Popular but tacky

Sorry, not really an AIBU and inspired by the Pandora thread so breaking a few MN 'rules'. I found it really interesting to see what people view as tacky. Agreed with some and was surprised by others.

My personal pet hates are those baby on board signs in the back window of many cars (wouldn't mention it in real life as one of my best friends has one), rings that say things like 'Mum' on them and streaky blonde highlights in dark hair.

Completely appreciate that we all have and are entitled to different tastes. Just fascinated by the strong but opposing responses that an innocuous item can cause. The things I've just listed are viewed as useful/beautiful by many other people.

Wear your cons with pride Angel
I amSmile

And NO alcohol is ever tacky! How could anyone think otherwise?
6 months pregnant and would kill for a cocktail Sad

Wannabestepfordwife · 20/03/2015 17:32

By MN standards I'm the Queen of Tack- red hair, fake fur, fake tan, animal print, juicy couture lounge wear, LV bags!

Things I find tacky:
Peter Andre
The Kardashians/ anyone who is famous for a sex tape/ who they have slept with
Shabby Chic (or shabby shit)
Cupcakes
Low cut tops on young men showing off their "Heavage" (it makes me heave)
Couples declarations of love on Facebook when they are quite obviously sat next to each other

cococandyfloss · 20/03/2015 17:32

Thomas Sabo is tacky? Oh dear

QueenBean · 20/03/2015 18:13

So we've fallen from "tacky" to "things that I just don't like"

Brighton?! Ok.... Hmm

ScrambledEggAndToast · 20/03/2015 18:19

Hate the "mum" knuckle duster rings and when people wear goodness knows how many necklaces and earrings all at the same time. Hate people wearing onesies out of the house.

LittleMilkNoSugar · 20/03/2015 18:31

...looked at my Converse this morning through narrowed eyes...tried peering at them from different angles...checked my birth certificate...subjected Converse to a Hard Stare...checked birth certificate again...

Nope! Still blooming love 'em Grin

Honeybadger83 · 20/03/2015 18:59

You can have my Converse (or more accurately; Deichman knock-offs) when you prise them from my cold dead feet!

famalam · 20/03/2015 19:06

The80s I don't know, the appeal is lost on me. And it's always against a bright white background that emphasises the naked feet more! Argh

Squoosh I love that site!!

famalam · 20/03/2015 19:11

I've always preferred a silver photo frame.

Notrevealingmyidentity · 20/03/2015 19:13

99.9% of feature walls. I have however seen 2 that were not tacky.

Notrevealingmyidentity · 20/03/2015 19:17

Bad hair extension. You know the ones where it's really obviously fake.

Also as someone said those god awful resort hotels that are devoid of culture and every meal is a buffet.

Hoop earrings. Just no. Unless it's fancy dress.

Those gourmet burger places springing up like triffids.

Notrevealingmyidentity · 20/03/2015 19:21

Oh and - and I realise I am a bitch but any name with -Mae- in it. Vile.

BasinHaircut · 20/03/2015 19:32

I don't think any silver-coloured photo frames are made from actual silver. Just metal, usually with 'best friends' or similar scribed on them. In my eyes they are PROPER tacky.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 20/03/2015 19:37

I guess if lots of us mums are wearing converse they really are over. Grin

squoosh · 20/03/2015 19:38

They may be cliched but I don't think they're tacky. If you had them customised with diamantes spelling 'sexy laydee' that would make them tacky.

TheJiminyConjecture · 20/03/2015 19:39

I love these threads. There's something brilliant about nodding along vigorously to one post and then ticking off all the tacky things I love in the next Grin

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 20/03/2015 19:40

squoosh

How did you know?Angry

kewtogetin · 20/03/2015 19:47

Feature walls! What's that? You love the paper so much you're only going to put it on one wall? Yeah, that makes sense....
Shabby fucking chic. Fuck off with your distressed kitchen table and your Annie fucking Sloan paint, I know, how's about you get an original idea? Because a shabby chic kitchen in a narrates new build is, quite frankly, wank.
Leggings worn as trousers, nobody wants to see your flabby arse, and while we're at it, I can see your labia.
Laminate floors.
Uk caravan holidays. 'The kids lovvvvve haven'!!!!!
Those God awful glitter encrusted bottles of cheap prosecco with matching glasses.

kewtogetin · 20/03/2015 19:48

*barratts

Penquin · 20/03/2015 20:18

The kids do love haven though

Taking dcs there in our touring caravan tomorrow. Campfire, beach and stargazing, with the option of swimming pool and child friendly pub if the weather 's shit. What's not to like?

iLoveFlop · 20/03/2015 20:57

Agree with the horrible twee phrases on walls/cushions.

I once saw one on a cushion that read 'excuse the mess, my children are just making memories'. It made me inordinately angry.

Football shirts with the wearer's nicknamed printed on the back.

Clothes with 'princess' on their clothing.

White background photoshoots.

iLoveFlop · 20/03/2015 21:01

People who write facebook messages to people who don't have/can't read facebook, such as 'happy 2nd birthday Harry! We love you sooo much, love from mummy and daddy', and people who comment on it addressing 'Harry'.

People who share a ridiculous amount of photographs of their baby on facebook. Yes, I get you are proud. But 5 of the same picture, with slighty different facial expressions?

This is quite cathartic.
