Infuriated by colleague that has sushi, fruit and soft drink every lunchtime

They are all plastic wrapped, with plastic fork for fruit, plastic bottle for soft drink, plastic container for soy sauce. It's like a mountain of plastic every lunchtime. Really pisses me of.

Now they are bringing in that plastic bag law however plastic bags are so thin nowadays and all the main supermarket s decompose in 2-5 years. But all this plastic packaging will not decompose for a long time.

Yes I know some will say its none of my business, but rubbish, wastefulness and landfill are my business IMO.

Rant over!

I'm pretty dismayed at the number of people on here telling the OP to get a grip. I think she has a point. So wasteful, so bad for the environment, not exactly a nice legacy for anyone to leave for our children. But apparently she should 'butt out' and 'get a life'. I think it's the posters making this kind of comment that need to take a long hard look at themselves when it comes to priorities.

IsabelleEberhardt · 18/09/2015 21:12

Sorry about the random 'information'!

Sparklingbrook · 18/09/2015 21:17

I have never taken any notice of what anyone else chooses to eat or what it's wrapped in. I am busy eating my own lunch. Confused

MaidOfStars · 18/09/2015 21:26

OP, second time of asking, do you eat meat?

DarthVadersTailor · 18/09/2015 21:29

People moan about packaging - who packages that food? Blame the manufacturer and not the individual, it's whoever made your colleagues food that's to blame here.

Perhaps you should pay closer attention to her opening and subsequent post.

ISBU to care about packaging? No.
ISBU to want to scream at her colleagues for eating stuff that comes with packaging? Yes.

FarFromAnyRoad · 18/09/2015 21:30

OP do you ever take a sawna? That's pretty wasteful isn't it?

Grin
ouryve · 18/09/2015 21:31

You seem to be harbouring an awful lot of anger, OP [headtilt]

dustyhousewithdustypeople · 18/09/2015 21:32

YANBU

My colleague brings 2 disposable plastic cups of water over to the table because she can't be bothered to get up and refil one when she's finished, makes me cross.

WanderingTrolley1 · 18/09/2015 21:37

Yanbu, OP.

I'm surprised you're getting such a bashing on here.

MotherOfFlagons · 18/09/2015 21:39

Really? I'm not.

janethegirl2 · 18/09/2015 21:41

I share an office with a colleague who likes smoked mackerel. The stench is amazing.
I'd love to be with someone who ate sushi as it's much less smelly.
However people need to be able to eat the food they chose without too much whinging!!
Most supermarket foods are packaged within an inch of their lifes, and that is apparently acceptable. But they want to charge the general public for carrier bags to put the over wrapped produce in.......can't they see the irony in that!!

PunkrockerGirl · 18/09/2015 21:41

I don't need to take a long hard look at myself, Namechange, thanks very much. You don't know what any of us do to try and protect our environment, so perhaps try and be a little less sanctimonious.
What I'm interested to know is what the OP is doing for our planet, apart from whinging about her poor colleague.
Does she drive a car, go on foreign holidays, - maybe she doesn't?
But equally, she's making vast assumptions about what her colleague does for the planet based on on what his lunch is packaged in.
As I said before, if she's that bothered she should take the packaging home and put it in her own recycling.

Pipbin · 18/09/2015 21:43

I don't follow how the New Zealand lamb is more environmentally sound than uk lamb.
How do you think the NZ lamb gets from the container ship to you? Via a lorry, just like the uk lamb does, but with added container fuel and the lorry that has driven it from the farm in NZ to the container.

Lizzylou · 18/09/2015 21:49

I love sushi.

I sometimes leave the tap running. But we are spring fed so no biggy.

I think you just need to sort out a plastic recycling bin at work. It shouldn't be a minefield, we manage it at home Confused

claraschu · 18/09/2015 21:52

YANBU; that would make me have to leave the room. It's so senseless and unnecessary and no one is even enjoying it. People don't think about the consequences of their actions.

SacredHeart · 18/09/2015 22:02

Sorry to bust the banana bubble but most are transported in little bubble wrap sleeping bags for protection and maintaining ripeness level. These are thrown away on arrival at store. Just because you can't see waste doesn't mean it's not there.

Also, I think most people do care, they just aren't so sanctimonious about it.

MissFitt68 · 18/09/2015 22:25

jane it's not the supermarkets charging customers for the bags!!! You do understand that, right?

HicDraconis · 18/09/2015 22:52

YANBU to be concerned about the level of packaging and waste on a global scale - we're wrecking the planet with it currently. You only have to look at one click bait link of marine wildlife with their systems full of discarded plastic to realise that.

YABU - and wasting your own energy needlessly - to allow the packaging from a single person's lunch to infuriate you. You'd be better off suggesting that he make his own sushi (it's ridiculously easy) and fruit salad using reusable containers but I suspect he'd laugh at you (plus say he doesn't have time - which he does, even I have time to make sushi).

YAalsoBslightlyU for your careless misuse of apostrophes which irritates me as much as plastic irritates you ;)

I live in an unheated Eco house, grow my own fruit / veg / eggs, bike to work when I'm not on call, eat meat, fly domestic and international long haul, have limited my family size primarily because of overpopulation concerns... We all make differences in our own ways. You could let my air travel make you mad, or agree with the home vege garden (feeds a family of 4 plus loads spare easily for a year). Depends which aspect of my lifestyle you like or object to. Your colleague may eat a plastic mountain's worth of processed food but at the same time may plant 1000 trees a year.

TheHouseOnTheLane · 19/09/2015 06:15

Oh all you people telling OP to get to fuck etc is WHY the earth is covered in shit!

It's why animals are dying in the ocean and on land covered in this crap!

If EVERYONE made an effort shit like this would not happen. Angry But it is FAR easier to say "oh stop moaning!" when anyone speaks out! You can all eat your sandwiches and contribute to the mess we are making.

'Get to fuck' ? Confused

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 19/09/2015 06:59

You've said your anger isn't at a particular individal yet you've started a thread about him and you've said you want to shout at him and tell him to have a banana! Yes your anger is at one individal and that's what your being told to back off and Yabu about. Because you are that's no if your fucking business he cod eat fucking coal mine in open pits and it still wouldn't be your place to comment!

yanba to care and do your piece for the whole issue as a whole and I understand your frustration but singling out this one person is desperately unfair, he's not the only person who eats like this so what are you going to do shout at every one until that do what you tell them?! That would be very very unreasonable. The reality is the retailers aren't going to notice one bloke going yes my colleague is right I won't buy my sushi any more! There's still going to be a demand for convince packaging! How you solve that I don't know, I understand what your saying about recycling miles but your veg box has food miles and recycling at least off sets its self! Your veg box probably doesn't!

Your energy doesn't need to go in to the anger about one colleuge even if you do only rant on an Internet forum it could be channelled In to campaigning for a better solition!

TheHouseOnTheLane · 19/09/2015 07:00

Sparkling yes....someone upthread said it.

TheHouseOnTheLane · 19/09/2015 07:03

Actually, looking back it was "away to fuck" which means the same thing.

Grazia1984 · 19/09/2015 07:03

We mustn't forget that nothing causes as much trouble for the planet as having a baby so if the colleague has no children and the poster does then compare damage by a bit of plastic to damage by yet another child on the planet and the original poster is in the naughty corner, no question.

(I thought the thread was going to be about kosher - whenever I have seen meals on lots of plastic and sealed into plastic at conferences it is always a separate specially delivered kosher meal actually)
