Popular but tacky

Sorry, not really an AIBU and inspired by the Pandora thread so breaking a few MN 'rules'. I found it really interesting to see what people view as tacky. Agreed with some and was surprised by others.

My personal pet hates are those baby on board signs in the back window of many cars (wouldn't mention it in real life as one of my best friends has one), rings that say things like 'Mum' on them and streaky blonde highlights in dark hair.

Completely appreciate that we all have and are entitled to different tastes. Just fascinated by the strong but opposing responses that an innocuous item can cause. The things I've just listed are viewed as useful/beautiful by many other people.

Can someone please tell me what I can wear on my feet that are as comfortable as converse for the four miles of walking I do every day getting the kids to and from school?

Is it the brand that is tacky or the type/style of shoe?

I'm 44 and all about comfort so it's Uggs in winter ( the leather water resistant ones) , Converse in spring and Birkenstocks ( I won't give them up ever!) or Saltwater sandles in summer.

The only thing I can think of that I find tacky is people who have a habit of dropping swear words into normal conversation. I hate sitting on a train and hearing someone talking to their friend and every other word is F***g.

Tattoos- especially on middle class people. e.g. I am such a free spirit and I go to India on holiday. Therefore I'll tattoo a bloody butterfly on my foot

Joules clothes on an adult

You do know they are made for adults? Grin

GladysTheGolem · 20/03/2015 09:44

Quinto, you know you spend too much time on MN when phone autocorrects foot to foof.

People who can't be bothered to spellcheck their phones before posting Blush

TwatMcTwonk · 20/03/2015 10:20

I love converse...Grin
I have fake flowers in my hanging baskets...
Ooh and at the moment I do have blonde hair and dark roots can't be arsed to dye them yet
I do find the use of LOL/ ROFL/ LMFAO from anyone older than 16 a bit tacky and rather sad Hmm

derxa · 20/03/2015 10:23

Oh God I'm tacky I just put lol on a post!!!

squoosh · 20/03/2015 10:24

'Short wedding dresses - so so so ugly'

Really disagree that short wedding dresses are tacky. I think it's refreshing to see a bride not wearing a boring standard long strapless wedding dress.

tywinlannister · 20/03/2015 10:24

Cherished numberplates.
Michael Kors items. It's the most designer item you can buy with £100 so everyone goes for it.
Only wearing pink.
Getting stick on sparkles on every item you own. I've seen people selling not just shoes/glasses/phones, but FLANNELS with stick on gems. WTF.
People who think Ripleys Believe it or Not is a cultural museum in London.

I know a woman who posted an ALBUM of her Pandora charms on FB, and they all looked like they had been bought from a man in the pub.

ooooooohh goody, another AIBU judgey pants thread

time to get the popcorn....Smile

ListObsessed · 20/03/2015 10:40

One woman's tacky is another woman's stylish.

Just thought of another one that I just don't understand; the duckface pouty pose. To me it looks ridiculous but many other people clearly think it's sexy as hell.

'Can someone please tell me what I can wear on my feet that are as comfortable as converse'

Angels, I'd recommend Sketchers or Puma Mostro as alternative. Or Valentino if you don't mind the price. Converse is favoured by teenagers and students (think teamed with Superdry, ripped jeans, neon skater-skirts). The shape also reminds me of clown-shoes for some reason- think it's the thin very flat sole and tight ankle with laces. And they look grubby really quickly.

Families with alliterative names, à la the Kardashian's.

Artificial flowers. They're very high-end ones are okay, but they obviously nylon ones, particularly if they have a glitter highlightsConfused

Tattoos with names of loved ones, family members, particularly children. I love tattoos (as of yesterday I now have my own) and I think it's wonderful if you want to memorialise a family member or the birth of the child in some way. But just the names? Seriously? Shows such a lack of imagination.

I'm probably going to catch some stick for that last one...

pinningwobble · 20/03/2015 11:26

Theboatisleaking - they're supposed to look grubby!

Wild horses couldn't drag me away from my converse.

Honestly, just wear whatever you feel comfortable in! You can't please everyone. Personally I hate heels but I couldn't care less if others want to wear them.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 20/03/2015 11:31

Argh the names! Its starting to catch on. I know a family of k's where the boy has been called Konnor to fit the theme Confused

squoosh · 20/03/2015 11:31

Converse have been around so many decades now that they're considered a classic. I certainly don't see a 50 something person wearing them and think 'oh how tacky'. I do think the white or cream ones look most un-studenty though.

Personally I can't wear them as they rip my heels to shreds.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 20/03/2015 11:32

Oh i feel horrible laughing at a baby name. but yuck

squoosh · 20/03/2015 11:33

Skechers are hideously ugly.

QueenBean · 20/03/2015 11:43

Sketchers?! I have now officially seen the worst advice I have ever seen on MN.

RonaldMcDonald · 20/03/2015 11:45

what, pray tell, is a 'bob sign'?

Riri85 · 20/03/2015 11:46

This thread has made me want to wear converse and dress my baby in a headband even more than I already do!Grin

Nabootique · 20/03/2015 11:49

I saw a woman on the train yesterday tapping away on her massively blinged up diamante and pearl phone with her thick, acrylic, french manicured, long, square nails. I had to look away.

Beth2511 · 20/03/2015 11:49

I love my pandora! Whoops!

My daughter has a hyphenated name but it was to honour my terminally ill aunty who died the day after meeting my baby.

Cant stand headbands or BOB signs or pier cings. There's a toddler sibling at DSD school with his ear pierced. Looks horrific

RonaldMcDonald · 20/03/2015 11:51

ah Pandora, I'd forgotten that was a thing

Dear God
