Popular but tacky

Sorry, not really an AIBU and inspired by the Pandora thread so breaking a few MN 'rules'. I found it really interesting to see what people view as tacky. Agreed with some and was surprised by others.

My personal pet hates are those baby on board signs in the back window of many cars (wouldn't mention it in real life as one of my best friends has one), rings that say things like 'Mum' on them and streaky blonde highlights in dark hair.

Completely appreciate that we all have and are entitled to different tastes. Just fascinated by the strong but opposing responses that an innocuous item can cause. The things I've just listed are viewed as useful/beautiful by many other people.

I'm not a good one to answer this because I love tacky stuff, I don't know why I just don't see it as a negative. I love trashy pants the best, the netty ones with day glo pink trim yes please, and I wear big hoopy earrings Blush I'd much rather have trashy stuff than twee !

BigRedBall · 20/03/2015 12:39

My last two children's names rhyme Blush. I think people would think that's tacky. Grin

Cliffdiver · 20/03/2015 12:44

Strapless wedding dresses

Headbands on babies with no hair

Jewellery on children

The Bugaboo buggy I saw the other day with the baby's name written on the frame and a personalised pink fluffy hood

Phone cases with pictures on

Openup41 · 20/03/2015 12:57

A few more:

Feature walls - even when they were all the hype. I feel they make rooms appear smaller.

Large photographs on walls

Parents choosing child's name based on the sound rather than the actual meaning

Holiday resorts with zero culture - sun, English pubs/newspapers/cuisine

The Sun/Daily Mail newspapers

Reebok - any style

patienceisvirtuous · 20/03/2015 13:06

I have some fab Sketchers - they're olive green, suede, cowboy-style ankle boots. And mega comfy :)

Noone has mentioned 'Keep Calm' schizz.

Live Laugh Love makes me want to do the exact opposite!

nocabbageinmyeye · 20/03/2015 13:09

Women with their nails done one colour bar one nail on each hand which is painted differently - what age are you 8??
In fact nail art over 13 is a bit tacky in general
Fake flowers are extremely tacky, the fake flowers that spell out a name or title, mother, father, sister, at a funeral, I will never rest in peace if someone puts one of those on my grave!! Those or a domed Jesus statue will have me haunting folk forever!!
Another one who ages with white leggings on anyone other than a child
Tattoos, I have two and I hate them, thankfully I got them places I can hide them but visable tattoos are tack (unless actually you are a tattoo artist or real arty, those kind of people can pull it off and look cool)
Another one for glitter glasses, ew!
Earrings on babies
Headbands on bald babies
Reindeer antlers/eye lashes on cars
BOB signs are bad but not as bad as "Careful Abbie is on board" - oh do fuck off
People who change the name of their kids spelling for no reason other than to make is cooler/more american/different - you are sentencing your child to a lifetime of spelling out their name and people judging their tacky parents.
Anything blingy on a baby - those soothers are super tacky
Those big silvercross style buggies that are coming back - why why why??
Men in any sort of jersey when they are not at or have just been to a match - ew ew ew
Flags, especially hanging your national flag in your window or bringing it on holidays - oh I will judge for a flag on holidays - totally classless

Debinaround · 20/03/2015 13:12

Fucking hell some right miseries on here! Shock

Binkybix · 20/03/2015 13:17

I love puma mostros but they're very hard to get hold of now.

The80sweregreat · 20/03/2015 13:20

Debinaround, yes, I just re- read the list, there are few I agree with( and listed myself) but some I think 'ok, not my thing, but each to their own'..i watched judge rinder,(my guilty pleasure )yesterday, was a woman on there with bright blue lippy, a rainbow scarf, bright yellow dress and mis matched earings. she looked cool though and obviously did not care what anyone thought. I couldn't do this.. ! I do admire the different, but some can pull it off and others just can't. life is weird sometimes.

Sketchers instead of converse? just no.

squoosh · 20/03/2015 13:32

And no again.

AzureDress · 20/03/2015 13:33

I have some lovely Sketchers, they're like a cross between smart trainers and ballet-pumps. One pair is burgandy with subtle gold flower pattern, one pair black with Velcro strap, and my favourite pair is cream with mixed textures including lace. Way more classy, feminine and stylish than Converse. Women over 35 in Converse look like they're wannabe teenagers or going to a rock-festival!

AzureDress · 20/03/2015 13:37

Sketchers also have better arch-support and padding. Converse (like Uggs) are bad design for feet unless flat-footed. IMO wearing Converse in public is equivalent to wearing jogging-pants with HOLLISTER splashed down the side Grin

squoosh · 20/03/2015 13:39

Way more classy, feminine and stylish than Converse.

I'm going to have you disagree with you in the strongest possible way here. The words 'classy' and 'stylish' (!) definitely don't enter my head when I see a pair. Sketchers scream 'frumpsville' to me.

CremeEggThief · 20/03/2015 13:39

You don't see it much any more, but how about people tucking pencils or cigarettes behind their ears? I have always hated that.

BolshierAyraStark · 20/03/2015 13:42

Fake tan & hair extensions.
Small children with ears pierced-truly grim.

Sallystyle · 20/03/2015 13:43

I used to like sketchers but they do not compare to cons.

Cons suit all ages. Just bought myself some blue suede ones

Sallystyle · 20/03/2015 13:44

I had hair extensions a few weeks ago. My hairdresser fucked it up.

Now wearing a half wig Grin

thornyhousewife · 20/03/2015 13:49

Crochet.

Photo shoots.

False eyelashes and eyebrows.

famalam · 20/03/2015 13:56

LOL @ FuckitBucket - "Drinking wine every night"

Sometimes on facebook someone will even just post a picture of a glass of wine one evening and all these women will Like it, sort of makes me cringe a bit.

I'm not into wine. More of a cocktail sort of girl.
