Popular but tacky

Sorry, not really an AIBU and inspired by the Pandora thread so breaking a few MN 'rules'. I found it really interesting to see what people view as tacky. Agreed with some and was surprised by others.

My personal pet hates are those baby on board signs in the back window of many cars (wouldn't mention it in real life as one of my best friends has one), rings that say things like 'Mum' on them and streaky blonde highlights in dark hair.

Completely appreciate that we all have and are entitled to different tastes. Just fascinated by the strong but opposing responses that an innocuous item can cause. The things I've just listed are viewed as useful/beautiful by many other people.

I thought it was just to warn other drivers you had precious cargo? In hope they'd be a bit more tolerant.
I have one, never really thought about it. It came with the Bounty pack or some such and I just stuck it on!
And now I'm common. Bummer.

AngryBeaver · 19/03/2015 09:02

I don't like "character" kids clothing. Dora, Thomas etc. I don't let my kids wear them. Think they look cheap. Everyone knows this so they rarely receive anything like that. If they do I either give them to charity or let them wear them as jarmies (then lose them)

brainfidget · 19/03/2015 09:03

I always thought BOB signs were to make aggressive drivers think twice / maintain more of a stopping distance. Might work for some, and that might be the crucial one.

Costacoffeeplease · 19/03/2015 09:07

Bouquets of roses with crystals or other 'gemstones' stuck in the centre of the flower - vile - are flowers not beautiful enough on their own?

BasinHaircut · 19/03/2015 09:08

Silver photo frames, or any card shop type photo frames.

Acrylic nails, fake eyelashes, anything with the 'designer' name written all over it.

Trebushay · 19/03/2015 09:09

Glasses covered in glitter
Anoraks
Net curtains

CaptainAnkles · 19/03/2015 09:39

If someone is inclined to drive like an aggressive prick, the presence of a baby on board sign in another car isn't going to make them more cautious, and as for being used by emergency services, if that was the reason for the signs then they'd make it the law for everyone with kids to have one.
If anything, it's a weird stealth boast about one's fertility. 'Check me out, and the fruit of my loins.' You might as well hang a phial of spunk from your rear view mirror.

I hate Pandora bracelets and white leggings

BlueBananas · 19/03/2015 09:47

Oh dear seems I'm very common Blush

QueenBean · 19/03/2015 09:51

The use of "d" in front of everything

BasinHaircut · 19/03/2015 09:51

Who on earth wears white leggings?!

WorraLiberty · 19/03/2015 09:54

Yes but even if you're driving alone you'll have precious cargo

derxa · 19/03/2015 09:54

How dare you attack my blonde highlights. And there was I thinking I was Nancy Mitford.

WhereYouLeftIt · 19/03/2015 09:59

Flowers decorated with glitter make me boak. But I do like some artificial flowers.

Orange tans, artificially big eyebrows - obviously popular but very tacky IMO.

Eyelashes on car headlights make me smile - so very Penelope Pitstop in The Wacky Races.

TwinkieTwinkle · 19/03/2015 10:00

Michael Kors bags. Well not all of them. Just the style you seem to see every 17/18 year old girl wearing. Although I suppose they are the new more expensive version of the Miss Selfridge etc bags.

buildmeabuttercup · 19/03/2015 10:04

I'm with trebushay. Glittery glasses and alcohol bottles are so popular my local selling pages, I hate them with an unreasonable passion. Blush

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 19/03/2015 10:04

I hate the BOB signs. If someone is going to drive like a twat, you having a sign on your car will make bollocks all difference to that!

I hate hats being worn indoors. Since when was this acceptable?

White leggings should be burnt on sight!

MsMcWoodle · 19/03/2015 10:04

I like a bit of bad taste. Have fake flowers, gnomes, and my pottery collection is very tacky.
Common as muck, me.

I like my baby on board, I would hope it stops people getting too close to me.

I always keep a nice distance back when I see the cars in front say there is either a baby or a child on board.

Little Prince or Princess ones are mildly irritating though and I think it deters from the point of the signs.

fabuleux · 19/03/2015 10:13

Oh no i love my nail art and patterned tights, and pandora bracelt Blush

yuck to big marker-pen style eyebrows

londonrach · 19/03/2015 10:15

Puds...my dad has eye problems and has to wear a hat and if sun comes through the window he he wears a sunhat indoors. Doctors orders there!!!!!

celineybeanie · 19/03/2015 10:17

Kittymum03 I wear mens boxers made of the t shirt material to stop my chub rub

Yokohamajojo · 19/03/2015 10:18

Very popular for quite a long time but I cannot stand UGG boots or Hunter Wellies!

Boswollox · 19/03/2015 10:23

I love eyelashes on certain cars- volkswagen beetles, fiat 500's and Nissan Figaro's. They look wrong to me on others! Couldn't give a stuff if they are considered tacky I loves em Grin When I learn how to drive and get a car of my own, it'll probably one of the above models in pastel pink or mint green and yes, it'll have eyelashes!
