Infuriated by colleague that has sushi, fruit and soft drink every lunchtime

They are all plastic wrapped, with plastic fork for fruit, plastic bottle for soft drink, plastic container for soy sauce. It's like a mountain of plastic every lunchtime. Really pisses me of.

Now they are bringing in that plastic bag law however plastic bags are so thin nowadays and all the main supermarket s decompose in 2-5 years. But all this plastic packaging will not decompose for a long time.

Yes I know some will say its none of my business, but rubbish, wastefulness and landfill are my business IMO.

Rant over!

So you live off boated in bananas?Hmm

BikeRunSki · 18/09/2015 20:30

I'd organise a team build trip to a landfill.

ghostyslovesheep · 18/09/2015 20:31

unless those boats use wind power alone they are still polluting

NotMeNotYouNotAnyone · 18/09/2015 20:33

Get a grip. If it bothers you so much then set up plastic recycling at work. But seriously, get a hobby

ArendelleQueen · 18/09/2015 20:33

OMG Grin

LovelyFriend · 18/09/2015 20:36

OP I feel your pain.

My tits start twisting when my colleague runs the tap needlessly, chatting away with all that water going down the drain for no fucking reason at all apart from he has no awareness beyond his own needs. (Otherwise I mostly love him dearly)

Sazzas · 18/09/2015 20:41

I think its very sad that the more effort you go to make the world a better place, the more others have a go at you for not being perfect in every single way.

Sazzas · 18/09/2015 20:43

Yes the tap thing pisses me off. When I'm on the loo and I can hear someone has left the tap running really grates.

I had a friend who wasted so much water, left it on when brushing her teeth on full blast. Her argument was she wasn't on a metre so paid for "unlimited water" so as if it was her right to waste water!

Take the empty packaging home and put it in your own recycling.
Waste some water rinsing it out beforehand though.

BackInTheRealWorld · 18/09/2015 20:47

oh shut up shut up shut up shut UP.

RiverTam · 18/09/2015 20:47

Stuff being shipped in on a container ship isn't that bad because of the sheer number and size of containers that one ship can carry. So the OP isn't wrong in saying that a boated in banana isn't that bad. (this is why imported new Zealand lamb is, or certainly used to be, more environmentally sound than British lamb due to less intensive farming methods and being shipped over on a whopping great container ship containing a squillion other things.)

MN is really depressing about environmental issues. The 5p bag threads have made dismal reading.

MaidOfStars · 18/09/2015 20:49

Sazzas it's not so much the principle of reducing waste that anyone is disagreeing with (how could anyone disagree with that?). It is your irrational anger at a particular colleague who happens to buy a lunch that comes with palstic packaging, as if he is anything other than pawn in the whole game.

It is not his fault that manufacturers package his preferred lunch in plastic. He could reduce waste, so could we all. You do not get a free pass to make a personal attack on him for something that is a wider societal issue.

I don't eat meat. I hope you don't either. Catastrophic for the environment (as we currently farm livestock). I mouth off about UN report this, and water facts that, to any audience that's interested or receptive. I don't shout at colleagues for eating ham.

MissFitt68 · 18/09/2015 20:49

But your colleague may do loads of other environmentally friendly things you don't know about.... Yet here you are, having a go because he's (also) not perfect 'in every single way'......

redredblue · 18/09/2015 20:50

I do agree with you that we throw away too much plastic. But yabu for directing your anger towards him.
Most people are not that environmentally conscious. And it's mainly the fault of the supermarkets for making available all these meals to go. Fruit does not need to be ready chopped up and packaged!
Can you start a recycling scheme at work?

Lilaclily · 18/09/2015 20:52

Ah but he's healthy
So won't drain the Nhs of resources
So your dcs won't have to pay for that

shutupanddance · 18/09/2015 20:53

Biscuit soundshealthy tome

IsabelleEberhardt · 18/09/2015 20:58

I don't understand why people are angry that the op cares about the environment? Yes we all have a carbon footprint, but some have a bigger footprint than others. Surely raising awareness on how we can reduce it is a good thing?

And right, it is the manufacturers who need to change more than the colleague. But op hasn't gone into work and shouted at her colleague, she's venting online.

msgrinch · 18/09/2015 20:59

Get over yourself, yabu, seriously get a grip.

Sazzas · 18/09/2015 21:02

My anger is not at an individual, its that there a millions of people who so the same everyday and the waste it produces that doesn't disappear for several lifetimes.

If people didn't buy it then manufacturer's would not make it. Or the government could do something. The UK is shockingly wasteful compared to most of Europe.

derxa · 18/09/2015 21:05

Lamb is not farmed intensively in Britain. I should know - I'm a sheep farmer.

Libitina · 18/09/2015 21:07

OP have a Biscuit.

IsabelleEberhardt · 18/09/2015 21:07

Why should the op get a grip? People on mumsnet get in a tizz over toilet brushes ffs and they get much more support! What's wrong with caring about the environment? I really don't get it.

MissFitt68 · 18/09/2015 21:07

isabelle but the op will be causing havoc m to the environment herself... Somewhere.... But to be so self righteous about a colleague? We are all as bad. All of us

MissFitt68 · 18/09/2015 21:08

Havoc? No not havoc.... Harm!

IsabelleEberhardt · 18/09/2015 21:11

But it's ridiculous to say we are all just as bad as each other. Of course some of us are more information wasteful than others.

It isn't like the op is attacking the colleague, just venting online about one thing that annoys her but is connected to a much bigger issue.
