Popular but tacky

Sorry, not really an AIBU and inspired by the Pandora thread so breaking a few MN 'rules'. I found it really interesting to see what people view as tacky. Agreed with some and was surprised by others.

My personal pet hates are those baby on board signs in the back window of many cars (wouldn't mention it in real life as one of my best friends has one), rings that say things like 'Mum' on them and streaky blonde highlights in dark hair.

Completely appreciate that we all have and are entitled to different tastes. Just fascinated by the strong but opposing responses that an innocuous item can cause. The things I've just listed are viewed as useful/beautiful by many other people.

People who write facebook messages to their partner, even though they're probably sitting next to them on the couch.

Honeybadger83 · 20/03/2015 21:14

If we can't have white backgrounds for our photo shoots now, what is acceptable instead?
Surely not those weird dark swirly backgrounds, which make it look as if something is on fire in the distance?

squoosh · 20/03/2015 21:16

You can have a white background. As long as you're not all frolicking around barefoot and in matching denim and white shirts.

MehsMum · 20/03/2015 21:22

I was born in Essix. Surely anything I do is by definition tacky...

KissyBoo · 20/03/2015 21:30

Some people on here really need to unclench.

It's like an aspiring middle class checklist Hmm

FuckItBucket · 20/03/2015 21:49

kissy it's mumsnet. You weren't expected anything different were you? Grin

Cliffdiver · 20/03/2015 21:49

YY squoosh

Babyroobs · 20/03/2015 22:18

I really dilike those 'Pauls Boutique' jackets and bags. Oh and headbands and trainers on tiny babies.

WilburIsSomePig · 20/03/2015 22:55

I hate the whole 'oh its so tacky' thing, it's a bit twattish. BUT I have a load of things I really don't like:

Children with pierced ears
Superdry on middle aged people
Nail art
Glittery glasses
Lots of huge canvas prints on walls
Patio heaters (put a fecking jumper on)
Links of London
Uggs

There are millions of things, I'm a miserable fucker.

NotNob · 20/03/2015 23:01

People who add an xx after a Facebook post/statement or picture for no reason
tattoos
Animal print
4 x 4s

runningforfreedom · 20/03/2015 23:07

iLoveflop You have addressed one of my biggest pet peeves. Harry is two... he does not have Facebook, yes we know you love him, now shut up

lemonade30 · 20/03/2015 23:15

oh yes we all hate those who prioritise having a grand old time of it before giving a flying monkeys arse what others think.

I mean really, how very dare they contravene the arbitrarily imposed rules of tasteful middle England?

The joke's not wholly on the tacky ones now is it ladies (ahem)

thatsn0tmyname · 20/03/2015 23:21

Paul's Boutique stuff. Diamante jogging bottoms.

QueenInTheNorth · 20/03/2015 23:28

Square nails, shabby chic, fake tan, bright red/pink/purple hair (unless, you're 14 and in 'that phase'). Eyebrows that look unnatural, Facebook relationships, and my mother in laws love for 'novel' items (gnomes, frying pan clock, that fish that sings...etc)

Never heard of a cake smash photoshoot, but now I've seen one, it makes me absolutely incandescent for some inexplicable reason.

Cliffdiver · 21/03/2015 23:03

I saw a lady today wearing a Superdry style hoodie, but the writing said:

Mummy
Since 2012

Hmm
3catsandcounting · 21/03/2015 23:19

Tattoos. Any tattoos. No, they're not pretty, beautiful, arty or anything else. Don't kid yourself. They're horrible.

Openup41 · 22/03/2015 00:25

3catsandcounting - I feel this way about tattoos. They are no longer original as every person has one.

Mutley77 · 22/03/2015 00:32

Funny about the converse as I didn't think they were fashionable among young people, haven't they been "mummy fashion" for years....? That's probably tragic in itself but thought I was safe wearing them as I felt that I wasn't trying to keep up with fashion Grin

grumbleina · 22/03/2015 10:15

"Never heard of a cake smash photoshoot, but now I've seen one, it makes me absolutely incandescent for some inexplicable reason."

oooo I can have a crack at explaining this. Pick one or more from the following:

  • Because it is essentially staging a moment that people think is a 'classic' from childhood. Everyone needs a photo of their kid covered in cake, apparently. But what if your kid doesn't ever do that naturally? Best to make sure it happens with a specific, booked in event, and hire a photographer to document it. Ugh.
  • Because it's a fucking waste of good cake.
  • Because it says 'look how carefree I am!' at the same time as it says 'look how controlling I am!' and this clash produces a dissonance that is infuriating.
  • World poverty, while we purchase and destroy food, on purpose, for a 'cute' photo.
Boswollox · 22/03/2015 10:46

Meh, I wear platform Converse and the little dance pump ones, and I'm rather cool and with it Grin

Blueandwhitelover · 22/03/2015 11:38

I'm 50 and just bought my first pair of Converse whilst on my last all inclusive package holiday. (Still reading the thread to see what other terrible things I actually like )

nappyaddict · 22/03/2015 17:34

are the individual natural looking false eyelashes tacky?

what about gel nails that are cut just beyond the fingertips?

what should the over 30s wear as trainers/casual shoes if not baseball pumps? flat ballet pumps are too cold in the winter if you are wearing jeans as you can't wear socks with them.
