Infuriated by colleague that has sushi, fruit and soft drink every lunchtime

They are all plastic wrapped, with plastic fork for fruit, plastic bottle for soft drink, plastic container for soy sauce. It's like a mountain of plastic every lunchtime. Really pisses me of.

Now they are bringing in that plastic bag law however plastic bags are so thin nowadays and all the main supermarket s decompose in 2-5 years. But all this plastic packaging will not decompose for a long time.

Yes I know some will say its none of my business, but rubbish, wastefulness and landfill are my business IMO.

Rant over!

Give the girl (OP) a fucking medal!

and then maybe she should get a life! Grin

EarlyNewDawn · 18/09/2015 19:24

The problem is, while he doesn't have to buy them, the fault lies with the producers or that meal. They provide the fork, the packaging etc.

There needs to be tighter controls over what manufacturers are allowed to supply. It's not like he can buy the food without the fork etc.

MaidOfStars · 18/09/2015 19:25

Our green and pleasant land will soon be awash with little plastic fishes containing a dribble of soy sauce.

Hell in a handcart.

Theycallmemellowjello · 18/09/2015 19:25

But tbh, if you're not doing anything positive you're not helping the situation much more than him. Put your energy into campaigning for your office to get recycling bins, not into this.

ShelaghTurner · 18/09/2015 19:27

So shout at the manufacturers not the poor sod next to you trying to eat his lunch in peace.

CurlyLocks87 · 18/09/2015 19:27

YABU

Minion · 18/09/2015 19:29

OP do you walk to work? Or cycle?
Do you take holidays? If so, how do you get there?
We all have a carbon footprint. Maybe, just maybe, this is his.

XiCi · 18/09/2015 19:30

I think you seriously need to think about your anxiety levels if you get so worked up about such meaningless shit

derxa · 18/09/2015 19:31

I am the most non-PC in the world but I am saying YADNBU . I hate waste like this. I hate supermarket packaging. We have to do better.

Investmentspaidout · 18/09/2015 19:32

Every time she puts a nori roll in her mouth a polar bear dies.

OneDay103 · 18/09/2015 19:34

Ooh look at me I care soooo much about the environment Biscuit
What do you do to contribute op?

IHaveBrilloHair · 18/09/2015 19:37

I had a packet of cheese and onion walkers crisps today, but no waste because I ate the packet.

Iwanttobeadog · 18/09/2015 19:48

In think your anger is misdirected. You need to be cross with the manufacturer surely. It's not his fault if the food he fancies comes only in plastic

BuggersMuddle · 18/09/2015 19:49

Um, wow. Have you tried buying lunch out recently?

If you have to, or want to, it's pretty hard to avoid packaging. I carry an Onya bag and all of that, but at the end of the day try to choose the best lunch for me on that day.

I assume you take lunch in? It's great if you have the time and energy to do that (and I sometimes do), but won't suit everyone.

Also I hope you are annoyed with the packaging people, not your colleague. I used to travel with work every week and was stuck with basically Pret or Eat for lunch. I thought the packaging was ridiculous, but it was for various reasons the best option at the time.

verystressedmum · 18/09/2015 19:51

It's. It actually his fault there's so much packaging on the food.

member · 18/09/2015 19:55

Maybe you should offer to make his lunch and bring it in for him?

peacefuleasyfeeling · 18/09/2015 19:56

I think OP is getting an unfairly harsh treatment here. Waste is a problem and we could all do with stepping up to reduce our share of it, I'm sure. I'm always astounded on threads like these when a poster is feeling upset about something which they perceive has a negative environmental impact such as waste, frivolous use of fossil fuels or excessive meat-eating to name a few regularly recurring issues, the overwhelming response is usually one along the lines of "Back off, I do it because I can. YABVU." With no reference or concession to the OPs legitimate point. I really dislike the "none of your business" thing; loads of crap stuff, big and small, happens because people are worried about sticking their necks out and bothering about other people's business, even when said business is actually a wider concern.

gamingmum · 18/09/2015 20:01

You get annoyed about the wastage of plastic which is fair but then suggest he just eat a banana...how many air miles do you think have gone into thay banana not to mention all the harmful chemicals put on them to keep them fresh and affordable at about 10p each.

You can't judge another on their wastage because the huge majority of us will take out more than we give back to this earth. All we can do is try.

JawannaDrink · 18/09/2015 20:02

What your colleagues eat for lunch is not a wider issue or something you can make your business.Sanctimonious busybody.

Murfles · 18/09/2015 20:11

OP is your colleague the only person in your workplace whose lunch comes wrapped in plastic? Do you never purchase goods wrapped in plastic? Do your friends or family never buy anything wrapped in plastic? YABVVU

Pipbin · 18/09/2015 20:18

Even if it could all be recycled and we had the facilities in the the UK would have to be transported there and used a lot of energy.

What do you think happens to the plastics that we put in our household recycling bins? It all gets recycled.

I do understand your frustration. Is it worth finding out about recyclable waste collection. I believe it's now cheaper to have commercial recycling bin than it used to be.

violetwellies · 18/09/2015 20:19

YADNBU and all the people who think it's none of your business, bollox, it's all of our business.
Far too much packaging, on everything.

Ineedtimeoff · 18/09/2015 20:21

I think we all have a duty to try and reduce our environmental impact on the plant. I understand that it would be frustrating to see someone have such little regard when you are trying so hard.

I'm disappointed with the responses here. Very sad that environmental issues don't get more support on MN. Sad

Sazzas · 18/09/2015 20:26

Thanks yes I agree something like this is all of our problem!

There is lots of wrong information on this thread. Bananas have zero air miles, they are all by boat and in the grand scheme of things far far far better than some plastic packages fruit salad.

Sazzas · 18/09/2015 20:28

I'm sad too, hardly anyone give a fuck about environmental issues on bere
