Infuriated by colleague that has sushi, fruit and soft drink every lunchtime

They are all plastic wrapped, with plastic fork for fruit, plastic bottle for soft drink, plastic container for soy sauce. It's like a mountain of plastic every lunchtime. Really pisses me of.

Now they are bringing in that plastic bag law however plastic bags are so thin nowadays and all the main supermarket s decompose in 2-5 years. But all this plastic packaging will not decompose for a long time.

Yes I know some will say its none of my business, but rubbish, wastefulness and landfill are my business IMO.

Rant over!

I'm interested: what do you have for your lunch? Because unless you grow it all at home surely all the constituent parts have also, at some point, been packaged?

That's not to say that there isn't far, far too much plastic packaging in the world. Or in my bit of it at any rate.

Fauchelevent · 18/09/2015 19:03

I thought this was going to be a thread about how they eat so in some ways I'm pleasantly surprised.

OP, i wouldn't say YABU because waste really upsets me and when you see heaps of plastic in the ocean and in dumps across the world it hits home how much damage we're doing. But posting here will not stop your blood pressure rising.

Even when people are aware, they wont stop because our own convenience > a distant issue. You just have to encourage people to make wiser choices like lunchboxes, flasks... Reusable not disposable

apricotdanish · 18/09/2015 19:04

YABU. It really isn't your business. You can do what you can in your life to save the environment but it's not reasonable to judge others for what they choose to have for lunch and how it's packaged!

pigsDOfly · 18/09/2015 19:05

Can't a lot of that packaging be recycled?

Most of my rubbish goes in the recycling bin and that includes all the stuff food is packed in.

Sazzas · 18/09/2015 19:05

Well I had a salad made from stuff in my veg box, so no packaging, drank water and had a plum. My rocket did come in a little biogragdable bag though.

So I probar used 99.999% less packaging and was bio degradable.

Do you have a recycling scheme at your workplace? If not, you could set one up.

wasonthelist · 18/09/2015 19:06

Op you have way too much time on your hands. Packaging and waste are big issues but placing the blame on one person is like when my vegan colleague gave me a lecture about soap when I'd just been to wash my hands so I could make us both a cuppa.

Sazzas · 18/09/2015 19:07

No recycling bins at work take plastic. Apparently it is a bit of a minefield with recycling.

Even if it could all be recycled and we had the facilities in the the UK would have to be transported there and used a lot of energy.

Sometimes I want to shout at him to just eat a banana instead of this fruit salad. He never even uses the fork it comes with. Gets a metal one from the staff room.

Get. A. Life!

There are more important things to get worked up about.

Here have a Biscuit well done...it's my first one OP

ilovesooty · 18/09/2015 19:09

I think you're paying way too much attention to your colleague's food and cutlery.

Butt out and get a hobby.

Fauchelevent · 18/09/2015 19:12

I never understand people who tell others to get a life on these things, I'm sure the OP has bigger issues but this also pisses her off. It perhaps doesn't make me as angry but waste is still a problem. It has to be someones problem iyswim. It may seem petty but I'm glad OP cares and hopefully does something. Plenty on here get het up about far more inconsequential things (like kids sitting down on buses, fussy eaters...)

Slammerkins · 18/09/2015 19:13

You collect it then. Take it to your nearest recycling facility.

OneDay103 · 18/09/2015 19:15

Yabu, this pisses you off? You really need to live out in the real world. Has bugger all to do with you.

OneDay103 · 18/09/2015 19:16

You sound unhinged. Must be a pain to work with you giving people daggers the entire day.

Theycallmemellowjello · 18/09/2015 19:18

Yeah, sorry, YABVU. I completely agree that packaging is a major issue, but ranting at one individual consumer is very U. Write letters to manufacturers, lobby your MP for punitive taxes on packaging, but don't have a go at some poor bloke.

Ineedtimeoff · 18/09/2015 19:19

I kind of agree with you. Luckily we have a strong recycling ethic at my work place. Is this something you could implement?

shouldIapply · 18/09/2015 19:21

How big a company do you work for? We get hassle the whole time at work about reducing reusing recycling from our EHS department. Big chemical company though so lots of pressure to care for the environment.

Do you have a EHS department? Get them to start recycling plastics. The big issue is removing food waste though, we have to wash anything that has had food in it before it goes in the recycling. There are bins in all offices and kitchens though so I think we are pretty good, saves a fortune for the company who don't have to pay for recycled waste but do for ordinary waste.

jorahmormont · 18/09/2015 19:21

Your life must be very simple and uncomplicated if you can get so worked up over this.

Maybe you should tell your colleague how his lunch offends you. Please return to the thread and post his response.

passmethewineplease · 18/09/2015 19:22

YABU

Sazzas · 18/09/2015 19:22

Well obviously I don't shout at him. I vent on an annon forum.

Its just annoying to see how much packaging is wasted each day, my children and my children's children will still have all this plastic packaging littering the earth in their lifetimes while the government barely scrapes the surface with the bag rule that they've been planning for years.

OP, are you vegetarian?

CinderellaRockefeller · 18/09/2015 19:23

I have a boots sushi salad thing, fruit and veg pack, soft drink AND a packet of crisps most days.

And my fruit and veg pack comes with TWO plastic forks.
