to fear discontinuation of my favourite foods?

It all started with Ramen from Waitrose. It was delicious, DH & I loved it. Then it was discontinued. Then the chili and kidney bean soup (which admittedly sounds foul but did taste divine) - GONE. Tesco, what happened to chewable Rennie?! Then the Thai fishcakes. Tasty dishes, tragically abandoned by the heartless grocers.

The last straw was 2014's horrific re-formulation of M&S's tzatziki. Anyway, I am now living in dread regarding the M&S Hot and Spicy Chicken Noodle Soup. It is oh so good. Medicine in a food carton but in a delicious, whole-tub-to-myself, chilli-tingle way. They're gonna pull it, aren't they?

Or, on the off chance that anyone has access to army base shops, try them too. My husband brought home a box of Brannigans Beef & Mustard crisps he'd found in a shop on an army base.

gaggiagirl · 17/03/2015 11:34

Ooh does anyone remember the cheese spread triangles that were all different flavours? Shrimp, tomato, chive, ham and plain. They were great.

YANAgurl1973 · 17/03/2015 12:07

Still missing aqua Libra herbal drink :(

moonbells · 17/03/2015 13:02

Gosh all this reminds me of a dessert I ate tons of back in the day... M&S of course - it was a mousse with swirled fruit puree in. Can't remember what they called it.

My DH and I have a theory that Waitrose automatically discontinues anything we really like that we can only get there. Our list is up to nearly 30 items in the last few years.

One thing I do miss is the old formula Smash potato. When it came in big granules and not flakes. Comfort food! Not half as good now it's flakey.

marshmallowpies · 17/03/2015 13:46

Gaggiagirl those sound yummy! You might get similar cheesy/fish paste at Ikea, but in tubes - I've got a friend with a Swedish partner & had amazing cheese & salmon or cheese & anchovy paste in tubes at their place. Really good stuff. Might even have been cheese and crab, I can't remember, just remember that I loved it!

I have recently discovered some stuff is not as good as I remember, my DH bought me one of those dessert pots which is strawberry mousse with cream on top and white chocolate sprinkles and strawberry sauce - I used to wolf those down as a student when I lived on junk food -but guess what? They are disgusting! I told him it was good to have a taste of it again just for nostalgia's sake, but I never need to eat one again!

fingersandwich · 17/03/2015 13:54

I still dream of Applause bars. Sigh.

fingersandwich · 17/03/2015 13:59

Oh, and Terry's Chocolate Lemons. Same as the Chocolate Orange, but lemon. They were amazing (and were around a very long time ago...). Also, Terry's Neapolitans.

gaggiagirl · 17/03/2015 14:27

marshmallow they were fabulous. Came in a circle cardboard affair like dairylea or laughing cow. I've seen the Ikea tube cheese, its yum. Primula do a shrimp/prawn one too.

AlmaMartyr · 17/03/2015 14:40

I too miss the Cote D'or chocolate, has been replaced everywhere by yucky Lindt now. I stock up hugely when I'm overseas and get the chance.

DH once found mozzarella stuffed gnocchi in Sainsburys and it was divine. Have never seen it before or since. We both wonder if we imagined the whole delicious thing.

I really miss fizzy Chewits too. Lovely. Sour ones are good but don't have that bicarby aftertaste that I crave.

PeasinPod1 · 17/03/2015 14:53

Am so happy I found you all! So happy not just me and others get the rage/fear too, so funny how so any of these are veggie dishes and so many are M&S. Mine to mourn are:

M&S- used to do a veggie Indian curry selection including THE most amazing (better than actual Indian restaurant) mushroom curry
usually always sold out in my store, would get it several times a week, but they just stopped it (around 5 years ago)

M&S- pecorino and basil dip- THE best pizza crust dip in the world- bought out for 2 summers then never again (around 5 years ago)

Linda McCartney veggie scampi- just utterly beyond devastated this is gone…in around 3 of my local supermarkets it was almost always sold out, yet they saw it wasn’t popular, it was so amazing….

marshmallowpies · 17/03/2015 17:02

Fingersandwich I loved the honeycomb Terry's Orange and the popping candy one...mmmmm....

Can I be the first to mention Mingles? Very much mourned here.

CliveCussler · 19/03/2015 21:10

I have been looking for Muller Amore Walnut and Honey greek for the last few weeks, but they seem to have disappeared too!

They were lush.

gaggiagirl · 19/03/2015 21:16

Ooh clive yes they were bloody gorgeous weren't they!
I'm going to look out for them now I think my local morrisons has them.
Actually Greek yog with honey is beautiful anyway.

CliveCussler · 19/03/2015 21:24

I don't have a morrisons Sad

Hope you find them.

phlebasconsidered · 19/03/2015 23:07

If I could just once find Findus crispy curry pancakes... Me and my best friend had them as a post pub snack way back. We used to fry up the minced beef ones and then put them into cheese toasties. Carb overload joy.

SamWidges · 20/03/2015 00:07

Cross and Blackwell (now in the Nestle org) used to do a fab low fat French vinaigrette. It is no longer available, hasn't been for yonks but was the BEST dressing I have ever had. I have travelled extensively and have never come across such anything as good. Shame.

Germgirl · 20/03/2015 06:22

Does anyone remember Cadburys Bournville chocolate spread? It came in a white tub with red writing & was last seen about 30 years ago. I loved that, it wasn't as sweet as most chocolate spreads, I really liked it on toast. No one ever seems to remember it. I wish they'd bring it back.

Tenementfunster · 20/03/2015 06:55

I realise I may be in the minority but years ago waitrose did egg curry. Absolutely delicious.

SooBee61 · 21/03/2015 17:30

Campbells do a condensed celery soup if thats useful.

SooBee61 · 21/03/2015 17:56

AlmaMartyr
Ocado stock Cote D'or chocolate in milk, plain and Nougattini!

toothlessoldhag · 21/03/2015 18:13

Green and blacks selection box - not those tedious mini bares, actual box of chocs, like milk tray say, but a million times tastier. On sale for a few months then gone. I found them on their Canadian website and actually contemplated importing them, but they're gone too.

Oh, and a choc-ice that had a wafer layer under the ice cream. 1970s...

toothlessoldhag · 21/03/2015 18:14

Ps I've also stockpiled on vim from Robert Dyas

spoonjarjarspoonjar · 21/03/2015 18:53

Mine is plain and simple sandwiches, basically in every shop in the entire world.

Not even Greggs seem to have simple sandwiches when I go in these days. All I want is plain ham, or plain cheese, or plain tuna. Not ham and salad. Not cheese and artisanal chutney.

My DS is 3 and like a lot of toddlers he likes simple plain food. I find it hard to eat out with him because I don't want to have to spend 10 minutes picking shredded salad out of a fecking sandwich.

gaggiagirl · 21/03/2015 20:04

spoon Asda cafe!!!!! I think its £2 to build a Childs packed lunch type thing in a card box. Plain ham or plain cheese sandwich on Warburtons milk roll bread, yogurt, drink, cheese, fruit, crayons and such.

Melawen · 21/03/2015 20:27

Sainsburys used to do a chicken kiev with a mozzarella and ham middle - was really annoyed when that vanished!!!

My nana used to love lemon biscuits - fairly soft biscuits I think with a lemon cream filling - I liked them too, but can't find them now!
