Ok so earlier, my friend sent me a photo of this dress asking what colour it was, I replied 'white and gold, why?', she said it's blue and black.. I replied no of course it's not.. I shared it to facebook, and some people think it's blue and black and some people think it's white and gold.. and it has just changed! I refreshed the page to see the most recent comments and it changed colour!! Now I can only see blue and black.. AM I GOING MAD?!

It's white and gold....

In negative.

Pootles2010 · 27/02/2015 12:20

Oh my Lord - i thought you were all mental saying white and gold. Just nipped downstairs for my lunch, come upstairs, very very white and gold, then changed back! In front of my eyes! Witchcraft!

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/02/2015 14:13

New theory. I have great night vision and I'm a blue/black person. Are the blue/black seers all good in the dark

Honeydragon · 27/02/2015 14:16

Blue and black. The gold seeing people are scaring me Grin

worldgonecrazy · 27/02/2015 14:22

If you copy and paste chunks of the total picture, instead of looking at the whole thing, then you see how your eyes play tricks on you.

Writerwannabe83 · 27/02/2015 14:41

I posted a few hours ago to say the dress was white and gold - which it absolutely definitely was - but I've just looked again and now it's 100% blue and gold!!

I don't get it, lol. I've read all the scientific explanations and I'm still freaked out Grin

RufusTheReindeer · 27/02/2015 14:43

honey

It's ok...I've come over to the dark side now

In about an hour there will be 5 children in this house....I see dead people!!! Oooohh no hold on.....I see weird coloured dresses!!!!

Will be testing all of them...even the ones that aren't mine

Coumarin · 27/02/2015 14:45

Looking at it in a dimly lit room with screen brightness (iphone) on low. It is pale blue, but definitely blue, and browny black.

I can't get my head round how that blue can look white to anyone. Confused DH says blue and browny black too.

You white and golders are on a huge windup.

Love how the company who sell it are all over twitter being proud and trying to cash in. It's bloody ugly.

Pootles2010 · 27/02/2015 14:52

Wierdly it looks more white & gold on the Guardian's website... its on the front page, towards the bottom.

RufusTheReindeer · 27/02/2015 15:23

Oh fuck....it's just changed again!!!!

I just had a quick look on the dailymail website (sorry) and it was white and gold

Came on here to say so (because I have no life) and the one at the top of this page has changed!!!!!

I am sat on exactly the same place on the sofa (all afternoon as I am being very lazy)

It's freaking me out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RufusTheReindeer · 27/02/2015 15:24

It's changed again

I can't stop looking

Eminybob · 27/02/2015 15:57

I've finally seen it as black and blue. On the laptop if I changed the angle of the screen it changed colour. Still white and gold on my phone, and I saw it on telly and it was white and gold, but at a certain angle on laptop only it is black and blue.

I'm so confused. I would understand if everyone saw it differently depending on the screen they were looking at it on, but if 2 people can look at it on the same screen (at the same angle) and still see different colours then I'm flummoxed.

Eminybob · 27/02/2015 15:59

Oh and I don't have £1 million btw.

That's how sure I was that it was white and gold though.

Pipbin · 27/02/2015 16:28

Eminy I looked at it in bright sunlight and it was white and gold. I then came inside and looked at the exact same picture and watched it change to brown and blue.
My understanding it is due to the light that your eye is expecting to see, rather like when your eyes adapt to the change of light in the dark.

Thumbwitch · 27/02/2015 16:35

www.wired.com/2015/02/science-one-agrees-color-dress/

This has the picture actively changing between blue/black and white/gold - I'd be really interested to see if any of you can't see it change!

Pipbin, Rufus - I have the same problem as you. I scroll up slowly from the bottom, definitely blue black - hit the midpoint of the picture and watch it pale into pale blue-grey and gold - argh!!

Pipbin · 27/02/2015 17:06

That all look blue black in that picture.

RufusTheReindeer · 27/02/2015 17:10

All 5 children see it as blue black...they are saying it's an age thing...they are not getting any tea Hmm

So the big picture in the middle of that article, the one with the colours next to it.....is that changing colours?

If it keeps changing does that mean you have superhero vision or something?

I'm going to go with that I think....makes me feel a bit better

shovetheholly · 27/02/2015 17:10

I think it's about how your brain processes the ambient light falling on the dress!

I am kind of intrigued by how many people are bemused by the notion that colour is perceptual, given that it's been a philosophical/scientific idea for about 3 centuries now!! Grin

Thumbwitch · 27/02/2015 17:30

Rufus and Pipbin - no, it's the picture at the bottom of the article that's changing colour - I've copied it as a separate link and am going to see if MN can cope with a gif here:

To ask how the eff this works?!?!?!
Thumbwitch · 27/02/2015 17:31

It's working for me, but then I've got it cached etc. - can you see it?

Flomple · 27/02/2015 17:39

Yes, thanks Thumbwitch it works for me.

But the blue version just looks like someone's put a blue filter on the original - clearly white and gold - dress.

Then I asked my 8 year old and she said blue and black...

SayraT · 27/02/2015 18:28

I showed people at work this today, same screen, same room, same angle and 11/13 people saw blue & black, 2/13 people saw white & gold.

Three of the blue & black people saw it change colour everyone else only saw the one colour even when we looked at other pictures and on different screens. I have tried looking from different angles, in the dark, in the light, sneaking up on it but I still see it as white & gold.

RufusTheReindeer · 27/02/2015 18:32

The middle one is changing colour for me as well...well not specially for me, you know what I mean Grin

debbriana · 27/02/2015 18:32

That dress greyish blue and goldish brown
