to fear discontinuation of my favourite foods?

It all started with Ramen from Waitrose. It was delicious, DH & I loved it. Then it was discontinued. Then the chili and kidney bean soup (which admittedly sounds foul but did taste divine) - GONE. Tesco, what happened to chewable Rennie?! Then the Thai fishcakes. Tasty dishes, tragically abandoned by the heartless grocers.

The last straw was 2014's horrific re-formulation of M&S's tzatziki. Anyway, I am now living in dread regarding the M&S Hot and Spicy Chicken Noodle Soup. It is oh so good. Medicine in a food carton but in a delicious, whole-tub-to-myself, chilli-tingle way. They're gonna pull it, aren't they?

Iceland and Hone Bargains is a good bet for crappy processed foods Grin

I miss Bird Eyes Fish Balls. My mum used to make me them on a saturday with chips and fried egg. Greasy, sick inducing heaven .

3rdtimelucky73 · 15/03/2015 15:51

I'm another sad about the loss of the scrummy cheese & celery sandwich from meddling M&S.

Also, frozen meat-free burgers from Sainsburys have recently changed to a foul cardboard/dog food mix. They have been an ocassional but staple of my diet for 20+ years despite no longer being a vegetarian. Bastards. (If anyone has tasted similar I would be v v grateful).

Laska42 · 15/03/2015 15:51

Im pretty sure the M&S cheese and celery sandwich used a mix of grated cheese and cream cheese with chopped celery, but heres one that claims to be pretty like and im just about to go and make one! ..

DontDrinkandFacebook · 15/03/2015 16:11

Have we said Waitrose Lemon Yum Yums yet?

They are truly the food of the gods. I don't live anywhere near a Waitrose now and I have no idea whether there are plans to discontinue them or not, but I miss them so much and in grumpy, pre-menstrual moments I dream of them.

Baddz · 15/03/2015 16:38

Dreamy....it was called superwhip Smile

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 15/03/2015 16:55

I don't think the cheese and celery sandwich was ever grated cheese... I remember it as thin slices of cheese with thinnish slices of celery (about 5mm thick) but yes, I think it must have been cream cheese used in place of butter on one side. I miss them, the existing ones are just not the same.

Ditto Wimpys... if you can ever find them, I remember the gorgeousness that was the quarterpounder with cheese when it was wrapped in yellow paper... with special sauce, just delicious. It changed and now most of the Wimpys have closed down. Rickmansworth is probably my nearest one... and I live in Wales!

FrazzledMum... I remember the chicken sandwiches with a herby mayo - try the Sainsbury ones that are packed in a paper pack - Chicken salad with lemon herb mayonnaise - v.v. close imo.

marshmallowpies · 15/03/2015 16:55

Dreamygirl I remember that chilled cream in a tub - no idea where from, we'd never have had that at home so must have tried it at somebody else's house.

IHavemyownLighthouseyouknow · 15/03/2015 17:30

Waitrose Lemon Yum Yums? Now you mention it, I haven't seen them in my local Waitrose for a while....gutted!

Neffi · 15/03/2015 19:26

Costa coffee have just, in the last couple of weeks, stopped doing my favourite lunchtime sandwich, a ham hock with caramelised onion. Am heartbroken.

Smooshface · 15/03/2015 19:37

When dd1 was born I was totally addicted to Somerfield rocky road, came in tubs and had sandy chocolate shortbread in it, was so delicious, but coop discontinued it and never found anyone as good (not Tesco, not gu, not waitrose, all crap in comparison).

Safeway chicken satay in a tin, stopped when somerfield took them over.

I don't go to co-op now, for fear i will fall in love and get my heart broken again after another take over.

Also: creamola foam

TheBitterBoy · 15/03/2015 19:50

The original cheese and celery sandwich didn't have lettuce in it Laska but i agree with the grated cheddar and cream cheese combo. I don't know exactly what was so lovely about it as it seems so simple, but it was just delicious

Smooshface · 15/03/2015 19:56

Oh and white chocolate maltesers! You can buy the hot chocolate of this but not the actual damn maltesers. I now can't have normal choc as it gives me a migraine, white choc does not

Smooshface · 15/03/2015 19:57

Oh and M&s flavourburst crisps! They were amazing

PilchardPrincess · 15/03/2015 20:02

Not rtft

Waitrose used to do a Indian Snack Selection which was meaty and had sort of kebaby things and chicken and stuff. We used to have it with potato salad and salad as a light supper. It was perfect.

Got killed off about 3 years ago Sad

aliciagardner · 15/03/2015 20:29

Whoever was looking for dales lamb grills - morrisons do an own brand version that I think is just as good. No mint! In the freezer section.

flyingspaghettimonster · 15/03/2015 22:02

Iceland prawn and sweetcorn pizza from the 1980's... I miss those. Mind you it's hard to think of a good I DON'T miss - we've lived in America 8 years now so missing food is serging we just have to accept. I don't ever order seasonal items like the shamrock shake at Macdonalds in case I like it And then it leaves me...

lbsjob87 · 15/03/2015 22:16

ASDA used to do Pineapple and Mexican Lime high juice squash. It was amazing, good on it's own, with lemonade or as a mixer. But it disappeared about 2years ago.

I tweeted them recently to ask about it and they said :"Ooh, that sounds nice. We might bring it back one day, or we might not. Keep checking the shelf." Twats. I can't find anything similar anywhere.

Also, Aldi's American style crunchy peanut butter has gone from being a standard stock line to a Specially Selected one (or whatever they call it). Which basically means they get it in 3/4 times a year and it costs more.

lbsjob87 · 15/03/2015 22:17

Also, does NO-ONE sell frozen cream any more??

FayKnights · 15/03/2015 22:20

Came on to say Gino Ginelli tutti fruitti ice cream, see I'm not alone in that one. Also M&S leek and potato soup, it was gorgeous but then disappeared.
I'd totally forgotten about 'booty bags', we used to covet those in the 80s!!

FelixFelix · 15/03/2015 22:53

Someone mentioned up thread about coffee flavour walnut whips from M&S. Me and my DM miss these so much.

FelixFelix · 15/03/2015 22:59

Also a while ago I got a calabrese pizza from the frozen section in Aldi and it was the most delicious supermarket pizza I've ever had. Never to be seen again!

lbsjob87 · 15/03/2015 23:24

Felix I bought some coffee (well, "Cappuccino") walnut whips in M&S yesterday!
They are amazing, I buy them at least once a month.
I think they are £1.79 for 3 or 6 for £2.50.
They don't have a walnut on top, it's a chocolate shaped like a coffee bean, but the flavour is quite an intense coffee flavour.
I don't drink coffee but could eat those all day!

With you on Aldi's pizzas, they are so good!

marshmallowpies · 15/03/2015 23:34

Yep you can still get the cappuccino whips but not in the variety pack shy more with the walnut and pecan whips. They do have mint whips now which are heavenly....

SpringBreaker · 15/03/2015 23:42

Lidl occasionally have tinned dauphinois potatoes and they are the best I have ever tasted, can hardly ever find them though.

sconequeen · 15/03/2015 23:49

Oh yes, M&S cheese and celery sandwiches from about 15 years ago. Still miss them every time I visit their sandwich section. Have tried making them myself but it's just not the same. Can MN make M&S relent and let us have them back please, please, please? (PS: need them gluten-free now!)
