Popular but tacky

Sorry, not really an AIBU and inspired by the Pandora thread so breaking a few MN 'rules'. I found it really interesting to see what people view as tacky. Agreed with some and was surprised by others.

My personal pet hates are those baby on board signs in the back window of many cars (wouldn't mention it in real life as one of my best friends has one), rings that say things like 'Mum' on them and streaky blonde highlights in dark hair.

Completely appreciate that we all have and are entitled to different tastes. Just fascinated by the strong but opposing responses that an innocuous item can cause. The things I've just listed are viewed as useful/beautiful by many other people.

I knew I should have included a disclaimer!

Aside from medical reasons obviously!

'Nail art'…. Especially if they have horrible dangly bits hanging off them.

slithytove · 19/03/2015 11:56

I thought Bob signs were to warn other drivers that you will likely be driving like a twat due to screaming kids?

Either way still hate them.

Also.
Word decorations, character clothing, Groucho Marx eyebrows, tricked out cars, people listening to music in public without headphones, driving around blasting music with windows down, calling kids prince/princess, wrapping babies in horrible frilly stiff sparkly shite, yellow gold, the use of the word 'of' instead of 'have'. Probably lots more.

slithytove · 19/03/2015 11:57

Purple pop up boxes on mumsnet Angry

slithytove · 19/03/2015 11:58

So I kind of went off the popular but tacky theme and just started ranting about things I hate Grin

JemimaPuddlePop · 19/03/2015 12:03

Anyone mentioned headbands on babies yet?
I also really dislike seeing 'proper' shoes on babies - why?
Anything that has a big, obvious brand name on it.

A pierced ear on a boy/man of any age.

Popular tattoos - yes, a tattoo on the inside of your wrist was 'out there' ten years ago - not so much now.

Printed words on walls like the ones that read 'Live Laugh Love'.

richthegreatcornholio · 19/03/2015 12:08

Check me out, and the fruit of my loins.

Totally true! The thing is no one else actually gives a shit that you can breed. It's useful for identifying cars that are likely to appallingly driven and maintained though.

ThereIsNoSuchThingAsRoadTax · 19/03/2015 12:12

I always keep a nice distance back when I see the cars in front say there is either a baby or a child on board.

So you don't mind crashing into cars if they don't have a baby in them?

Meechimoo · 19/03/2015 12:12

I find grammar schools, Waitrose and Boden so tacky Grin

FuckItBucket · 19/03/2015 12:16

Shopping in Waitrose or doing it online.

Wearing Boden

Drinking gin

Drinking wine each night.

Not having tattoos

Not having piercings

Not wearing make up

Plain walls with no pictures

No twigs or pebbles around the house

Not owning a black leather sofa

Bogeyface · 19/03/2015 12:22

I like my Converse, but thats because they are comfy and go with my jeans, didnt give it much more thought than that.

My friend is 64 and he rocks his Converse, some how they look far cooler on him than anyone else!

LittleMilkNoSugar · 19/03/2015 12:32

Converse on over-30s

I've only just discovered Converse and I love blooming them. And I'm 176.

Bugger bugger buggerty bugger. Grin

butterfly2015 · 19/03/2015 12:34

Ugg type boots. Especially worn with pyjamas. In tesco.

Made up kids names. Please, just don't.

Grown ups having several teddy bears on their bed. It's not cute, it's odd.

Fairy stickers on cars.

BasinHaircut · 19/03/2015 12:38

YES Jemima! Headbands on babies are just so awful! Or anything that suggests baby is more a fashion accessory or doll to dress up that an actual human being.

Bogeyface · 19/03/2015 12:39

I've got one!

Anyone who judges anyone else for what they wear, say, eat or own, for where they live, shop and work. :)

weeblueberry · 19/03/2015 12:39

I've stuck my baby on board sign on the bit of window next to the car seat door (if that makes sense) in the hopes that folk will see it and not park too close so I have the room I need to get the toddler in the car.

Doubt it works though. Wink

Riri85 · 19/03/2015 12:45

Well am going to be breaking the 'people over 30 wearing converse' rule by the end of this month when my 30th happens! I live in converse!

Riri85 · 19/03/2015 12:46

Ugh! And my baby wears headbands! Shock

FuckItBucket · 19/03/2015 12:57

I do just things mentioned on this thread and more.

I'm a dirty common northerner but so is everyone else here so alls good Grin

Also the word tacky is tacky

MerryMarigold · 19/03/2015 13:00

BMW's. All of them tbh.

Hadron21 · 19/03/2015 13:05

Women my age (40s) drinking wine in restaurants in the afternoon while wearing 'going out' dresses. Reality tv has so much to answer for.

LadyWellian · 19/03/2015 13:10

I thought Baby on Board signs were to alert other drivers that the person in front of them probably isn't concentrating on driving as much as they might be, rather than on the assumption that most drivers would gleefully ram up the back end of anyone not displaying a sign.

I am 44 and outside of work I live in Converse in the summer and Uggs (not with trodden down heels) in the winter. I also wear Crocs around the house and have even been known to go outside in them.

LadyWellian · 19/03/2015 13:11

Actually I'm 43 Blush

theboatisleaking · 19/03/2015 13:12

I wonder if we're all interpreting meaning of 'tacky' the same way? I took it to mean vulgar, twee, 'blinged-up' or bad taste.

An elderly person in Converse could probably pull it off (in a fun quirky way) but IMO adults in Converse look like they're desperately clinging onto teenage fashion.

Baby headbands with an oversized flower look bizarre, like they're in a flower-fairy costume.
Dogs in handbags (or pink shiny dog-coats).
Leopard-print boob-tubes.
Leggings with no tunic over top.
Short spiky hairstyles shaved short up the back (like a crew-cut at back).
Dip-dyed hair.
Fake leather or PVC coats.
