Popular but tacky

Sorry, not really an AIBU and inspired by the Pandora thread so breaking a few MN 'rules'. I found it really interesting to see what people view as tacky. Agreed with some and was surprised by others.

My personal pet hates are those baby on board signs in the back window of many cars (wouldn't mention it in real life as one of my best friends has one), rings that say things like 'Mum' on them and streaky blonde highlights in dark hair.

Completely appreciate that we all have and are entitled to different tastes. Just fascinated by the strong but opposing responses that an innocuous item can cause. The things I've just listed are viewed as useful/beautiful by many other people.

Well, aren't you superior?

AnotherGirlsParadise · 19/03/2015 08:13

Oh god yeah - the 'Mum/Sister' style jewellery. If one of my DSs bought me anything like that, although I'd be hugely appreciative of the gesture, I really would struggle to wear it.

Yes to Baby On Board signs, particularly the 'Little Princess On Board' ones. Horrible.

Baby showers. Katie Price style pumpkin coaches for weddings. Really extravagant nail art. I'm sure there are more...

ListObsessed · 19/03/2015 08:14

Not intended that way, YouAreMyRain. Just interested in how differently we all view the same world.

You're brave, OP. Grin

But, just for the craic - thick, black, painted-on, square-edged eyebrows.

I feel OK saying they're tacky, because it's not like anyone was born with them, and I'm therefore mocking someone for something they can't help.

theboatisleaking · 19/03/2015 08:24

Orange fake tan, tattoos, body piercings, peroxide with dark roots. Visible brands on clothing. Garden knomes. Indoor signs with corny messages like 'home sweet home' or that state obvious eg 'kitchen'. Necklaces that spell the person's name. Converse trainers on over-30s.
I guess what we perceive as 'tacky' is very individual. DH thinks fake flowers and crystal ornaments are also tacky but I disagree.

londonrach · 19/03/2015 08:24

Celebrities...full stop... (Puts on hard hat)

londonrach · 19/03/2015 08:26

Also superdry. Am i the only one who thought it was a brand of nappies and smile to myself when i see people wearing this brand of nappies sorry clothes.

CaptainAnkles · 19/03/2015 08:26

Agree about ornaments that spell 'home' 'kitchen' 'love' and all that. I've never liked baby on board signs either.

ListObsessed · 19/03/2015 08:34

I'm guilty of the Superdry one and currently undecided on fake flowers. Have always thought they were tacky but have seen some really good ones lately and am slightly tempted. This is what I mean - we will all be considered to have tacky taste by someone somewhere. It doesn't really matter but it is interesting.

I love my little baby on board sign. I was so excited putting it in with the spanking new car seat and teeny weeny baby Smile

I don't like cars with eyelashes, pink fluffy steering wheel covers and stickers saying things like 'powered by fairy dust'.

Different strokes Wink

QueenBean · 19/03/2015 08:39

I hate photo frames which spell out something - "friends" or "love". Always accompanied by a layer of dust too.

And those signs that people hang around saying "I didn't want the kitchen but it came with the house" and other "funny" sayings. Or worse, the lovely dovey "thoughtful" and "inspirational" ones that say "a mothers work is never done, but for her family she'll never complain" or "friends are the family we choose for ourselves"

Yuck yuck yuck

WildFlowersAttractBees · 19/03/2015 08:40

Really large earrings, baseball caps on anyone not playing sport, nail art and fishnet tights.

fattymcfatfat · 19/03/2015 08:41

I have a mum ring. my "DS" bought it for my 18th birthday (his dad did) I wear it except when pregnant as my fingers get really fat.

fake flowers are awful.

and I hate the massive meringue wedding dresses...why? just why?

thats about it really, im pretty common though Grin

SandysMam · 19/03/2015 08:43

Baby on board signs are really to alert the emergency services in case of a bad accident, that they may be looking for a baby too...

WorraLiberty · 19/03/2015 08:45

SandysMam, I can't see any member of the emergency services searching for a baby just on the strength of a sign in the car.

Not least because no-one ever removes them when the baby isn't in the car.

FeijoaSundae · 19/03/2015 08:47

A car seat in the car is probably going to alert emergency services more readily than a BOB sign, which presumably isn't taken out every time the baby isn't actually traveling in the car.

Nabootique · 19/03/2015 08:50

YY to weird eyebrows, orange fake tan, inspirational quotes on anything (it will usually be pastel coloured as well, be it a coaster, fridge magnet, whatever, ugh). Also "scrunchie" type hair bands, lipliner outside of the lip line, over the top false eyelashes... I'll probably think of some more.

MrsBigginsPieShop · 19/03/2015 08:50

If the accident was that bad I think the baby's car seat will stand a better chance of surviving than the Baby on Board sign....might be more of a clue.

Trills · 19/03/2015 08:51

Baby on board signs do not do any such thing.

FeijoaSundae · 19/03/2015 08:52

BOB sign deniers unite!!

Trills · 19/03/2015 08:53

I like fake flowers, hate jewellery with words on.

MrsBigginsPieShop · 19/03/2015 08:53

Ugg style boots with trodden down heels, jeans with holes in the knees, chain necklaces on men, car eyelashes, babies with pierced ears, novelty inflatable Christmas decorations...

MrsBigginsPieShop · 19/03/2015 08:54

Grin at BOB United Front!

londonrach · 19/03/2015 08:54

Hate anything with words on including cups with mum, gran, next door neighbour, random stranger...

Trills · 19/03/2015 08:54

I like large earrings and patterned tights.

Hate baby on board signs, but even more hate "princess on board" or "beloved grandchild on board".

Hate baseball caps, and all sportswear worn when you are not doing sport or on your way to/from doing sport.
