual she needs a doctor.

And I knew from your OP exactly what you meant.

mineofuselessinformation · 21/11/2015 22:42

Umm, aside from al the flaming that's going on here, you might like to know that I used to PRAY that I would faint as my period pain was so awful and I couldn't bear it.
Imagine someone has your nuts in a vice. Go from there. HTH.

VashtaNerada · 21/11/2015 22:43

Seriously people, read the OP properly! He's said nothing wrong Angry
Is she frightened, OP, or just you? I would be worried if I bled like that because it's not normal for me, but some people do get it really bad.

TheFormidableMrsC · 21/11/2015 22:44

Sorry, is it just me? Why is everybody being so fucking rude and aggressive towards the OP? How is his a dickhead and knob for asking a question? Jesus....

OP, periods are shit. Some months worse than others. If it becomes unbearable, she is passing lots of tissue, gets a temperature, seek outside help. Other than that, take her wine/tea/whatever, wash the sheets, get her a hot water bottle, some painkillers and give her a cuddle if she wants one. My DD has horrific periods that make her vomit uncontrollably, flood everywhere, nothing wrong, we've had it all checked.

I think you sound like a decent concerned man. Hope she feels better a.m.

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 21/11/2015 22:46

Hang on. His partner has told him that it is like this for her and that her first day is always the worse

Yes. First day is worse for most people. But the implication from his OP is this is worse than her usual worst day. If she is like this every month then a) he wouldn't be surprised b) if she is soaking through every month and crawling up atairs every month then she probably needs to see a gp anyway.

So if it is like that every month - see a gp at her convenience.
If it is unusual then consider seeking medical help now. An ectopic may be unlikely but is better ruled out.

Having now read full thread, I am absolutely horrified at the level of shit comments levelled at OP. What the actual fuck? Yep, agree, crap thread title...but he doesn't have periods does he?

Zucker · 21/11/2015 22:49

FFS at least read the rest of his posts before telling him to fuck off.

I hope she's feeling a bit better at this stage OP. Has she changed her diet at all recently eg. gone low carb or anything like that. Something as simple as that could be throwing her into a state like this.

MistressoftheYoniverse · 21/11/2015 22:50

I have always had bad periods 7 days and first 2/3 days hell-zone..wish I had those TV periods where people roller skate in white shorts or stay out till 5am (also in white shorts) or trampoline in white shorts...

Topseyt · 21/11/2015 22:51

Betrayed, why don't you get that nasty and spiteful post deleted.

I suppose you just read the title and nothing else, but OP has already explained that it was clumsily put and not correct.
